A worthwhile remake has to do more than reproduce an older game with newer graphics. Marcin Blacha, CD Projekt Red’s vice president of narration and story director, says the challenge is to identify what worked in the original and retell it for people who could not experience it before. TechRadar reports that Fool’s Theory is developing the upcoming The Witcher remake in Unreal Engine 5, though the report does not confirm a release date or platforms.
Blacha’s test for a good remake
“The secret is to identify what was good in the original game, and find a way to retell it to the audience that, for some reason, cannot participate in this experience,” Blacha told TechRadar. He also described the goal as recreating what worked with newer technology while “staying true to the spirit of the original game.”

That framing makes fidelity a creative question, not simply a checklist of matching characters, locations, or assets. A remake must preserve the qualities that made the earlier game effective, while finding a form that can connect with a different audience. Blacha is particularly well placed to discuss that challenge: TechRadar identifies him as a lead writer on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, as well as CD Projekt Red’s VP of narration and story director.

Why The Witcher’s Act Four is a useful example
Blacha pointed to the first The Witcher game’s rural, lakeside Act Four. He described it as folkloric and scenic, but said the feeling it creates is difficult to reproduce because it is vague and can differ from player to player.

- robustness
That example suggests one of the remake’s harder tasks: translating an atmosphere and its effect on players, rather than assuming that rebuilding the visible elements will automatically recreate the experience. It is Blacha’s illustration of the challenge, not a published design blueprint for the remake.
What is known about the remake—and what is not
TechRadar’s October 1, 2026 report says Fool’s Theory is developing the remake using Unreal Engine 5. The report is the source for these project details; the material cited here does not independently confirm them through an official remake announcement.

- Release date and platforms: not stated in that report.
- Story, gameplay changes, and other features: the report does not establish these details.
Accordingly, the engine and developer do not by themselves tell us how the remake will handle Act Four or any other specific part of the original. Blacha’s comments describe the creative aim, not confirmed changes to the game.
Do not confuse the remake with The Witcher 3 Remastered
The upcoming remake discussed by TechRadar is distinct from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered. CD Projekt Red announced that the latter became available on September 29, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. The publisher says eligible existing owners can upgrade for free within the same platform ecosystem. Those details concern an update to The Witcher 3, not the separate remake of the earlier The Witcher.
