A retro-inspired RPG is a modern game that deliberately borrows selected ideas from older role-playing games; a classic RPG is a game made in the historical period whose conventions it evokes. The key difference is not whether a game has pixel art. It is which parts of an older design it preserves—and which it rebuilds for contemporary play.
Retro-inspired describes influence; classic describes when a game was made
A new game can aim to feel like an RPG from the 1980s or 1990s without reproducing the limitations, controls, or pacing of one. Paradox presents Knights of Pen and Paper as an homage to classic RPGs, illustrating that the label can describe a deliberate influence rather than a game’s age (Paradox Interactive).

By contrast, a classic RPG was made in the era whose technology and conventions shaped it. That distinction is useful, but it is not a strict genre boundary: a modern game may keep old-school turn-based combat and tile-based exploration while updating its interface, or adopt pixel art while playing quite differently from a period game.

| Design axis | Older convention it may evoke | What a modern game might change |
|---|---|---|
| Visuals and presentation | Pixel art or a deliberately period-inspired look | Widescreen framing, modern lighting, 2.5D animation, or 3D environments |
| Combat and input | Turn-based menus and deliberate turns | Real-time reactions, timing inputs, action elements, or faster pacing |
| Exploration | Tile-based movement, overworlds, or first-person dungeons | New puzzle designs, broader interaction, or different navigation tools |
| Convenience and access | Fewer built-in guides or shortcuts, depending on the original game | Fast travel, quality-of-life options, customization, or clearer onboarding |
| Historical fidelity | Recreating specific mechanics and constraints of a period | Recreating the atmosphere or remembered feel without reproducing every friction point |
These are comparison points, not a universal checklist or score. A game’s pixel art alone does not tell you how its battles work, how it handles exploration, or how closely it follows historical constraints.
Retro visuals do not guarantee classic gameplay
CrossCode shows how far a game can modernize while keeping a recognizable old-school visual language. Lead developer Felix Klein said pixel art was essentially the main element the team tried to keep true to older games; he also described widescreen resolution, lighting effects, free-direction aiming, dual-stick controls, and more advanced physics. That is Klein’s account of CrossCode, not a rule about every retro-inspired RPG (Game Developer).

Presentation can also evoke a period without simply copying it. Octopath Traveler pairs visuals reminiscent of 1990s games with 2.5D depth and movement. Its developers also discuss turn-based battles and path actions that give characters additional ways to interact with people outside combat (GameSpot).

Combat can be traditional, hybrid, or action-oriented
Turn-based battles are a familiar RPG convention, but retro influence does not require a game to reproduce one particular combat system. Some modern RPGs retain turns; others add real-time input or use action-oriented mechanics.

Turn-based combat with real-time reactions
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 draws on classic JRPGs while adding reactive, real-time elements to turn-based battles. Sandfall Interactive founder and creative director Guillaume Broche said action games including Souls, Devil May Cry, and NieR inspired the team to bring rewarding action-gameplay ideas into a turn-based setting. This is one deliberate blend, not a requirement for retro-inspired RPGs (PlayStation.Blog).
Old-school exploration with encounters designed for the game
For Operencia: The Stolen Sun, Zen Studios described a revival of old-school turn-based RPGs using modern graphics and streamlined gameplay. Lead designer Ferenc Nagy-Szakáll said the influence was the atmosphere of old-school exploration and puzzle solving. The team settled on a classic tile-based, first-person dungeon-crawler structure before finalizing combat; it chose turn-based encounters to let designers tailor each encounter’s complexity. Art director Tamás Szabó described an aim to use modern technology while retaining a fairytale aesthetic (Unreal Engine).

Modern convenience can preserve the appeal while reducing friction
Some developers want to retain the exploration, turn-based play, or pixel art they value in older RPGs without requiring players to accept every source-era inconvenience. Anders Lauridsen, developer of SKALD: Against the Black Priory, described the goal as making “a game that plays like our nostalgia-tinged memories of the CRPGs of yore but not how retro CRPGs ACTUALLY played” (Game Developer).

Remakes can make similar choices, though they are not the same category as new retro-inspired games. In the interview about Star Ocean The Second Story R, producer Kei Komaki described preserving what fans loved while making the RPG approachable to newcomers. Development producer and director Yuichiro Kitao discussed fast travel, other quality-of-life features, faster combat pacing, and the Break and Assault Action systems (PlayStation.Blog). For Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, producer Masaaki Hayasaka described pixelated characters against 3D backgrounds and said character customization was intended to make the game feel more modern (PlayStation.Blog Japan).
How to tell what a particular game means by “retro-inspired”
- Separate appearance from play. Look beyond pixel art: check whether combat is turn-based, action-based, or hybrid, and how the game handles movement and interaction.
- Identify the borrowed structure. See whether the game uses conventions such as tile-based navigation, party-based progression, overworld exploration, or first-person dungeons.
- Notice what has been updated. Fast travel, modern controls, added customization, and faster pacing can coexist with old-school atmosphere.
- Ask whether it recreates a period or a feeling. A faithful historical recreation and a modern game inspired by remembered classics can look similar while making different design choices.
There is no single authenticity test. The most useful question is which elements the game keeps and which it changes.
