The idea is older; what changed was that powerful language models could be connected to tools and interfaces, letting software interpret a request, take several steps, and act. That made agents easier to demonstrate, build, and market. But their visibility has grown faster than dependable deployment at scale.
What counts as an AI agent?
There is no single boundary around the term. In the broad framing of the research survey The Rise and Potential of Large Language Model Based Agents, an agent senses its environment, makes decisions, and takes actions. LangChain uses a narrower software definition: an agent is a system that uses a large language model to decide an application’s control flow. These definitions point to the same important distinction: an agent does more than generate an answer; it can choose what to do next.

In this article, “AI agent” means a language-model-based system that can select steps and use tools or interfaces to pursue a task. The level of autonomy varies. One system might retrieve information and ask the user before acting; another might carry out a longer sequence with less supervision. A chatbot feature does not become meaningfully agentic just because it is marketed with the word.
Why did agents become prominent so quickly?
The recent shift is best understood as a change in visibility and practicality, not the invention of agents. Language models made natural-language instructions a usable interface: people could describe an outcome rather than specify every step. Tool use and computer interaction then made it possible for a model to attempt a sequence—interpret a request, choose an action, inspect the result, and continue or hand control back.

That loop is easy to demonstrate. A system that can search, navigate a browser, or interact with a user interface makes a more vivid demo than one that only returns text. The same capability also created a platform opportunity: developers could build workflows around models, tools, and orchestration rather than treat each interaction as a standalone answer.
The label helped the trend travel, too. “AI agent” became an umbrella for products with very different degrees of tool use and autonomy. That gave product launches, developer frameworks, and enterprise experiments a shared vocabulary, but it also made the category sound more uniform and mature than it is.

- 2024: LangChain’s report described agents moving beyond niche interest. Its findings reflect the report’s own respondents and definition, rather than all organizations.
- January 2025: OpenAI introduced Operator as a U.S. Pro-user research preview. It could use a browser to click, type, and scroll while attempting tasks. OpenAI described it as an early preview with limitations. On July 17, 2025, the announcement was updated to say Operator had been integrated into ChatGPT as ChatGPT agent. OpenAI’s Operator announcement
- March 2025: OpenAI announced developer building blocks including the Responses API, web and file search, computer use, an Agents SDK, and tools for observing workflows. The company noted that production-ready development could still require custom orchestration and substantial prompt iteration. OpenAI’s developer-tools announcement
McKinsey’s 2025 technology trends report adds measures of attention and investment: it recorded $1.1 billion in agentic-AI equity investment in 2024 and a 985% increase in related job postings from 2023 to 2024. It also found that news and search interest was relatively low in 2024 but grew faster than any other technology trend it measured. Those are signs of rising interest and expectations, not counts of successful deployments. McKinsey’s 2025 technology trends report

How much adoption is real?
Survey results show substantial experimentation, but they should not be collapsed into one universal adoption rate. Different surveys ask different people about different kinds of systems, at different dates.
| Survey and population | Finding | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| McKinsey, 2025 global survey | 23% said their organization was scaling an agentic AI system somewhere in the enterprise; another 39% had begun experimenting. At the level of an individual business function, no more than 10% reported scaling agents. | Respondents’ reports of experimentation and scaling. McKinsey said most organizations were still experimenting or piloting AI overall. Source |
| Gartner, 360 IT application leaders at organizations with at least 250 employees in North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific; surveyed May–June 2025 | 75% said they were piloting, deploying, or had deployed some form of agents. A separate 15% figure covered respondents considering, piloting, or deploying fully autonomous agents. | These are different categories: “some form of agents” is not equivalent to “fully autonomous agents.” Only 19% reported high or complete trust in vendors’ ability to provide adequate hallucination protection. Source |
| Gartner, 2026 CIO and Technology Executive Survey | 17% of organizations had deployed agents, while more than 60% expected to do so within two years. | A separate survey estimate, not a direct time-series comparison with either the 2025 Gartner or McKinsey survey. Gartner characterized agentic AI as being at the “Peak of Inflated Expectations.” Source |
| LangChain’s 2024 report | 51% of respondents said they were using agents in production; 78% had active plans to implement them. | LangChain’s respondent group and agent definition differ from broader enterprise surveys, so these figures are not a definitive global adoption rate. Source |
The practical takeaway is not that agents are either absent or universally deployed. They are attracting real trials and some scaled use, while broad, reliable integration remains a work in progress. McKinsey’s 2025 survey described the transition from pilots to scaled impact as unfinished at most organizations. McKinsey’s survey findings

What still makes autonomous agents difficult?
Giving a system permission to act raises the cost of mistakes. A model can misread context, choose a poor next step, or produce an incorrect result; connecting it to tools can turn those errors into actions. Gartner identified governance, technology maturity, agent sprawl, vendor trust, and organizational readiness as barriers. Its finding that only 19% of surveyed IT application leaders had high or complete trust in vendors’ hallucination protection underscores why a compelling demonstration is not proof of dependable autonomy. Gartner’s 2025 survey release
For organizations, a pilot can establish that a workflow is technically possible without proving it is safe, repeatable, or valuable at scale. More autonomous systems also need clear limits on what they may access and change, ways to monitor their actions, and a route for human review. The need for custom orchestration and repeated prompt iteration noted in OpenAI’s developer announcement is another reminder that the platform building blocks do not automatically make a production workflow reliable.
So, are AI agents a buzzword?
“Agent” is both a real technical direction and an overused label. The underlying idea—software that perceives context, decides, and acts—is not new. Recent language models made it easier to connect flexible instructions to tool-using workflows, and product launches made those workflows visible to a much wider audience. The hype is real, but so is the development activity; the gap is between the promise of autonomous action and the slower work of making it trustworthy and useful at scale.
