Make’s May 2015 report on a MakerCon interview with Raspberry Pi founder Eben Upton connects the board’s popularity to the Raspberry Pi Foundation’s growing hardware and education work. It also describes production moving from China to the UK, where Sony was making boards in South Wales. The report is a summary, not a transcript, and does not identify which Raspberry Pi model Upton discussed.

What the interview report covers

Alasdair Allan’s article, “Live from MakerCon — An Interview with Eben Upton”, was published by Make on May 13, 2015. It describes a conversation about Raspberry Pi’s origins and popularity, and how the project’s success enabled the Foundation to take on work in both hardware and education.

Make presents the piece as a report and summary. It does not reproduce the interviewer’s full questions or Upton’s answers, and it contains no verbatim quotations from the conversation. Although the page embeds a video, the written report does not provide a transcript.

Why the report discusses manufacturing in the UK

The article describes a shift in Raspberry Pi production from China to the United Kingdom, with boards being manufactured by Sony in South Wales. Allan characterizes the move as a manufacturing-design challenge: a product shaped around lower labor costs could be more expensive to make in the UK, where labor costs were higher and automation costs lower. The report says design work was needed to adapt; it gives no cost figures or quantified comparison.

What the ISS reference means

The report also mentions Raspberry Pi’s ubiquity and a then-upcoming trip to the International Space Station. That is a reference to plans discussed in 2015, not a current launch update. Make’s text does not name the board model involved, so it cannot support a model-specific account of the planned trip.
