Kodi is free, open-source media-center software: it organizes and plays digital media, but it does not provide a movie library, TV channels, or a streaming subscription. You can use it to browse and play files you own or are otherwise entitled to access, including media stored on a computer or home network. If you already have a compatible device, you can try Kodi without buying a new one.
What Kodi does—and what it doesn’t
Think of Kodi as a media player and library interface, not a content provider. It can organize a collection, display it in a television-friendly interface, and play supported media. You supply the files or configure access to a legitimate service.

Team Kodi puts the distinction plainly: “The official Kodi version does not contain any content whatsoever.” Installing Kodi does not unlock paid films, subscription catalogs, or live channels for free. Any internet service or add-on has its own availability, access requirements, and terms.

How add-ons fit in
Add-ons can extend Kodi with features such as music or video services, skins, program tools, and web interfaces. Kodi’s official add-on catalog includes extensions for different Kodi versions; the catalog reviewed identifies Kodi Omega (version 21) among its selections.

An add-on’s presence does not make its content part of Kodi or remove a service’s subscription requirements. Official catalog add-ons and extensions from third-party repositories also differ in origin and oversight. Team Kodi says third-party extensions are not produced, supported, or endorsed by it. Check what an add-on does, who provides it, and what access it requires before installing it.

Kodi’s legal explainer, published September 21, 2019, says the reference software supplied by Team Kodi is legal. It also says users are responsible for the media they provide and the add-ons they choose. That is general guidance, not a legal opinion for every country or a guarantee about every extension; local law and the source of the media matter. Read Kodi’s legal explainer for its distinction between the software and the content users access.

Be cautious if a seller or add-on promises normally paid media for free, unreleased films, or instant access through a preconfigured device. Kodi warns that third-party sources are not audited like its official repository, and unofficial builds can contain malware or break functionality. Use the official Kodi download area or a distribution source Kodi designates. Kodi also says it does not sell hardware or endorse one device over another; its software and hardware policy explains that position.

Start with hardware you already own. Kodi is available for multiple platforms, so a new streaming box or computer is not automatically necessary. A Raspberry Pi is one possible DIY route, but it is only one option and Kodi does not endorse a particular model or vendor.

If you do need a dedicated device, compare whether it runs a supported platform, handles the media formats you plan to play, connects to your storage and network, and is convenient to control. Check current prices and device-specific compatibility before purchasing; the cited Kodi pages do not identify a required device or accessory.
Kodi says it supports hundreds of remote controls and describes official phone remote apps. A compatible remote can make a setup easier to use, but it is not a universal requirement. Your media can be stored locally or on a home network; a particular storage product is not required by the information Kodi provides.

Set up Kodi around media you can access
- Choose an existing compatible device. Check Kodi’s official download page for the platform and use an official download or a distribution source it designates.
- Decide where your media lives. Use files on the device or storage accessible over your home network. Kodi organizes and plays media; it does not supply the files.
- Add a library or supported source. Organize local or network media in Kodi, or configure a service you are entitled to access. Any service’s own account, subscription, and terms still apply.
- Add extensions selectively. Prefer the official catalog when it meets your needs. For any third-party extension, verify its source and permissions and understand that Team Kodi does not endorse it.
- Set up convenient control if needed. Try a compatible remote or phone remote app if navigating with your device’s existing controls is awkward.
