If a cookie banner covers the page in a Puppeteer screenshot, first decide whether you are testing a real consent choice or capturing the underlying layout. For a consent test, interact with the banner as a visitor would and wait for it to close. For a visual-only capture, use a fresh browser context and hide only the verified banner element immediately before taking the screenshot. Hiding it changes the image; it does not grant consent.
Choose the right fix for the job
| What you are testing | What to do | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
| A real visitor consent flow | Keep the banner visible, click the intended accept or reject control, then wait for the banner to close. | The page reflects the consent action made by the automation. |
| The page layout beneath the banner | Use a narrow, temporary visual override on the verified banner element before capture. | The screenshot omits the banner, but no consent choice has been made. |
Do not present a visual-cleanup screenshot as evidence that the site accepted or recorded consent. Keep layout captures and consent-flow tests as separate runs.
Make the browser state repeatable
Cookie banners may appear inconsistently because an earlier run saved consent in cookies or local storage. Create a fresh BrowserContext for a clean run: Puppeteer documents that separate contexts do not share cookies or local storage. A clean context can therefore make the banner appear again, which is expected when that context has no saved consent. See Puppeteer’s browser management guide.
Do not rely on a fresh context if the scenario specifically requires returning-user state. In that case, deliberately use the intended persisted browser state and make it part of the test setup.

Inspect the banner before changing the page
There is no universal Puppeteer switch or selector for removing cookie banners. The banner may belong to a consent manager, sit inside an iframe, or be rendered in a shadow root. Inspect the target page and identify the actual implementation before choosing a selector or consent action. Without a specific target site, no reliable selector or button can be prescribed.
- For a real consent journey, locate and use the intended consent control.
- For visual cleanup, identify the precise banner element and change only that element.
- If a selector does not match, check whether the banner is inside an iframe or shadow DOM rather than broadening the selector to hide unrelated page content.
Hide a verified banner for a visual-only capture
The following pattern injects temporary CSS before capture. Replace the illustrative selector with one confirmed on the page; the bracketed example is not a real selector and will not work as-is.
await page.goto(url);
// Replace with a selector verified on the target page.
const bannerSelector = '[site-specific-cookie-banner]';
await page.waitForSelector(bannerSelector);
await page.addStyleTag({
content: `${bannerSelector} { display: none !important; }`,
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' });
If the banner is absent in a particular run, waitForSelector will not complete. Decide whether absence is valid for the test; if so, use an appropriate timeout and handle that case explicitly rather than silently treating a missing banner as a successful consent action. Puppeteer’s Page API documents screenshot and page capabilities such as adding a script tag; the injected-style pattern above is an implementation technique, not a built-in cookie-banner feature. The same API reference notes that page-level cookie methods are deprecated in favor of Browser or BrowserContext cookie APIs.

For a consent test, wait for the real banner and activate the control that matches the scenario—such as accept or reject—using the target site’s actual selector. Then wait for the banner to disappear or for the next expected page state before calling page.screenshot(). The selector and interaction must come from inspecting the site under test; do not substitute CSS hiding for a consent action.
Puppeteer screenshots capture the rendered page, so a banner still present at capture time will appear in the image. See the Page API.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single GET request can return a screenshot or PDF; its clean-shot behavior accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot"
-d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY
--data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com
-o shot.webp
Replace the URL with the page to capture and use your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options and response details. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Troubleshoot common failures
The banner still appears
- Confirm the selector matches the visible banner on the loaded page.
- Check whether the banner is inside an iframe or shadow root; a selector in the top-level document may not reach it.
- Ensure the style is injected after the element exists and before the screenshot is captured.
- For a consent test, verify that the automation clicked the intended control and waited for the resulting state instead of merely hiding the element.
The banner appears in one run but not another
Check whether the runs use different cookies or local storage. A prior consent state can suppress the banner; a fresh BrowserContext isolates that state and may make it appear again. Match the context setup to the visitor scenario being tested.
The wait never completes
A selector wait will not finish if the selector is wrong or the banner is not present. Inspect the rendered page and determine whether the banner is genuinely expected. Handle an optional banner explicitly instead of treating a timeout as proof that consent succeeded.
An extension-based approach behaves differently in headless mode
Puppeteer runs headless by default, according to its project overview. One documented extension-based consent setup required headful mode, but that observation applies to that setup and does not establish that all extensions require a visible browser. Verify the extension and browser mode you actually use rather than assuming general compatibility.

Reliability and cost considerations
- Use a new BrowserContext when you need isolated, repeatable consent state; use deliberate persisted state when testing a returning visitor.
- Prefer an explicit consent interaction for behavior tests. A targeted CSS override is appropriate only when the goal is a clean layout image.
- Keep the selector specific. A broad rule risks hiding real page content alongside the banner.
- Puppeteer has no documented universal banner-removal option, so the implementation depends on the page’s consent setup.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does hiding the cookie banner save or accept consent?
No. Hiding the element changes what is rendered in the screenshot; it is not a consent action.
Why does a fresh BrowserContext make the banner appear again?
BrowserContexts do not share cookies or local storage, so a new context may not contain the consent state saved by an earlier run.
