A horror game is survival horror when staying alive is a meaningful part of how you play, not just what the story is about. The game typically makes you vulnerable, puts limits on supplies or safety, and asks you to explore, solve problems, or decide when to confront a threat. No single feature is mandatory: the label describes the combined effect of the game’s mechanics, atmosphere, and pacing.
What is survival horror?
Survival horror is a flexible genre of horror games in which enduring danger shapes the player’s decisions. The key question is not simply whether the protagonist is trapped in a frightening place. It is whether the player must manage risk and make choices that affect their ability to continue.

A useful way to judge a game is to ask: does it make survival a real gameplay pressure, and do vulnerability, exploration, or resource decisions help sustain the fear? A game can be frightening without being strongly survival horror. If the player is consistently powerful, combat is plentiful, and scares come mostly from tone or scripted moments, it may fit horror or action horror more closely. This is a practical distinction, not an official industry rule.
What makes survival matter during play?
Limited resources make choices consequential
Scarce ammunition or healing supplies can turn every encounter into a decision: fight, avoid the enemy, escape, or conserve what you have. Those limits matter most when a choice has consequences later, rather than functioning as a minor inconvenience. Limited ammunition is an established convention, but a game does not need to use it to qualify as survival horror.

Combat can still be part of the genre. Capcom director Koshi Nakanishi described the pillars of Resident Evil as “fear and horror, exploration of the environment, puzzle-solving elements, resource management, and combat against enemies” in a 2016 Capcom interview. The point is not to remove fighting, but to make it one part of surviving rather than an effortless answer to every threat.
Vulnerability gives threats weight
A vulnerable character makes danger feel immediate. They may be outmatched, short on supplies, or unable to deal with every enemy directly. Avoiding a threat or making a narrow escape can therefore feel as important as defeating one.
In the same Capcom interview, the developers connected the ordinary protagonist and first-person perspective of Resident Evil 7 with a sense of helplessness. This is one way to heighten vulnerability, not a requirement for the genre: a game can create the same pressure through other perspectives and mechanics.

- Classic Craft-Based Survival Horror - Scavenge every corner of Rutherford Ranch to stay alive. From haunted forests, a derelict town, to infested bunkers. Explore a world teeming with danger as you gather vital resources, craft essential gear, upgrade your campsite, and rebuild outposts to have somewhere to hide.
- Day Prepares You. Night Hunts You - A dynamic day-night cycle that changes the world. Use daylight wisely to explore, scavenge supplies, craft what you need, and prepare for what’s coming. When night falls, the real nightmares come out to play. More enemies appear, stronger and more aggressive than before. The landscape becomes harder to navigate with just your flashlight. Sometimes your best hope is to find shelter and hunker down till morning.
- Deadly Silence Goes A Long Way - Stealth and combat go hand-in-hand here as many of the twisted creatures in Rutherford Ranch hunt and stalk you by sound alone. Brute force will often just land you in an early grave. Use sound to your advantage, luring creatures away from your path or cleverly leading them straight into deadly traps you laid.
- 80’s Vibes Meets Comic Book Flair - Inspired by the award-nominated comic book series created by Kyle Starks and Artyom Topilin, I Hate This Place comes to life with bold colors, a punchy retro comic book style, and a heavy dose of '80s flair. A unique blend of horror, dark humor, and just the right touch of camp and gore where unsettling dread meets stylized charm.
- Languages – English in-game voice. English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Simplified Chinese, and Spanish (Spain) in-game text.
Exploration and puzzles turn danger into a route through the world
Many survival-horror games make progress depend on searching dangerous places for clues, keys, tools, or routes forward. Puzzles and obstacles break up combat, while revisiting locations can make familiar spaces feel newly risky. The result is a progression loop built around moving through and understanding a threatening environment, not just defeating a sequence of enemies.
Capcom names exploration and puzzle-solving among the Resident Evil series’ pillars. Discussing the 2019 Resident Evil 2, producer Tsuyoshi Kanda described “slower paced, resource management, survival-horror adventure gameplay with backtracking metroidvania exploration puzzle-solving” in a Game Informer interview published July 5, 2018. That is a description of one game’s design, not a checklist for every title.
How do atmosphere and pacing contribute?
Survival systems create pressure; atmosphere shapes how that pressure feels. Sound, lighting, environmental details, narrative, and the anticipation of what might be ahead can sustain dread between encounters. Slow pacing often gives the player time to notice danger and worry about what a decision might cost.

- Fight or Flight- Hunt prey, fight larger enemies and use stealth and agility to sneak past apex predators unnoticed.
- Award Winning- Category winning of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP): Prestigious Playing For The Planet Green Games Jam 2021 Award and the 'Best in Play GDC Award.
- Explore a beautiful world- Explore a living, breathing world full of unique species of plants, insects, and animals. Run, jump, climb, and glide through beautiful environments
- Uncover Hidden Mysteries- Advance through the world and complete the main story, or explore of the beaten path and embark on side quests to uncover Away's hidden mysteries
- Photo Mode- Freeze the sugar glider anywhere and move the camera while the rest of the world continues in ambient motion
These elements work together rather than replacing one another. A frightening setting alone does not make a game survival horror if the player’s ability to survive is never in doubt. Likewise, resource limits can feel like routine inventory management if the game does not build tension around them.
Does the camera perspective determine the genre?
No. Fixed cameras, first-person views, and over-the-shoulder cameras can all support survival horror. Perspective affects what the player can see and how close danger feels, but it does not establish whether the gameplay is focused on surviving or on dominating threats.
Resident Evil 2 producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi summed up the distinction in the same Game Informer interview: “Resident Evil 2 2019 is over-the-shoulder plus survival horror.” The camera describes the presentation; survival horror describes the game’s broader play and tone.

- A dark, enthralling 4-5 hour narrative to keep you hooked and guessing until the end. Gorgeous visuals as you traverse numerous and diverse environments, presented with a cinematic, film-like aesthetic. Ranged and melee combat with upgradeable weapons to help you survive your nightmarish journey.
- A stellar voice cast, starring Valerie Rose Lohman (What Remains of Edith Finch, Wolfenstein: Youngblood), Jonah Scott (Dying Light 2: Stay Human, Date Everything), and Aleks Le (Persona 3: Reload, Marvel Rivals, Ghost of Yotei).
- A beautifully dynamic and haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Jacob Noska, and Jonah Henthorne: members of the band Auric Echoes.
- The puzzles you encounter are more than your standard key hunt. Project Songbird rewards those with an eye for detail, making each puzzle a challenge of creativity and wits.
- The combat of Project Songbird offers a variety of approaches inspired by the classics of the survival horror genre. Melee and gunplay is slow and weighty, and ammo is incredibly scarce. However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.
Where did the genre come from?
The lineage does not have one uncontested starting point. The 1992 game Alone in the Dark helped establish conventions associated with survival horror, including claustrophobic spaces, stories revealed through objects, limited ammunition, cinematic presentation, and fixed third-person camera angles, according to the Game Developers Conference session description for designer Frederick Raynal’s 2012 postmortem.
The label was used in the introduction to 1996’s Resident Evil, and that series helped popularize the category. A 2012 thesis from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona discusses both the earlier influence of Alone in the Dark and the genre’s flexible boundaries. It is more accurate to describe a lineage of influences than to credit one game as the sole inventor.

The boundary is a matter of degree, not a strict dividing line. Compare a game’s systems and the way they shape play rather than relying on its camera, setting, or marketing label alone.
| What to compare | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Player power | Is the player vulnerable, and can threats be bypassed or escaped instead of reliably dominated? |
| Resource pressure | How scarce are ammunition, healing, inventory space, or other survival resources? Do decisions affect later encounters? |
| Progression | Does progress rely substantially on exploration, puzzles, clues, and backtracking, or mainly on direct combat? |
| Pacing and atmosphere | Does the game sustain dread through its environment, sound, story, and anticipation, or emphasize frequent action? |
| Presentation | How does the camera shape what the player sees and feels? Assess that separately from whether the gameplay is shooter-focused. |
A game may mix survival-horror and action elements in different proportions. Calling it a hybrid is often more precise than forcing it into one category. A useful shorthand is: the more the game makes endurance, risk, and constrained choices central to play, the stronger its survival-horror character.
