The exact answer depends on the specific car. The Shelby name covers different builders and configurations, so badges alone cannot tell you what was changed or who built it.
How a Shelby differs from a standard Mustang
A standard Mustang’s equipment depends on its trim and model year. A Shelby variant may differ in several substantive ways, not just appearance:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Powertrain: engine, calibration, and output can be specific to the model.
- Chassis and braking: suspension tuning, adaptive damping, brakes, and tires may be upgraded or configured for track use.
- Aerodynamics and weight: track variants can add model-specific aero and reduce weight.
- Appearance and cabin: wheels, graphics, body details, badging, and interior trim can identify a package, but do not prove authenticity.
- Builder and support: the car may be a Ford-produced Shelby-badged model or a Shelby American-modified Mustang, with different documentation and support routes.
That is why “just a body kit” is an incomplete description, but it is also not safe to assume every Shelby has the same mechanical changes. Those depend on the year, variant, and build.
Where the Shelby Mustang began
Ford dates the Shelby GT350’s introduction to 1965 and describes it as a road-racing version of the Mustang developed with Shelby. In Ford’s account, the car began on the Dearborn assembly line and was then tuned and fitted with uprated parts at Shelby American’s Venice, California, shop. Ford’s timeline gives the original 289-cubic-inch V8 a rating of 306 horsepower. Ford’s Mustang timeline and its 2025 Mustang history article provide the company’s chronology and development account.

The GT500 followed in 1967. Ford’s timeline identifies its 428-cubic-inch V8 as rated at 355 horsepower. These early figures describe specific historical models; they are not a general rating for later GT350s or GT500s.
What modern GT350 and GT350R hardware can involve
2019 GT350: engine and chassis
For the 2019 model, Ford lists a hand-assembled 5.2-liter V8 with a flat-plane crank, rated at 526 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque on 93-octane fuel. Ford gives that engine an 8,250-rpm redline. The 2019 car also pairs the engine with a six-speed manual transmission and MagneRide damping. These are Ford’s specifications for the 2019 Shelby GT350, not specifications shared by every Shelby Mustang. See Ford’s 2019 GT350 model page.
GT350R: changes aimed at the track
Ford describes the GT350R as adding aerodynamic and suspension tuning and reducing weight compared with the GT350. Ford also identifies Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires developed for that model. Those details show why the difference can extend beyond engine output: tires, suspension, aerodynamics, and weight all affect how a car behaves. The equipment varies by model year; Ford’s GT350R announcement describes the launch-era car and its engineering.

The Shelby name today covers different programs
“Shelby Mustang” does not identify one single current build process. Ford has offered Shelby-badged Mustang variants, while Shelby American also modifies Mustang-based vehicles under its own programs. Its official Vehicles page lists 2026 Mustang-based offerings including the Super Snake, Super Snake-R, GT350, and GT350/TA. Shelby American characterizes the first GT350 as the first Mustang-based car it created with Ford, and describes the Super Snake as based on Ford’s S650-generation Mustang; those are the company’s descriptions of its vehicles.
Specifications and availability are model- and market-specific. For example, Shelby American’s 2026 Super Snake announcement describes an 830-plus-horsepower supercharged option and a 480-horsepower non-supercharged option. Its 2026 GT350 announcement describes a manufacturer-stated plan for fewer than 1,000 street cars, and says supercharging is available for post-title sales only. These figures refer to those announced configurations, not every Mustang carrying a Shelby name. Consult the current vehicle listings and the relevant Shelby American announcements for the configuration in question.

A badge, stripe, or body part can be added after a car leaves the factory. To assess a specific vehicle, establish what it is, who modified or assembled it, and what documentation follows it.

- Record the model year and VIN. Use the vehicle’s identity and year as the starting point; a shared name such as GT350 does not by itself establish the build.
- Ask for build documentation. Compare the seller’s paperwork and equipment claims with records for that exact vehicle, including any later modifications.
- Check Shelby American’s identifiers when relevant. Shelby American’s support process uses the VIN and CSM information. Its warranty and support page says GT350 and GT500 vehicles it did not modify in Las Vegas will not have a CSM number; it directs support for those vehicles to Ford dealers.
- Confirm the support channel before relying on a warranty claim. Shelby American distinguishes its own modified vehicles from Ford-supported GT350/GT500 vehicles. Warranty coverage and service routing depend on the specific car and applicable terms.
For a 2019 GT350R, Ford identifies Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires as developed for that model, but tire fitment still needs to be checked against the car’s year, trim, and wheel size. A tire name alone is not enough to establish fitment.

Published output numbers are useful only when attached to the car they describe. The original GT350’s 306-horsepower rating, the 1967 GT500’s 355-horsepower rating, and the 2019 GT350’s 526-horsepower rating refer to different engines and model years. Shelby American’s figures for 2026 vehicles describe its own configurations, with fuel and sales qualifications. They are not directly comparable without accounting for builder, model year, engine, and equipment. The cited figures are manufacturer specifications or announcements, not independent comparative test results.
