G-SHOCK MR-G is Casio’s flagship line: it keeps the brand’s shock-resistant purpose while emphasizing advanced materials, detailed finishing and multi-component protection. MR-G is not one fixed specification, though. The materials, construction and features differ by reference, so the exact model matters more than the line name alone.
MR-G is the flagship, not a different kind of G-SHOCK
Casio describes MR-G as inheriting G-SHOCK’s shock-resistant structure and design DNA. Its distinction is how that toughness is executed: premium materials and finishing are combined with carefully assembled components intended to protect the watch. Casio says MR-G watches are made at the Premium Line at its Yamagata Factory in Japan. Casio’s MR-G category comparison identifies the line as its flagship, while noting that technologies and materials vary by model.

That makes “metal instead of resin” an incomplete explanation. Casio’s category comparison describes G-STEEL as using a resin case with a stainless-steel bezel, Full Metal as using stainless steel for the case, bezel and band, and MT-G as combining stainless steel with carbon-reinforced resin in some constructions. MR-G is characterized by titanium watches, sapphire crystal, craftsmanship and advanced finishing. These are category-level descriptions, not guarantees about every reference in each family.

Casio describes its Multi-Guard Structure as a hybrid, multi-component construction designed to combine shock resistance with a finished metal appearance. Some models also use a Clad Guard Structure, which integrates protection for the crown and buttons. Specific arrangements depend on the watch; look up the construction listed for the exact reference rather than assuming all MR-Gs use the same system. Casio’s MR-G overview explains these structures.

Material treatment is another part of the design. Casio says certain pure-titanium parts receive a double-hardening process that combines deep-layer hardening with a DLC surface coating. In other words, the line’s emphasis is not only on which material is used, but also on how components are treated and assembled.
What model-specific materials and features look like
MRG-B5000: specialized titanium alloys
For the MRG-B5000, Casio lists COBARION for the bezel top, DAT55G titanium alloy for the band, and Ti64 titanium alloy for the case, back cover and buttons. Casio describes COBARION as about four times harder than pure titanium and DAT55G as about three times harder; these are manufacturer comparisons, not independent test results. The model also has sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating and a Multi-Guard Structure. Casio’s MRG-B5000 specifications give the model details.

- Case Diameter: 53.8mm
- Water resistant 200m (660ft): in general, suitable for professional marine activity and serious surface water sports, but not diving
MRG-B2100B: solar power and water resistance
Casio describes the MRG-B2100B as a titanium watch with sapphire crystal, Multi-Guard Structure, magnetic resistance, Tough Solar charging and 200-meter water resistance. That combination belongs to this model; it should not be read as a universal MR-G specification.
MRG-G1000B-1A: GPS and radio timekeeping
The MRG-G1000B-1A illustrates a different feature set. Casio lists GPS hybrid timekeeping, radio-controlled Multi Band 6 time adjustment, Tough Solar, a titanium case and band, sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating, and 200-meter water resistance. Its product page is for an older model and does not establish current retail availability.

How to compare an MR-G with another G-SHOCK
Compare the actual references side by side. A line label alone does not tell you whether a particular watch has the materials, functions or proportions you want.
- Materials and finish: Check the case, bezel and band materials, plus any surface treatments.
- Crystal: Confirm whether the exact watch lists sapphire or another crystal.
- Protection: Look for the named shock-resistant construction and any stated crown or button protection.
- Timekeeping and power: Check whether the model offers GPS, radio control, Bluetooth or solar charging; these features vary.
- Fit and intended use: Compare dimensions, weight, water resistance and the functions you will actually use.
- Price and finishing: Check the current price of each exact reference and decide whether its materials and finishing justify the difference for you. The specifications above do not establish a current, comparable price set.
MR-G’s place in G-SHOCK history
Casio’s official history dates the first MR-G to November 1996 and describes it as the first metal G-SHOCK in the historical lineup. That origin helps explain the line’s continuing combination of metal construction and G-SHOCK’s shock-resistant identity. Casio’s MR-G history and category page provides the line’s background.
