Start with the garment’s sewn-in care label: it takes precedence over general advice because fabric and print methods differ. If the label is missing and the tee appears washable, a cautious default is to turn it inside out, wash cold on a gentle cycle with similar colors and mild detergent, then air dry. These are common apparel-provider recommendations, not a guarantee against fading, cracking, peeling, or shrinkage.
How to wash a graphic tee
- Check the care label. Follow its instructions before choosing a cycle or temperature. GINETEX, the International Association for Textile Care Labelling, says care symbols indicate “the maximum level of treatment an article can withstand without being damaged.” The symbols cover washing, bleaching, drying, ironing, and professional textile care. A label describes treatment limits; it does not guarantee that every stain will come out. GINETEX’s care-symbol guide explains the system.
- Turn the shirt inside out. Custom Ink, Printful, and Threadless all recommend inside-out washing for their printed apparel. It is a common care practice, not a measured guarantee of reduced wear. Custom Ink, Printful, and Threadless provide their respective guidance.
- Use cold water and a gentle cycle if the label permits. Custom Ink recommends cold, gentle washing unless the garment is heavily soiled. Printful specifies cold water, a gentle cycle, and similar colors for its DTG apparel.
- Choose mild detergent. Printful recommends mild detergent for its printed apparel. Its instructions and a screen-print care guide advise avoiding fabric softener; the screen-print guide also advises against bleach. These recommendations are not proof that every print chemistry has identical restrictions, so follow the garment label and maker’s instructions. - Dry according to the label. Custom Ink and Printful allow low-heat tumble drying in their general guidance and offer air drying as an alternative. Air drying is the more cautious option when you want to avoid dryer heat. Threadless notes that many of its garments contain cotton and may shrink; hanging or laying them flat can lessen shrinkage, but no method guarantees that a garment will not shrink. Threadless’s instructions give its product-specific advice.
- Keep the iron off the design. Do not iron directly over a printed area. If ironing is allowed for the garment, Printful advises using a cool iron on the inside. Check the label first.
What to do when the care label is missing
Look for the maker’s product page or care instructions first. If those are unavailable and the tee appears washable, use the cautious routine above: inside out, cold water, gentle cycle, similar colors, mild detergent, and air drying. This is a starting point drawn from apparel-provider guidance, not a guarantee for an unknown fabric or decoration.

How print method and fabric affect care
Screen printing
A decorated-apparel care guide recommends washing screen-printed shirts inside out in cold water, drying on low heat, avoiding bleach and fabric softener, and keeping the iron off the decoration. It also says material-specific needs differ, so the garment label should guide treatment. Read the guide.

Printful’s advice for its DTG-printed apparel is cold water, inside out, a gentle cycle with similar colors, mild detergent, and either hanging to dry or low-heat tumble drying. It advises a cool iron inside out, never over the print. Threadless describes its apparel as DTG printed and gives similar general care advice. These providers’ instructions apply to their products; they are not a universal guarantee for every DTG garment. Printful and Threadless.

Heat transfers and vinyl
One decorated-apparel care source recommends treating heat-transfer and vinyl designs similarly to screen prints and warns against softener in connection with transfer adhesion. Because products and materials vary, use the specific garment’s label and maker’s instructions rather than assuming all transfers behave alike. UWE Certified Print RP’s guidance.
Fabric composition
The decoration is only part of the decision. Cotton content can mean some shrinkage, while other fabric blends may have different care needs. GINETEX’s guidance reflects the most care-sensitive aspect of a textile item, so the label’s instructions matter even when general print advice recommends a particular routine.

What careful washing can—and cannot—promise
The cited sources offer care recommendations, not a controlled comparison of print durability. They do not establish a reliable number of washes a printed tee will withstand or a percentage by which a particular routine extends its life. Fabric, decoration, and product instructions vary, so no single routine can promise that a print will not fade, crack, or peel, or that the shirt will not shrink.
