Bright, sustained screen use and demanding activities such as navigation, streaming, gaming, hotspot use, and camera recording are common major battery drains. But there is no universal fastest-draining activity: your phone’s battery-usage screen is the best way to find what is using power on your device.
What drains a phone battery fastest?
A bright screen that stays on for a long time is a major everyday drain. Apple identifies high screen brightness as energy-consuming, while Google advises limiting prolonged navigation, video, and graphics-heavy games when conserving charge. Neither provides a cross-phone ranking or a percentage that would make one activity the universal leader.

Many high-drain activities combine screen use, processing, and connectivity. Navigation can keep the display active while using location services; streaming and games may demand sustained network or graphics work; a hotspot keeps a wireless connection available for other devices. Camera use can also consume power quickly.

These are common patterns, not a guaranteed ranking for every model or situation. A short burst of a demanding task may use less battery than hours of a bright screen, and a phone’s signal, settings, battery condition, and background work all affect the result.

Why can battery drain when you are not using the phone?
Background activity and notifications
An app does not have to be visible to use power. Apple describes background activity such as directions, music playback, photo syncing, and mail fetching. Notifications can also wake the device. In the iPhone battery view, app and system activity can be examined alongside time spent on screen and in the background.
Weak cellular coverage
When service is weak or unavailable, a phone may spend energy searching for a signal. Apple identifies low-signal conditions as a battery-life factor. Use Wi-Fi when it is available and appropriate; if the phone will be without cellular coverage for a while, Airplane Mode can prevent continued searching. Keep in mind that Airplane Mode disables wireless connections until you turn them back on.

Heat and battery condition
Heat is different from an app-specific drain: Google warns that a hot device can lose charge faster even while idle, and that heat can damage the battery. If the phone remains hot, reduce demanding use and move it away from hot surroundings.

A battery that has aged or developed a fault may also hold less charge, but one unusually draining day does not establish battery failure. On iPhone, check Battery Health; if the phone indicates that service may be needed, Apple recommends considering replacement through Apple or an authorized service provider.

How to find what is using your battery
On iPhone
- Open Settings → Battery.
- Review the usage chart and the app and system activity list. Apple’s Daily Usage view compares the current day with recent days, while App and System Activity Usage shows which apps and system tasks used battery.
- Tap an app or activity to inspect its on-screen and background time. Look for patterns such as unusually long background activity, low-coverage indications, or notifications waking the device.
Menu wording and feature availability vary by iOS version. Apple’s current guidance describes iOS 26 requirements for features including the Daily Usage chart and Adaptive Power.
On Android
- Open your device’s Settings and find Battery or Battery usage. The exact labels and controls depend on the manufacturer and Android version.
- Check which apps or system activities used the most power during the period shown. Consider whether a high-use app was open for a long time or remained active in the background.
- If an app’s use seems unexpectedly high, use the available battery settings to restrict its background activity, or use Battery Saver. Some Google instructions apply only to Android 13 and later, and options differ by device.
- If the problem persists, restart the phone and install available system and app updates.
How to interpret the battery-usage results
Do not treat the top app in a single snapshot as proof that it is malfunctioning. An app used on screen for a long time can naturally appear high in the list. Compare the period shown, screen-on time, background activity, and signal conditions across more than one day if the pattern is unclear.

- High on-screen time: Consider how long the display was active and whether brightness was high.
- High background time: Check whether the app was syncing, fetching information, playing audio, or providing directions when not visible.
- Low coverage: Consider whether the phone spent time in a weak-signal area.
- Unexpected heat: Treat it as a device-condition issue as well as a possible sign of demanding activity; heat can accelerate drain even at idle.
What to change first
- Lower screen brightness or shorten the time the screen stays on when you do not need it bright.
- Limit prolonged navigation, video, and graphics-heavy gaming when conserving charge.
- Use Wi-Fi where appropriate, and avoid leaving a hotspot active when it is not needed.
- Review apps with substantial background use and restrict only those whose background activity you do not need. Turning off location or notifications broadly can disrupt useful features, so adjust them selectively.
- Use Battery Saver when you need to extend runtime, but note that power-saving modes may delay features or network activity.
