A call going straight to voicemail is a symptom, not proof that the recipient rejected it or that the phone is broken. A phone may silence or screen certain callers, block a number, forward calls, lack usable service, or be affected by a carrier or account issue. Start by checking whether it happens with every caller or only particular numbers, then check call settings and connectivity.
First, identify which calls are affected
Try to establish whether all incoming calls go to voicemail or only calls from unknown, private, or specific numbers. If only certain callers are affected, check call screening, unknown-caller settings, spam filters, and blocked-number lists first. If calls from everyone are affected, include Focus or Do Not Disturb, forwarding, reception, and carrier service in your checks.

Look for clues such as whether the call appears in Recents or a filtered-call list, whether the phone shows “No Service” or “Searching,” and whether calls work in another location. These clues help narrow down the layer involved; none alone proves why a call was not answered.
Check iPhone call settings
On iPhone, review the settings that can silence, screen, block, or redirect incoming calls. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance for calls that go to voicemail recommends checking Silent mode, active Focus modes such as Do Not Disturb, Sleep, or Work, and relevant Phone settings. Menu names and availability can differ by software version and region; if a label is not where expected, search for it in Settings.

- Silent mode and Focus: Turn Silent mode off and check whether a Focus mode is active or scheduled. A Focus mode can limit interruptions, including calls.
- Unknown callers: Review Screen Unknown Callers or Silence Unknown Callers. With Apple’s Silence option, “Calls from unsaved numbers will be silenced, sent to voicemail, and appear in the Recents list.” See the iPhone guide to handling unknown callers.
- Call Filtering and blocked contacts: Check Phone settings for filtering options and review the blocked contacts list for the number in question.
- Call Forwarding: Check whether forwarding is enabled if calls are being routed elsewhere or not reaching the phone as expected.
- Wi-Fi Calling: Check whether it is available and enabled if cellular reception is poor. It only helps when supported by the carrier and properly configured.
If the issue remains, Apple also recommends toggling Airplane Mode, testing in another location, and checking for carrier settings and iOS updates. Resetting network settings is a later option, not a first step: it removes saved network settings, including Wi-Fi passwords and VPN/APN settings. Follow Apple’s steps for troubleshooting iPhone call problems and test after each change.
Check Android modes and blocked numbers
Android settings vary by phone maker and software version. As Google notes, “Settings can vary by phone. For more info, contact your device manufacturer.” Start with Quick Settings or the device’s Settings app and check Do Not Disturb or Modes. Review which callers are allowed, whether calls are blocked, and whether a schedule is turning a mode back on. Google explains these controls in its guide to Do Not Disturb and other Android modes.

If the device uses Phone by Google, open the Phone app’s settings and review blocked numbers. Google says calls from a blocked number are automatically declined. Its “Unknown” blocking setting targets private or unidentified numbers; it does not block every number that is simply missing from your contacts. See Google Phone’s instructions for blocking or unblocking numbers. Other Android dialer apps may have different controls.

If calls go to Google Voice
If the affected number is handled by Google Voice rather than the phone’s standard carrier dialer, also check the Voice app’s selected devices for receiving calls and its own Do Not Disturb setting. This is specific to Google Voice; it is not a general explanation for calls to every Android phone. Google’s Voice help for forwarding calls to linked numbers covers its receiving-device options.

Check reception, Wi-Fi Calling, and carrier handling
If all callers are affected, the phone shows a service warning, or changing call settings does not help, test in a place with reliable cellular reception. Then contact the carrier to ask about a local outage, account provisioning or restrictions, billing-related blocks, and call-routing errors recorded on its system. Apple’s iPhone guidance for cellular connection and call problems recommends checking with the provider about these network and account conditions.
Wi-Fi Calling may help when cellular coverage is weak, but it is not guaranteed to be available: the carrier and device must support it, and it must be configured. Google advises checking with the provider because not all carriers support the feature; Apple notes that the option may not appear if the provider does not offer it. The number of rings before voicemail may be controlled by the carrier rather than the phone. Google says many carriers let customers change the ring duration or number of rings before voicemail; ask your carrier whether it offers that control. Details are in Google Phone’s call and voicemail help.

Make one change at a time and test again. That makes it easier to tell which setting or service condition changed the result.
