It dims parts of the backlight to make dark areas look deeper while bright areas remain lit. How much that helps—and whether it introduces distracting halos or lost shadow detail—depends on the display’s design, settings, and the content you watch.
What local dimming does
An LCD does not produce its own light; a backlight illuminates the image. Local dimming divides that backlight into zones and adjusts each zone’s brightness. When the picture has a dark region beside a bright highlight, the display can dim the zone behind the dark area while keeping the highlight bright. This can increase perceived contrast, particularly in dark scenes and HDR content.

The control is by zone, not by individual pixel. If a bright object and a dark background share a zone, the backlight cannot illuminate one without affecting the other. Light around the object can appear as a halo, also called halation. Samsung Display explains that OLED avoids this particular effect because its pixels emit light individually and it does not need a backlight.

Dark-room viewing and subtitles
In a dark room, deeper blacks can make bright details stand out. The same conditions also make imperfections easier to see: halos around subtitles, stars, or small lights are especially noticeable against a dark background.

HDR and gaming
Local dimming can help HDR highlights stand out against darker surroundings. For gaming, check the display’s behavior in its game or low-latency mode; some screens change dimming behavior in those modes. Moving objects can also reveal slow zone transitions, trailing glow, or dimming near the object.
Bright rooms and everyday use
On some LED monitors, local dimming can help the screen reach high brightness for a well-lit room. Its value still depends on the particular display. For text, office work, or mixed content, judge whether the improved contrast is noticeable enough to matter and whether transitions or brightness changes distract you.

What to check before choosing a display
- Black levels and contrast: With dimming enabled, do dark areas look deeper while bright parts retain their intended brightness?
- Blooming: Look for halos around subtitles, a bright cursor, or a small highlight on a mostly black screen.
- Shadow detail: Check whether dimming hides subtle detail in dark areas, a problem often called black crush.
- Movement and flicker: Watch moving bright objects on dark backgrounds for trailing glow, dim edges, flicker, or visible zone changes.
- Settings and modes: Try the available dimming levels and the modes you actually use. Stronger dimming may deepen blacks but make artifacts more conspicuous. Some monitors lock local dimming on in HDR, so the feature may not be optional in that mode.
- Backlight design and implementation: Full-array and Mini LED designs generally allow finer control than edge-lit layouts, but the control algorithm matters too. Zone count alone does not establish picture quality.
RTINGS’ TV guidance says not to buy a television solely on its dimming-zone count, and its testing describes possible issues when implementation is imperfect. Its monitor examples include 336 zones for the AOC Q27G3XMN and 1,152 for the AOC Q27G40XMN; those model specifications are not a performance ranking. RTINGS’ Mini LED monitor comparison notes variation between models and the importance of zone control. Check current, model-specific reviews rather than treating a larger number as a guarantee.

How OLED differs
OLED is an alternative way to show bright and dark areas together: each pixel emits its own light rather than relying on a shared backlight. It therefore does not use backlight local dimming and avoids the zone-based halo mechanism described above. That distinction does not establish that OLED is universally better; the evidence here does not settle every trade-off involving brightness, cost, longevity, or a particular use.

- Use a dark scene with subtitles, stars, or another small bright object on a dark background to check both contrast and halos.
- Watch moving content and try the HDR and game modes you expect to use; look for trailing glow, flicker, or lost detail.
- Compare the available dimming settings. Keep the level that improves contrast without making artifacts more distracting. If the display allows it, turning dimming off is reasonable when you prefer the image without it.
- Check independent testing of the exact model. Treat zone count and backlight type as clues, not substitutes for observed performance.
RTINGS’ TV tests examine lighting-zone precision and transitions, while its monitor tests cover contrast, haloing, black crush, transitions, flicker, and settings. These are category-level tests, not a guarantee about every unit, firmware version, or viewing setup.
