If an Apple update will not download or install, first identify whether the problem is eligibility, the network, the downloaded update file, or installation itself. Check compatibility, storage, Wi‑Fi and power; then retry using the device-specific steps below. An update that appears paused is not necessarily stuck, so do not interrupt an installation just because its progress bar moves slowly.

First identify the device and the stage where the update fails

The steps differ for iPhone or iPad and Mac. Note the exact alert or error code, and whether the update is not offered, will not download, fails while checking or preparing, or appears stuck during installation. Apple describes updating as a sequence of detecting, downloading, preparing and installing; the stage helps narrow down the relevant fix. Apple’s software update process.

Make sure the update is available for your model

An iPhone or iPad must support the iOS or iPadOS release you want. A Mac’s Software Update offers only software compatible with that Mac, so “up to date” does not necessarily mean the model can install the newest major macOS release. Check Apple’s current instructions for your device: iPhone and iPad update eligibility and macOS installation errors.

Check storage, connection and power before retrying

On iPhone or iPad

  • Open Settings > General > [device] Storage and check that there is room for the update. If space is low, remove content or apps you do not need. Apple says the device may temporarily remove apps if you agree, then reinstall them after updating.
  • Connect to Wi‑Fi and power. Pause other downloads; download time depends on the update size and internet speed.
  • If you use a VPN or proxy, it may prevent the device from contacting Apple’s update servers. Follow Apple’s guidance if you continue to see a server or download error.

  • If the installer reports insufficient space, free storage and try again.
  • Back up your Mac before installing where possible.

Apple’s guidance is in If an error occurred while updating or installing macOS.

If an iPhone or iPad update will not download or check for an update

For alerts such as “Unable to Check for Update” or “Unable to Download,” retry once on the same network. If the alert persists, try a different Wi‑Fi network; a VPN or proxy may also interfere with contacting Apple’s update servers.

If a Mac update or macOS installation fails

If Software Update or the installer reports an error, use Apple’s Mac-specific troubleshooting rather than iPhone or iPad steps. For an installer that says it is damaged or cannot be verified, Apple recommends repairing the startup disk from macOS Recovery, deleting the previously downloaded installer and downloading a fresh copy from Apple.

Try Recovery or Safe Mode when the ordinary installer fails

  • If another app or process may be interfering, try installing macOS from macOS Recovery.
  • If you are using Software Update or the App Store, Safe Mode may help when another process is interfering.
  • Disk Utility repair, firmware revival or restoration may apply to particular persistent problems. Firmware revival or restoration is a rare troubleshooting step for Apple silicon or T2 Macs, not a routine first response.

Follow the exact sequence in Apple’s macOS update and installation error guide. If the problem continues, contact Apple Support.

If the progress bar looks stuck during installation

iPhone or iPad

An Apple-logo progress bar can move slowly, appear static or restart while work continues. Keep the device connected to power and wait. If the update never completes or the device becomes unresponsive, follow Apple’s guidance for an Apple logo with a progress bar, including its force-restart instructions. If the Apple-logo progress state remains afterward, Apple says service may be needed.

Mac

A Mac may restart more than once or show a blank screen during installation. Let the process continue: do not put the Mac to sleep or close a laptop’s lid while the update is installing. A pause or blank screen alone is not a reason to interrupt it. See Apple’s update instructions.
