YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Its published encoder guidance gives no separate interval for continuous streams, so the same recommendation applies.
Set the interval to 2 seconds
In your encoder, find the keyframe interval or keyframe frequency setting and enter 2 if the field is measured in seconds. YouTube lists 2 seconds as recommended and 4 seconds as the maximum in its live encoder settings guidance.

The interval describes the time between keyframes in the encoded video. It is not a bitrate setting: YouTube’s bitrate recommendations depend on the selected codec, resolution and frame rate.
If your encoder asks for frames
Convert the two-second interval to a frame count by multiplying the frame rate by two:

- 30 fps: 60 frames.
- 60 fps: 120 frames.
These are conversions of YouTube’s two-second recommendation, not separate frame-count values published by YouTube. YouTube’s encoder guidance supports frame rates up to 60 fps.
Keep the interval consistent and test before going live
Use the same interval throughout the stream. OBS says a consistent keyframe interval within the platform’s recommendation can help viewers switch smoothly between quality options; its guidance is dated June 9, 2021 (OBS: Transcodes / Transcoding).

Before starting a long broadcast, test with a stream resembling the one you intend to run. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health and any encoder messages during the event. The recommendation is the same for a 24/7 stream; YouTube’s published page does not specify a continuous-stream exception.

The keyframe interval is only one part of the setup. YouTube’s encoder guidance also covers RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. Select bitrate for your codec, resolution and frame rate rather than changing it to compensate for the keyframe interval. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for the relevant bitrate recommendations.

Why not use another platform’s interval guidance?
Streaming platforms can publish different guidance for their own services. For example, Cloudflare’s live-stream troubleshooting page describes a 2-to-8-second range for Cloudflare Stream and explains that shorter intervals can use more broadcast-side bandwidth and reduce latency, while longer intervals can reduce bandwidth and may increase latency. That is Cloudflare-specific guidance, not a reason to override YouTube’s 2-second recommendation (Cloudflare, last updated July 30, 2026).
