The captain’s job is not to control every teammate or be the squad’s best player; it is to set a reliable example, help the group respond well under pressure and make room for others to lead.
What a soccer captain is—and is not—responsible for
The captain has a formal role, but limited authority. Under IFAB Law 3, section 3.10, in the 2025–26 edition, each team must have an identifiable captain on the field wearing an armband. The rule says the captain has no special status or privileges, though they bear a degree of responsibility for their team’s behaviour.

That distinction matters: the armband identifies a leader; it does not give its wearer power over the referee or teammates. A captain can influence the team through conduct, communication and trust, rather than relying on formal authority.

Qualities that show up in everyday team behavior
UEFA’s coaching guidance, “Ten characteristics of an effective leader”, published March 6, 2025 and updated March 25, 2025, describes broad leadership behaviors. Applied to a soccer captain, they offer practical signs to look for—not a legally required checklist or a scientific ranking.
#1 Best Overall
Put the team before recognition
A team-first captain remains approachable, shares credit and considers what the group needs rather than treating the role as a platform for personal status. Humility does not mean avoiding responsibility; it means using the role to serve the team.
Communicate clearly and listen
Good communication is concise and suited to the moment: a quick instruction during play, a calm conversation after a mistake, or a check-in with a teammate who seems uncertain. A captain should pay attention to whether the message has landed, ask questions when the situation is unclear and make space for teammates’ views instead of assuming what they think.

Stay composed and be honest constructively
Mistakes and disagreements are inevitable. A captain can help the team move forward by addressing problems calmly and focusing on what can improve, rather than assigning blame or escalating tension. Composure is not silence: it is the ability to be direct without making a difficult moment worse.
Make decisions, own them and learn
When a situation calls for action, a captain should identify what matters and respond decisively. They should also accept responsibility when they get something wrong, reflect on the outcome and adjust. Accountability makes a leader’s instructions more credible because the standard applies to the captain too.

Encourage teammates and build confidence
Motivation can be practical: recognize a teammate’s good contribution, offer encouragement when energy dips, or remind the group of what it can do. The point is not to deliver a speech after every setback, but to help teammates stay engaged and believe in one another.
Be authentic and consistent
A captain does not need to imitate a stereotypical “leader” persona. Teammates are more likely to trust conduct that reflects the captain’s real values and remains steady in both good and difficult moments. Reliability—not volume or theatrics—is the useful test.

Give others responsibility
A captain should help teammates develop judgment rather than take over every problem. Sharing responsibility builds other players’ confidence and keeps leadership from depending on a single voice.
Leadership can be shared across the squad
The captain need not excel at every form of leadership. FIFA Training Centre’s summary of Professor Katrien Fransen’s work, published June 29, 2023, distinguishes four athlete-leadership roles:

A coach can look at who already earns trust in each area and distribute responsibilities accordingly. The captain may be the main organizer while another teammate is especially effective at lifting morale or building team cohesion. FIFA’s summary describes benefits associated with shared leadership; it does not prescribe one ideal distribution for every squad.
How a captain should communicate with the referee
In UEFA competitions, guidance introduced in July 2024 gives captains an open, respectful channel to request explanations of key decisions, including VAR decisions. Captains are also asked to encourage teammates not to crowd or disrespect officials. If the captain is a goalkeeper, the team is asked to nominate an outfield player for this communication. This is UEFA competition guidance, not a universal rule for every match worldwide. The relevant announcement is UEFA’s July 5, 2024 notice, updated July 9, 2024.
How to choose a captain—or decide what leadership to share
Rather than selecting by reputation alone, a coach can compare candidates’ observable behavior and consider what the team needs. Useful questions include:

- Do teammates across the squad trust and listen to this player?
- Can they communicate clearly and stay composed when pressure rises?
- Do they take responsibility, including when they make a mistake?
- Can they encourage others and handle disagreements constructively?
- Which leadership roles—task, motivational, social or external—are already covered, and where would another teammate contribute?
These questions are a practical way to apply the leadership behaviors described by UEFA and the shared-role framework summarized by FIFA. Neither source sets a universal scoring system or says that one personality type is always best. Performance matters to a team, but it is not by itself proof that someone will lead well; the clearest evidence is how consistently they help the group function.
