The U.S. men’s national team head coach selects and announces the captain. Recent appointments show that the choice can change between tournaments and cycles, with leadership, experience and the ability to represent the team among the qualities the coach has cited. U.S. Soccer’s announcements do not describe a formal player vote or a published selection rule.
Who picks the USMNT captain?
The head coach is the public decision-maker. U.S. Soccer attributed both Tim Ream’s captaincy for the 2026 World Cup and Tyler Adams’s appointment for the new cycle to head coach Mauricio Pochettino.

What qualities does the coach look for?
Pochettino’s comments point to leadership beyond performance during a match. He praised Ream’s experience and capacity to lead, including his positive influence off the field. On Adams, he highlighted his role-model qualities and ability to communicate the team’s philosophy and culture.

These are the coach’s publicly stated reasons for the recent appointments, not a published checklist or binding rubric.

Why have the captain and armband changed?
Captaincy can be tied to a particular tournament or team cycle rather than one permanent appointment. Pochettino named Ream captain heading into the 2026 World Cup, then announced Adams as captain for the new cycle on October 3, 2026.

Does being captain guarantee a starting spot?
No. Pochettino explicitly said Ream’s World Cup captaincy did not guarantee that he would start. The role identifies a leader; it does not, by itself, determine the lineup.

Yes, at least during the period described in a 2021 account. Sports Illustrated reported that Berhalter’s team did not have one permanent captain then: teammates elected a six-player Leadership Council, and the matchday armband rotated among council members and alternates. That is historical context, not evidence of Pochettino’s current selection method.

Sports Illustrated’s 2021 report describes that earlier arrangement. U.S. Soccer’s recent announcements identify Pochettino as the person making the appointments, but do not explain whether or how players are consulted internally.
