There is no single screw length for every corrugated metal roof. Choose a fastener approved for the panel profile and the supporting material, then size it to pass through the panel and any intervening layers while achieving the panel maker’s required penetration into the support. Manufacturer instructions control: published recommendations differ even for 7/8-inch corrugated panels.
Start with the panel maker’s fastener schedule
Corrugation profile, panel thickness, support material and roof assembly all affect fastener selection. Use the installation instructions for the exact panel system rather than treating a screw length from another product as universal. For example, two manufacturers give different guidance for their 7/8-inch corrugated panels:

| Panel system and source | Published guidance | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| S3 Metals 7/8-inch corrugated panel | #14 woodfast screws for plywood/OSB and dimensional lumber; #12 Tek screws for metal purlins. The guide specifies penetration through the bottom of plywood by 3/8 inch, or 1 inch into dimensional lumber. | Manufacturer guidance for S3 Metals’ panel; publication year not stated. S3 Metals installation guide. |
| Metal Panels Inc. 7/8-inch corrugated panel | 1-1/2-inch bonded washered wood screw, with fasteners at every purlin. | Preliminary manufacturer guide for its system, dated 2022 in the PDF filename; not a general specification. Metal Panels Inc. preliminary guide. |
These examples are not interchangeable recommendations. Check the guide for your panel, including the specified screw type, length, location and required engagement.

- Identify the panel. Find the manufacturer, profile and thickness, then locate that system’s installation guide or fastener schedule.
- Identify the support. Determine whether the roof is fastened to plywood or OSB, dimensional lumber, or metal purlins. The screw must suit the support material and, for metal, its thickness.
- Measure intervening layers. Include the panel and any insulation, spacer or other material between the panel and structural support. The screw must cross those layers and still achieve the specified penetration or thread engagement in the support.
- Apply the system’s penetration requirement. Do not select by nominal screw length alone. For timber purlins, New Zealand Metal Roofing Manufacturers Inc.’s code gives 30 mm as general penetration guidance; the panel system’s own engineered specification takes precedence. NZ Metal Roofing Manufacturers Inc. Code of Practice: Fasteners.
- Confirm the exact fastener. Match the screw designation, length and washer to the panel maker’s schedule and the actual support. If the guide does not resolve the support thickness or assembly, ask the panel or fastener manufacturer for a compatible specification before installation.
Choose a screw for the support material
Wood supports
Use the wood screw type specified for the panel and support. S3 Metals lists #14 woodfast screws for its 7/8-inch corrugated panel on plywood/OSB and dimensional lumber, with different penetration details for those supports: 3/8 inch through the bottom of plywood, or 1 inch into dimensional lumber. These figures belong to that manufacturer’s system, not every corrugated roof.

Metal purlins
Use a screw designed for the purlin material and thickness. S3 Metals lists #12 Tek screws for its panel on metal purlins, but that listing does not establish one universal screw length or engagement rule for every steel thickness. Confirm the complete fastener schedule for the actual panel and support rather than substituting a wood screw.
Install the washer without damaging the seal
Use the washer specified for the fastener and roof assembly, and drive the screw perpendicular to the panel. S3 Metals states, “All fasteners used for roof or wall applications should have EPDM sealing washers.” Seat the washer as the panel maker directs: underdriving can leave an inadequate seal, while overdriving can damage the washer or panel. Metal Panels Inc. warns that overdriving can dimple the panel, creating a place for water to collect and contributing to leaks. The New Zealand code also notes that resilient washers need a correct depth setting to seal properly.

Length is only one part of the fastening design
Fastener spacing and pattern must also match the panel maker’s instructions and applicable design requirements. S3 Metals says to fasten along each rib and at each purlin for its system. The New Zealand code says spacing should meet design loads and manufacturer recommendations. Wind loads, local building rules and the specific roof assembly may change what is required; do not infer a spacing pattern from screw length alone.

Before buying or installing screws
- Confirm the panel manufacturer, profile and thickness.
- Verify whether the support is wood or metal and determine its thickness.
- Account for insulation, spacers or other layers between panel and support.
- Check the specified screw type, length, penetration or engagement, washer and fastening pattern in the panel maker’s guide.
- Check applicable local requirements and design loads for the roof.
