Its value depends on the exact card and printing, its condition, collector demand, and recent sales of comparable copies. To estimate a card’s current value, identify it precisely, assess its condition, and compare completed sales for the same card in similar condition or grade.
What does a Pokémon card’s rarity symbol mean?
Rarity symbols classify cards within a set; they do not establish a print run or resale price. In its March 30, 2023 explanation of the Scarlet & Violet-era system, Pokémon describes these symbols and categories:

- Common: a circle.
- Uncommon: a diamond.
- Rare: a star.
- Double rare: two black stars.
- Ultra rare: two shiny foil stars.
- Illustration rare: one shiny gold star.
- Special illustration rare: an alternate-art Pokémon ex or Supporter card.
- Hyper rare: three shiny gold stars.
These labels and symbols are specific to the Scarlet & Violet explanation. Older sets can use different symbols and labels, and Pokémon TCG Pocket uses a separate rarity display. Check the card’s era and expansion before interpreting its mark. Even within a set, a higher rarity category does not guarantee a higher sale price; demand and condition matter too. How do you identify the exact card?
Small differences in set, number, language, or variant can affect which sales are relevant. Before estimating a price, record the card’s name, expansion, collector number, language, and any distinguishing variant details. The set icon identifies the expansion, and the rarity symbol is in the card’s lower-right corner. Pokémon’s official card database can help confirm an English-language card and search by expansion or rarity; identification there is not a price estimate. Search the official Pokémon card database

Which factors affect a card’s value?
Condition
Centering, corners, edges, creases, and surface flaws all affect how collectors assess a card. Inspect both sides under good light. A card that looks clean to you is not necessarily professionally graded at the highest level. PSA describes condition as a core component of trading-card value and names centering issues, dinged corners, and creases as examples of flaws. PSA’s guide to trading-card value
Collector demand
Some cards attract more interest than others because of the Pokémon, artwork, or other features collectors seek. Demand can change, so rarity alone cannot show what buyers are paying now. Pokémon Support says The Pokémon Company International does not track secondary-market prices. It explains that “The secondary market value of an item is determined by the wants and needs of the Pokémon community, not by our company.” Pokémon Support: “What are my cards worth?”

Exact printing and sale context
Compare like with like: the same card and printing, in the same language where possible, and with a similar raw condition or the same grading company and numeric grade. A graded card and an ungraded copy are not equivalent comparisons. Sale date matters because market interest can move, and one unusually high result is not necessarily typical.

- Confirm its identity. Record the name, set, collector number, language, and variant. Use the official card database to help verify the expansion and rarity.
- Inspect its condition. Check centering, corners, edges, creases, and surface on both sides. Keep raw-card comparisons separate from graded-card sales.
- Find completed sales. Look for recent sales of the exact card and printing in similar condition, or the same grading company and grade. Compare several results when available and note their dates. PSA advises examining final sale prices and, for auctions, bid counts.
- Separate sale prices from asking prices. A live listing shows what a seller hopes to receive, not what a buyer has paid. Treat completed sales as stronger evidence and be cautious about drawing a typical value from one exceptional auction.
- Account for grading only if relevant. If considering professional grading, compare realistic possible grades and current grading and shipping costs with sales of similarly graded copies. PSA’s service authenticates cards, assigns a condition grade on a 1–10 scale, and encapsulates them in a tamper-evident case. Does tournament legality affect collector value?
Legality can influence a player’s interest in a card, but it is separate from collector value. For the 2026 Standard season, Pokémon’s rotation announcement says cards marked G rotate out, while H, I, and J marks are legal for that season. It also notes that an older printing can remain usable if a current reprint is legal. Is a valuable-looking card necessarily authentic?
No. Counterfeit cards exist. Pokémon recommends comparing a suspicious card with official product images or asking a local shop that specializes in trading cards to evaluate it. A price that seems unusually low can also be a warning sign. Pokémon Support’s counterfeit-card guidance
