Disconnecting does not give the model live web access, fresh online facts, cloud-only features or a way to download something it has never seen. The exact boundary is product-specific: a tool marketed as “local” may still send some features to a server.
What “local AI” means
Local AI, also called on-device inference, runs a model on your own computer or phone instead of sending each prompt to a remote service. The model’s parameter files, the inference runtime and your input are processed by the device’s CPU, GPU or neural accelerator. If those files are present, generation can continue when the network is unavailable.

This is different from an app that merely has a local interface. A program can look like a desktop application while routing prompts, document extraction or search requests to a vendor’s servers. Offline guarantees therefore apply to a named product and workflow, not to every tool that uses the word “local.” Check the vendor’s documentation and test the exact features you intend to use.
What can keep working offline
Chat and generation with a downloaded model
Once a compatible model is stored locally, ordinary prompting can continue with no internet connection. You can ask for explanations, drafts, summaries of text you paste, transformations, brainstorming and other tasks supported by that model. The model generates from its learned parameters and the context you provide; it is not consulting a live website while disconnected.

LM Studio’s official Offline Operation documentation states: “LM Studio can operate entirely offline, just make sure to get some model files first.” Its documented offline functions include chatting with downloaded models and running the local inference service.
Chatting with local documents
Some applications implement retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) by indexing files on the device and supplying relevant passages to the local model. LM Studio says processing for its document-chat RAG feature happens locally and that the document remains on the machine. With that product and a prepared model, you can ask questions about supported PDFs or text files while disconnected.
That statement should not be generalized to every document assistant. A different app may upload a file for cloud extraction, require an online embedding service or use a remote model for the final answer. Look for an explicit on-device processing statement and disable optional sync or telemetry features when privacy matters.
Local servers and a home network
LM Studio documents serving inference on localhost or on a local network as an operation that does not require internet access. This lets another program on the same computer—or an approved device on your home or office network—send requests to the local server. “No internet” does not mean “no network”: a local-network client still needs the devices to reach each other, and firewall rules can block the connection.

Other model-specific work
Offline use can include coding assistance, classification, translation, transcription or image generation when the selected model and application support those jobs and all model files are cached. Capability, speed, context length and file-format support vary widely. Treat each as a compatibility question rather than assuming that a text-chat model can perform every AI task.
What must be prepared while you are connected
Offline reliability is mostly a preparation problem. Complete the following sequence before travelling or entering a dead zone:
- Install the application and runtime. Some tools download a hardware-specific runtime separately from the app. LM Studio lists runtime downloads as an internet-dependent action.
- Choose a model that fits the device. Download the complete model files while online, or transfer compatible files by USB or another local method. LM Studio says models can also be sideloaded rather than obtained through its catalog.
- Open the model once. Let the application finish any conversion, indexing or cache creation. Keep enough free storage for the model, runtime and temporary files.
- Import local documents and build indexes. If your workflow uses RAG, add the files and wait for processing before disconnecting. Keep the original files available if the app needs to rebuild an index.
- Record the exact workflow. Note which model is selected, where files are stored and which local endpoint or port a connected application uses.
- Test in airplane mode. Disable Wi‑Fi and wired networking, launch the app, load the model and run a representative prompt and document query. A successful test is stronger evidence than a marketing label.
What needs an internet connection
| Action | Why it normally needs connectivity | What happens offline |
|---|---|---|
| Searching a model catalog | The app retrieves current listings and metadata from a remote catalog. | Search and newly refreshed listings are unavailable. A previously cached catalog may still be usable in products that support it. |
| Downloading a model | Large model files have to be transferred to the device. | You must use a file already stored locally or transfer it through another offline medium. |
| Downloading or changing runtimes | Hardware-specific runtime packages are fetched from a server. | Only already-installed runtimes can be used. |
| Application updates | The updater checks a vendor server and retrieves new binaries. | No new version, bug fix or security patch can be obtained until you reconnect. |
| Live web search and current sources | The feature depends on remote search indexes, websites or an online retrieval service. | Results are unavailable; the local model cannot see events or pages published after its training and local files. |
| Cloud-only tools and account services | Remote inference, authentication, billing, moderation or synchronization runs on the provider’s infrastructure. | The feature may fail completely or be limited to a cached session, depending on the product. |
Microsoft’s Foundry Local documentation describes the same basic sequence: inference works on-device after a model is downloaded and cached, while the initial download requires internet access. Microsoft says catalog refresh is optional and that Foundry Local can fall back to a cached catalog while offline. These are documented behaviors of that product, not a universal promise for all local-AI software.
What offline local AI cannot provide
Live information
A disconnected model cannot check today’s weather, a newly published regulation, a changing stock price, a current software release or a website you have not saved. It may produce a plausible answer based on older training, but plausibility is not freshness. For time-sensitive work, download authoritative reference material in advance and ask the model to cite the local files, or reconnect and use an online retrieval workflow.

Cloud scale and cloud-only capabilities
Cloud services can offer larger models, more memory, specialized tools, managed search indexes and provider-side accelerators. A laptop running locally may have to use a smaller quantized model, a shorter context window or slower generation. Features such as server-side image analysis, hosted connectors, team sharing and centralized policy enforcement disappear if the application depends on its servers.
New models, plugins and fixes
When disconnected, you cannot discover a newly released model, install a missing plugin, refresh a certificate or apply an update. Prepare alternatives before departure, and reconnect periodically if security updates or model improvements matter to your workflow.
Local versus cloud: choose by the task
| Decision factor | Local inference | Cloud inference |
|---|---|---|
| Connectivity | Can continue after files and software are cached. | Usually requires a working connection for each request or session. |
| Data boundary | In a documented local workflow, prompts and files stay on the device. | Data is sent to the provider under that service’s retention and processing terms. |
| Information freshness | Limited to model knowledge and files stored locally. | Can use current web data or connected services when those features are enabled. |
| Hardware and scale | Constrained by local memory, storage, accelerator and thermals. | Provider hardware can run larger models and absorb burst workloads. |
| Responsiveness | Can avoid round-trip latency and remain useful on unreliable links. | Depends on network quality, server load and service availability. |
| Maintenance | You manage model files, runtimes, updates and storage. | The provider generally manages infrastructure and model deployment. |
Microsoft’s “Build with local AI on Windows” overview describes local inference as complementary to cloud AI: it is useful when an experience benefits from device data, immediate interaction or continued operation without a reliable connection, while cloud services remain suitable for cloud scale or capabilities. A hybrid design can route private or latency-sensitive steps locally and call a cloud service only when current information or greater capacity is required.

Running offline does not bypass the resources a model needs. Larger models consume more RAM or VRAM, longer prompts require more memory, and sustained generation can be limited by cooling and power. Storage must hold model files as well as the operating system and application cache.

LM Studio’s current system guidance provides a concrete example, not a universal threshold:
| Platform | LM Studio guidance | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Silicon Mac | Apple Silicon M1, M2, M3 or M4 with macOS 14 or newer; 16 GB or more RAM recommended. | LM Studio says 8 GB Macs may work with smaller models and modest context sizes. |
| Intel Mac | Currently unsupported by LM Studio. | This is a product-support statement and can change with future releases. |
| Windows x64 | x64 system with AVX2; at least 16 GB RAM and 4 GB dedicated VRAM recommended. | Actual speed and model compatibility depend on model size, quantization and workload. |
| Windows on ARM | Snapdragon X Elite systems are listed among supported Windows platforms. | Check the current application requirements before installing. |
These figures come from LM Studio’s undated system-requirements page and should not be treated as a guarantee that every 16 GB computer will run every model quickly. Check the selected model’s memory needs and the software’s current platform list before buying hardware.

Local processing can reduce exposure because prompts and documents need not leave the device. Verify the vendor’s wording about data handling, then inspect optional features that can still create network traffic:
- Turn off cloud fallback, online search and automatic synchronization if they are not needed.
- Review telemetry, crash-reporting and update settings.
- Restrict a local server to localhost unless another device genuinely needs access.
- Use operating-system firewall rules and authentication where the application supports them.
- Encrypt the device and protect model and document files like any other sensitive data.
“Offline” reduces one transmission path; it does not protect a stolen, unlocked computer or a local network endpoint exposed to untrusted users.

How to verify that a workflow is truly offline
- Disconnect all network interfaces, not just the browser tab. Use airplane mode or disable Ethernet as appropriate.
- Start the application from a cold launch and load the downloaded model.
- Run a simple generation prompt, then repeat it with a document stored locally.
- Watch for login prompts, “connecting” messages, missing-model errors or requests to enable a network connection.
- If the app includes a local server, connect from the intended client on the same machine or LAN and confirm that no internet route is required.
- Reconnect only after recording which functions failed. Those failures define the boundary for your offline plan.
Common failure modes and fixes
The model is listed but will not load
The catalog entry may be only metadata; the model files or runtime may be missing. Reconnect to download them, or sideload a compatible copy and verify its format and checksum if the distributor provides one.
Document chat asks for a network
The app may use a cloud embedding or extraction service, or indexing may not have finished. Complete indexing while connected, select a documented local model and test again with networking disabled.
Generation is extremely slow or stops
The model may exceed available RAM or VRAM, forcing swapping or an unsupported acceleration path. Use a smaller or more aggressively quantized model, shorten the context and close other memory-heavy applications. Slower output is a hardware trade-off, not evidence that the model is consulting the internet.

Offline output is not automatically verified. Ask for references to your local files, provide dated source material and independently check high-stakes claims when you regain connectivity.
A practical decision rule
Choose local inference when the work can be completed from a prepared model and local inputs, and when privacy, immediate response or resilience to outages matters more than live information and cloud scale. Keep a cloud option for tasks that require current web content, large hosted models, managed connectors or provider services. For many people the most reliable setup is hybrid: prepare a capable local fallback for drafting and private files, then use online tools selectively when the task genuinely depends on the outside world.
