What Makes a Galaxy a Candidate for Further Study?

A galaxy is a candidate when its observed properties could answer an important scientific question and follow-up observations can distinguish that interpretation from plausible alternatives.

A galaxy becomes a candidate for further study when its observed properties could help answer an important scientific question and the uncertainty can be reduced with better observations. It might be unusually distant, bright, chemically developed for its apparent age, morphologically distinctive, involved in an interaction, or difficult to reconcile with current models.

“Candidate” means promising but not yet proven. Astronomers test the measurements, eliminate plausible impostors, and rank follow-up observations by how much they could distinguish competing explanations.

Candidate status depends on the question

There is no universal brightness, size, redshift, rarity or age threshold that automatically turns a galaxy into a target. The same object can be highly valuable for one project and unhelpful for another. Researchers begin by asking what the galaxy could teach them: how galaxies assembled, how mergers drive growth, when stars and black holes first appeared, how elements accumulated, or whether a model of the early universe is missing something.

An unusual appearance is therefore only a starting point. A very red source may be a distant young galaxy, a dusty galaxy much closer to Earth, or a cool star in the Milky Way. It becomes a strong candidate when the evidence is credible, the alternatives are testable, and a new observation could resolve an important uncertainty.

How astronomers find potential candidates

1. Search survey images across several wavelengths

Large surveys record thousands or millions of sources through filters that cover different wavelength bands. A galaxy’s brightness in each band forms a rough spectral-energy distribution. For distant objects, the expansion of the universe shifts the light toward longer wavelengths. A sharp spectral break moving from one filter to the next can indicate that a source lies at a large redshift.

At this stage, astronomers usually estimate a photometric redshift. They compare the measured colors with libraries of model galaxy spectra and calculate a probability distribution rather than a single certain distance. The result may say that a source is most consistent with a high redshift while still allowing several lower-redshift solutions.

2. Look for scientifically distinctive properties

Survey teams flag sources whose measurements could illuminate their project’s central question. Useful clues include:

  • Extreme distance: A galaxy seen at a very early cosmic epoch tests models of how quickly galaxies formed.
  • Unexpected brightness or mass: A luminous object soon after the Big Bang may challenge assumptions about star-formation efficiency or assembly times.
  • Apparent chemical maturity: Elements such as oxygen imply earlier generations of massive stars and can constrain the timing of stellar evolution.
  • Distinctive morphology: Rings, compact nuclei, tidal features, bars or multiple components can reveal interactions and internal growth processes.
  • Unusual spectra or colors: These may indicate dust, active black holes, intense star formation or an object class not represented well in existing models.
  • Model tension: A source that does not fit established predictions can be more valuable than an ordinary example, provided the measurement and interpretation survive scrutiny.

Why a color-selected galaxy is not automatically distant

Broad filters compress a complex spectrum into a few brightness measurements. Galaxies at very different redshifts can therefore have similar broadband colors. Dust can redden a relatively nearby galaxy until it resembles a distant source, while cool brown dwarfs can mimic the colors expected from early galaxies.

Micaela Bagley, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Texas at Austin and a CEERS member, has summarized the problem this way: “Additionally, galaxies at different redshifts can have similar colors in broadband filters, making it difficult to distinguish their redshifts based only on photometry.” Photometric selection is useful for finding targets, but it does not by itself establish distance.

How teams screen false positives and bad measurements

Before assigning expensive telescope time, teams inspect both the source and the data around it. A typical screening process includes:

  • Detection significance: Is the source detected strongly enough above the image background to support its measured colors?
  • Wavelength coverage: Were the relevant filters observed deeply enough, or is a supposed color caused by a non-detection?
  • Image artifacts: Could detector effects, cosmic rays, diffraction features or imperfect background subtraction create the apparent source?
  • Nearby objects: Is light from a neighboring galaxy, star or unresolved blend contaminating the photometry?
  • Size and morphology: Does the source look extended like a galaxy, or point-like like a star, after accounting for the telescope’s resolution?
  • Alternative redshift solutions: Does the probability distribution have a strong secondary peak at a lower redshift?
  • Comparison with stars and known contaminants: Do the colors match cool stars, dusty galaxies or other common interlopers?
  • Visual inspection: Does the candidate remain credible when examined in every available band rather than only in the discovery filter?

The BoRG candidate-selection work illustrates this combined approach: detection and color cuts were used with redshift-probability information, comparisons with stars and visual checks. Such safeguards reduce, but do not eliminate, contamination.

What follow-up observations can establish

Narrower-band or longer-wavelength imaging

Additional imaging can test whether the original color pattern is real. Narrow filters sample smaller portions of the spectrum and can reveal whether a suspected break falls where a high-redshift model predicts. Longer-wavelength data can expose dust emission or light from an older, lower-redshift population that broadband optical images conceal.

Spectroscopy

A spectrograph spreads the light by wavelength instead of recording only filter totals. A spectral break or an emission line can provide a much more precise redshift, while the line strengths and shapes carry information about gas, star formation, chemical enrichment and possible black-hole activity.

Spectroscopy is often the decisive step for an extreme claim. As Bagley has noted, photometric candidates “highlight the need to obtain spectra to confirm high-redshift candidates.” A target is especially valuable when a feasible spectrum could separate two scientifically different explanations.

Multiwavelength and time-dependent checks

Infrared, optical, ultraviolet, radio and X-ray observations probe different physical components. For example, X-rays can support an active nucleus interpretation, while infrared colors may reveal dust. Repeated observations can identify a variable foreground source or moving object that was mistaken for a distant galaxy.

How astronomers prioritize a list of candidates

Programs commonly balance scientific importance against confidence, feasibility and the value of the result beyond one object. The following questions provide a practical framework:

Decision axis What the team asks
Scientific importance Which open question would this target help answer?
Distinctiveness Is its distance, brightness, chemistry, shape or interaction unusual in a meaningful way?
Measurement confidence Are the detections, colors, morphology and redshift probability reliable?
Competing explanations What lower-redshift galaxies, stars or artifacts could produce the same signal?
Discriminating power Would the planned image or spectrum clearly separate those explanations?
Feasibility Is the source bright and observable enough for the available instrument and exposure time?
Comparative value Can it be placed in a sample or compared with useful analogues rather than interpreted alone?

There is no universal numerical ranking formula. A short program may favor the single most extreme source; a survey may choose a less spectacular target because it fills a gap in a representative sample.

Case study: JADES-GS-z14-0 and the need to verify an extreme claim

NASA’s May 30, 2024 report on JADES-GS-z14-0 shows why an extraordinary candidate receives both urgent attention and extra skepticism. Early observations strongly suggested a redshift above 14, but the galaxy’s surprising brightness and its proximity to another source made researchers cautious about contamination and interpretation.

New NIRCam imaging with narrower filters strengthened the high-redshift explanation. NIRSpec spectroscopy then measured a redshift of 14.32, with an uncertainty of +0.08 and −0.20. NASA reported that the light was emitted less than 300 million years after the Big Bang. The spectrum also indicated that the light was less blue than expected, consistent with dust, while MIRI data implied strong hydrogen and oxygen emission. Oxygen at such an early epoch points to earlier generations of massive stars. Those details make the galaxy useful for testing models; they are not requirements that every candidate must satisfy.

Case study: a candidate that was reclassified

NASA’s CEERS work selected candidates from NIRCam images with photometric redshifts above 11. Spectroscopy confirmed Maisie’s Galaxy at redshift 11.4. A second candidate, however, was found to be at redshift 4.9.

The lower-redshift result did not make the observation worthless. It demonstrated how photometric degeneracies operate and supplied information that can improve galaxy-spectrum models. Candidate programs should expect some objects to be reclassified rather than treating every non-confirmation as a failure.

Case study: unusual interactions are valuable as samples

NASA describes AM 2026-424 as a rare, short-lived ring-shaped collision. The ring structure is expected to persist for only about 100 million years, making the system a fleeting phase of a galactic encounter. Its importance is not simply that it looks unusual: a Hubble program sought to build a robust sample of nearby interacting galaxies.

That comparative sample can help researchers understand how mergers contribute to galaxy growth and can identify promising systems for later Webb observations. NASA also notes the historical context of Halton Arp’s 1966 compendium of 338 unusual-looking interacting galaxies. The number describes that catalog, not the total population of unusual galaxies.

Case study: little red dots and observational bias

NASA’s July 29, 2026 report discusses the Saguaro, a lower-redshift galaxy with a compact red nucleus surrounded by a spiral host. Researchers combined Hubble and Webb data to test whether the nucleus met the characteristics associated with “little red dots,” examined whether the host and nucleus could be separated, considered X-ray emission, and simulated how the system might appear at higher redshift.

The authors present this as one proposed pathway, not an explanation for every little red dot. The example shows why candidate selection must account for instrument resolution and selection effects: a compact nucleus that is distinguishable nearby may blend with its host when viewed at a much greater distance.

When does a candidate become a confirmed galaxy?

Confirmation is tied to the claim being tested. A spectrum can confirm a high redshift, but additional data may still be needed to establish a galaxy’s mass, chemical composition, morphology or power source. A target can also be confirmed as a real source while its initial interpretation is revised.

The BoRG-JWST study, published April 10, 2025, demonstrates the distinction. Of 21 observed primary targets, 12 were confirmed as high-redshift galaxies. The remainder included lower-redshift interlopers, brown dwarfs or inconclusive cases. That fraction belongs to that observed sample and should not be treated as a universal success rate for galaxy-candidate searches.

A practical checklist for reading a galaxy claim

  1. Identify the claim: Is the source proposed as distant, unusually massive, chemically mature, interacting or something else?
  2. Check the evidence type: Was the claim based only on broadband photometry, or is there a spectrum?
  3. Look for alternatives: Could dust, a foreground star, a lower-redshift galaxy, blending or an artifact explain the signal?
  4. Read the uncertainty: Examine the full redshift probability distribution and measurement errors rather than only the best-fit value.
  5. Ask what follow-up would decide: A credible candidate should have an observation that can discriminate among the leading explanations.
  6. Separate source reality from interpretation: A genuine galaxy may still be assigned the wrong distance, age, mass or power source.
  7. Check the comparison set: One spectacular object is more informative when researchers can compare it with representative galaxies or analogues.

Common mistakes in describing candidates

  • Calling a photometric redshift a measured redshift.
  • Presenting a record-holder label without its date, since later observations can change the record.
  • Treating an unusual color as proof of a distant galaxy.
  • Assuming every lower-redshift interloper provides no scientific value.
  • Generalizing from one object, such as the Saguaro, to an entire class of little red dots.
  • Ignoring selection effects caused by filter depth, telescope resolution or wavelength coverage.
  • Confusing a candidate for further study with a confirmed explanation.

The central test is simple: does the object offer a credible route to answering an important question, and can additional observations tell the leading explanations apart? If both answers are yes, astronomers have a strong candidate—even when the eventual result is confirmation, reclassification or an unresolved case.
