What’s actually slowing this PC down?

A PC game can be difficult on a handheld for four different reasons: the hardware cannot sustain the required performance within portable power and cooling limits; the game expects mouse-and-keyboard input; its interface is hard to read or navigate on a small screen; or a launcher, middleware component, anti-cheat system or operating-system assumption does not work on that handheld. A title can launch successfully and still provide an awkward, compromised experience.
Compatibility is therefore a graded question, not simply “works” or “doesn’t work.” Valve’s Steam Deck program checks performance, controls, display legibility and software behavior separately, while Xbox uses its own handheld categories. The exact device, operating system, game version and current rating all matter.

“Difficult to run” describes several different problems
Start by identifying what is actually failing. The remedy for a game that will not launch is entirely different from the remedy for one that launches but has tiny subtitles.
It does not launch or function
A game can be blocked by an operating-system dependency, a compatibility layer, a launcher or middleware such as anti-cheat. Valve’s Steam Deck classification calls a title Unsupported when it is currently nonfunctional on the device. Proton or specific hardware incompatibility can be the reason, even when the game’s graphics requirements appear modest.

- Load apps faster with A1-rated performance. (A1 performance is 1500 read IOPS, 500 write IOPS. Based on internal testing. Results may vary based on host device, app type, and other factors.)
It runs, but needs setup
A title may work after you select a community control layout, open the on-screen keyboard manually, use the touchscreen for a launcher or adjust an option that is awkward to reach with buttons. Valve uses situations like these as examples of its Playable category. The game is usable, but not a seamless console-style experience.
It runs with performance compromises
The game may require reduced visual settings, a lower resolution or acceptance of a lower frame rate on a particular handheld. A compatibility approval is not a promise that every scene maintains the same frame rate. Demanding cities, large battles, shader compilation and crowded online areas can behave differently from an opening tutorial.
It runs but is uncomfortable to use
Tiny text, dense menus, incorrect button prompts, pointer-heavy interfaces and keyboard-dependent actions can make a technically functional game frustrating. This is a usability problem rather than a raw rendering problem, but it is just as important when the screen and controls are built into a small device.
Performance must fit a portable power and cooling budget
A handheld combines a CPU, GPU, memory, cooling system, battery and display in a compact enclosure. It cannot be assumed to reproduce a desktop computer’s performance at the same settings and resolution. Power limits keep heat and battery drain manageable, while a small cooling system may reduce sustained speed when a game keeps the processor or graphics chip busy.
For Steam Deck, Valve’s Steamworks compatibility checklist uses a default performance criterion of 30 frames per second at 800p. That is a device-specific requirement for Valve’s compatibility review, not an independently measured result for every game, a guarantee for every scene, a universal definition of smoothness or a rule for other handhelds. A comparison is meaningful only when it states the handheld model, game build, resolution, graphics settings and test section.

- Store more of your favorite games and other content with capacities up to 2TB
- Built to endure with temperature resistance, waterproofing, x-ray protection, and more
Expect several performance variables to interact:
- Resolution and upscaling: Rendering fewer pixels can improve frame rate, but text and fine interface elements may become less clear.
- Graphics settings: Shadows, reflections, volumetric effects, foliage and draw distance can be expensive even when the rest of the game looks simple.
- CPU workloads: Simulation-heavy strategy games, open worlds with many non-player characters and large multiplayer matches may be CPU-limited rather than GPU-limited.
- Sustained operation: A short benchmark or opening scene may not represent a long session after heat has built up.
- Player expectations: A locked 30 fps experience may be acceptable to one player and inadequate to another. No universal minimum frame rate for reader satisfaction is established.
Do not treat a desktop game’s recommended specification as a direct handheld verdict. Desktop requirements usually assume a different power envelope, cooling capacity and display resolution. Conversely, a visually ambitious title can be comfortable on a handheld if its settings scale well and its demanding systems are not active all the time.
The operating system and compatibility layer can block a game
Steam Deck runs SteamOS. Games without native Linux builds generally run through Proton, Valve’s Windows compatibility layer. Valve states that the game and all of its middleware must be supported by Proton for Verified status, explicitly including anti-cheat support. The official criteria are documented at Steam Deck Verified.

This creates a software bottleneck independent of graphics performance. A game can fit within the handheld’s CPU and GPU limits yet fail because its launcher, copy-protection component, video playback module, online service or anti-cheat system depends on Windows behavior that is unavailable or disabled in the target configuration.
That does not mean every anti-cheat system fails on Linux, nor that Windows-based handhelds face the identical barrier. Different handhelds use different operating systems, drivers and compatibility systems. Diagnose the exact device and current game configuration instead of generalizing from one platform.
Software status can also change. Game patches, launcher updates, Proton versions, anti-cheat support, graphics drivers and handheld firmware may improve or break compatibility. A rating is a snapshot of a particular configuration, not a permanent property of the game.

Controls can turn a working game into a poor handheld game
PC games often assume a full keyboard, a high-precision mouse and many simultaneous inputs. A handheld supplies a fixed set of buttons, sticks, triggers and sometimes trackpads or a touchscreen. The question is not merely whether a button can be mapped; it is whether every part of the game remains practical without leaving the controls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsValve’s Deck criteria check whether the physical controller can reach all game content, whether prompts match the active controls and whether players can enter text with a controller or an automatically invoked on-screen keyboard. A title that displays keyboard instructions while the player is using a gamepad creates avoidable friction. A trackpad can make pointer-based games possible, but it may still be slower and less comfortable than a desktop mouse.
Common control trouble
- Real-time strategy or management interfaces that require frequent pointer selection.
- Role-playing games with many hotkeys and radial menus designed for a keyboard.
- Games that hide essential actions behind function keys, number rows or modifier combinations.
- Chat, naming, search and configuration screens that require text entry.
- Launchers or installers that cannot be navigated reliably with buttons.
Manual remapping can solve a missing shortcut, but it cannot always make a dense interface comfortable. Check whether the game offers a controller mode, scalable menus and context-sensitive controls before assuming a community layout will fix everything.
Small displays expose text and interface design weaknesses
Valve’s public Deck criteria list 1280×800 as the preferred resolution and 1280×720 as supported. The detailed checklist requires the smallest font to be at least 9 pixels high at 1280×800 for approval and recommends aiming for 12 pixels where possible. These are Valve’s Steam Deck review specifications, not a standard shared by every handheld.
At a handheld viewing distance, a desktop interface that looks fine on a large monitor can become tiring. Fixed-size subtitles, compact inventory grids, thin status bars and tooltips may be technically present but difficult to read. A game can render at a supported resolution and still fail the practical test of legibility.

What to inspect
- Subtitle, dialogue and tutorial text at the game’s default resolution.
- Whether menus scale independently from the 3D scene.
- Whether important icons have labels or rely on tiny artwork.
- Whether the HUD remains readable when the device is held at normal distance.
- Whether a lower rendering resolution makes text blurrier than expected.
Increasing interface scale is usually preferable to lowering the entire rendering resolution. If a game has no scale control, a desktop-style layout may remain uncomfortable even when frame rate is stable.
Launchers and interruptions add another layer of friction
A separate launcher can require pointer precision, a keyboard, account confirmation or interaction with a compatibility warning before the actual game starts. Valve’s Verified criteria expect launchers to be navigable with a controller and the title not to display compatibility warnings. Its Playable examples include using touch input to operate a launcher.
A launcher is not automatically a failure. The relevant questions are whether it appears every time, whether all required controls are reachable, whether text entry works and whether an update changes its behavior. A title that needs one predictable touchscreen action may be acceptable; one that repeatedly opens an inaccessible desktop dialog is not.
Storage space is a separate constraint
Insufficient storage can prevent installation or updates, but it does not make a game graphically difficult to run. Valve documents microSD expansion for Steam Deck as additional game storage. A card can solve a lack-of-space problem; it cannot increase frame rate, enlarge text, remap controls or make unsupported middleware work.

Compatibility labels are graded and device-specific
Valve and Xbox do not use interchangeable labels. Valve’s Steam Deck program describes four statuses; Xbox’s handheld program has its own categories.
| Program | Category | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Deck | Verified | Works well out of the box under Valve’s checks for performance, input, display and software behavior. |
| Steam Deck | Playable | Usable, but may require manual tweaking, a community layout, touch input or another workaround. |
| Steam Deck | Unsupported | Currently nonfunctional on the Deck. |
| Steam Deck | Unknown | Not yet reviewed by the program. |
| Xbox handheld program | Handheld optimized | Xbox’s highest handheld-oriented category under its own criteria. |
| Xbox handheld program | Mostly compatible | Generally usable with some limitations under Xbox’s criteria. |
| Xbox handheld program | Unsupported | Not supported for that program’s handheld scenario. |
| Xbox handheld program | Not tested | No assessment is available in the program. |
Use the label for the exact device and date. Valve says Deck reviews are ongoing, and device or software improvements can allow a previously unsupported game to work. An Xbox category should not be translated into a Steam Deck category, or vice versa.
A practical method for diagnosing a difficult game
- Identify the exact target. Record the handheld model, operating system, game edition, current patch and whether you are using native software or a compatibility layer.
- Check the current device-specific status. Read the game’s compatibility details rather than relying on an old badge, a desktop specification or a report for another handheld.
- Classify the symptom. Separate launch failure, authentication failure, low or unstable frame rate, control problems, unreadable text and insufficient storage.
- Test default settings first. Use the device’s supported resolution and the game’s recommended handheld profile before changing several variables at once.
- Check software dependencies. Look for launcher behavior, required middleware, anti-cheat status and any compatibility warning. A graphics reduction cannot repair a blocked dependency.
- Verify input coverage. Confirm that menus, inventory, map, text fields and in-game actions are reachable with the built-in controls. Remap only after identifying the missing action.
- Inspect legibility at normal distance. Read subtitles, tutorials and inventory text without leaning toward the screen. Increase interface scale where available.
- Measure sustained performance in demanding play. Compare the same resolution, settings and game section. Do not treat one short opening scene as a universal result.
- Recheck after updates. Game patches, drivers, firmware and compatibility-layer revisions can change both ratings and behavior.
How to compare games or handhelds fairly
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Device and operating system | Which exact model and OS are being tested? Do not assume Steam Deck’s Proton considerations apply identically elsewhere. |
| Performance | What resolution, graphics preset and demanding gameplay section were used? Are the results sustained rather than a short peak? |
| Display and interface | Are subtitles and menus readable, and does the game offer scalable text or interface elements? |
| Input | Can every mode, menu and text field be used with built-in controls, and do prompts match? |
| Software compatibility | Are the game, launcher, middleware and anti-cheat supported on the target OS? |
| Rating scope and date | Which program assessed the title, which device does the label cover and when was it updated? |
Avoid unsupported claims such as a universal percentage of PC games that work, a model-wide performance ranking or an average battery life for every title. Those figures depend on test methods and conditions that are not represented by a compatibility label.

A visually demanding game has a stable but low frame rate
Lower expensive graphics options, confirm the target resolution and judge sustained play rather than a menu or cutscene. If the game remains below your acceptable target, the limitation is performance, not storage or controls.
The game launches but asks for keyboard input
Check for an on-screen keyboard, a controller text-entry path or a remappable action. If a launcher repeatedly requires pointer-and-keyboard interaction, classify the title as setup-dependent rather than fully seamless.
Online play fails while offline play works
Investigate the game’s online middleware and anti-cheat support for the specific operating system and compatibility layer. Lowering graphics settings will not fix authentication or kernel-level software dependencies.
The game is marked Unknown
Unknown means the program has not assessed it; it is not a positive or negative performance result. Look for current device-specific reports and be prepared for manual testing, especially after updates.

The useful definition of handheld compatibility
A difficult PC game is not necessarily one with high desktop system requirements. Difficulty comes from the interaction between sustained performance, portable power and cooling, operating-system support, middleware, controls, display legibility and available storage. Evaluate each dimension separately, use the rating system that covers your exact device, and treat both labels and workarounds as changeable when software is updated.
