Switching production traffic to green does not necessarily stop blue. Traffic routing and shutting down the old environment are separate steps: blue may remain running during a validation window, stay available for rollback, or continue handling a type of work that the traffic shift did not affect. The title alone does not reveal which explanation applies, so first identify what “doing the work” means: serving requests, running background jobs, holding sessions, answering health checks, or simply consuming compute.
What a traffic switch changes—and what it does not
In a blue-green deployment, a replacement environment is prepared alongside the current one. Once the replacement is ready and tested, production traffic is directed to it. The previous environment can provide a rollback path if the new version has problems. AWS describes the core idea as shifting traffic between two identical environments running different application versions: Introduction – Blue/Green Deployments on AWS.

The routing change determines where requests are sent; it does not, by itself, terminate processes in the old environment. For example, AWS ECS documents a bake period after the production traffic shift during which both blue and green service revisions are running. Whether and when blue is terminated depends on the deployment configuration and outcome. See the Amazon ECS blue/green service deployments workflow.
Pin down what “doing the work” means
Before treating blue’s activity as a failed cutover, establish what you observed and compare it with the intended routing and lifecycle settings. These checks are diagnostic guidance, not findings about a particular deployment.
#1 Best Overall
- User requests: Compare observed request counts with the intended traffic weights and the load balancer’s listener or routing rules. A shift may be gradual rather than all at once.
- Persistent sessions: Determine whether clients can keep existing connections or sessions on blue after routing changes. The headline does not establish that this is happening.
- Background processing: Check whether workers, scheduled jobs, or queue consumers are configured independently of web-request routing. A request traffic shift does not prove that those processes were stopped.
- Health checks: Separate health-check activity from ordinary production requests in metrics and logs.
- Compute use: Check the old service’s desired and running counts, along with deployment cleanup settings. A running environment can use resources even when it is no longer receiving ordinary production traffic.
For the specific deployment, compare those observations with the routing configuration, service and job configuration, relevant metrics and logs, and any scheduled cleanup process. Do not infer the cause from the fact that blue still exists or appears active.
Why some clients may still reach blue
“Traffic switched” can describe different rollout strategies, including all-at-once, canary, or linear shifts. Those strategies expose the new environment to traffic in different ways. A DNS-based implementation has an additional wrinkle: clients and intermediaries may use cached DNS answers, so the effective change can lag behind the update. AWS discusses these strategies and DNS-based routing in Blue/Green deployment approaches and Blue/Green deployment using Route 53.

- ✅ Traditional fabric wrapped hardcover. Textured olive green cloth provides the classic look and feel of a military field notebook
- ✅ 192 lined pages, 80 gsm ruled paper provides plenty of writing space for organized notes, records, plans, and daily entries
- ✅ Compact field size. Measures 5.25 x 8 inches and fits most uniform cargo pockets, backpacks, equipment bags, and desk setups
- ✅ Made for everyday notes. Useful for training, field notes, operations, inventories, planning, recordkeeping, and general organization
- ✅ Practical hardcover construction. The rigid cover supports writing away from a desk while helping protect the lined pages inside
That means a routing update is not enough to conclude that every client immediately stopped reaching blue. Check the actual routing method, current traffic weights or DNS configuration, and request logs before deciding whether blue is still serving users.

- Define the signal: Identify whether the concern is requests, jobs, sessions, health checks, or resource consumption, and specify the metric or log that shows it.
- Verify the cutover: Inspect the configured traffic-shifting strategy and the live listener, routing weights, or DNS records. Compare the intended destination with observed requests.
- Check the old environment’s lifecycle: Review its running and desired service counts, worker or scheduler configuration, bake period, rollback retention, and cleanup behavior.
- Choose based on validation and rollback needs: If blue is retained as a rollback option, confirm that this is intentional and understand what work it is still allowed to perform. If validation is complete and rollback is no longer needed, use the platform’s configured completion or cleanup process rather than assuming the traffic shift will stop blue.
AWS’s ECS workflow is a platform-specific example, not a universal set of controls. The deployment platform and routing setup for this scenario are not identified, so use the relevant service’s own documentation for exact settings.
