Keyframing lets you change a property of a video or audio clip over time. Set a property—such as position, scale, opacity, an effect parameter, or volume—to chosen values at specific moments, and the editor calculates the values between them. Use it when a change needs to happen during a clip, rather than remain constant.
How keyframing works
A keyframe records a property’s value at a particular time. For a basic animation, set one keyframe where the change begins and another where it ends. For example, give a clip one position at the start and a different position later; the editor calculates the intervening positions so the clip moves across the frame.

This calculation between keyframes is called interpolation. Adobe describes animation as changing a property’s value over time, while Apple’s Final Cut Pro guide explains that the application calculates values between the set points. The same principle applies whether the property is visual or audio-related.
When to use keyframes
Use keyframes when a property needs to change at particular times within a clip. Typical uses include:

- Move or scale a shot: Set position or scale values at different times to create motion or a changing zoom.
- Fade visibility: Change opacity over time to make a clip appear or disappear gradually.
- Animate an effect: Adjust an effect parameter at selected moments instead of applying one fixed value throughout.
- Shape audio volume: Set volume values at different times to create a gradual level change.
- Adjust transitions or motion paths: In editors that support it, keyframe transition properties or define a path for an element to follow.
If a property should stay the same for the entire clip, keyframes do not create a useful change on their own. For a simple change, a start and end point establish the animation; add more points only when you need to shape what happens between them. The right number depends on the change you want.
Where keyframe controls appear in Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro
| Editor | Documented controls or view | Examples of what can be animated |
|---|---|---|
| Adobe Premiere Pro | Effect Controls and Timeline panels | Position, opacity, audio volume, and effect properties |
| Apple Final Cut Pro | Video Animation editor | Video and audio effects, individual effect parameters, clip properties, transitions, and motion paths |
These are examples of how two editors expose keyframing, not a ranking of their usability or capabilities. Available controls vary by editor and by the property or effect you are editing. Adobe’s Premiere keyframes overview was last updated January 7, 2026. Apple documents the feature in its Final Cut Pro guide for version 12.4 on Mac 26.6.

Keyframes for everyday editors versus developers
For ordinary editing, think in terms of choosing a property, setting its value at the relevant moments, and letting the editor interpolate the change. Apple’s developer documentation describes the same time-and-value model in XML, including an example that animates position and scale from 0 to 10 seconds. That span is illustrative developer documentation, not a required duration or workflow for editing a clip.

If so, keyframes give you a way to specify those moments and let the editor fill in the movement or adjustment between them.
