Moving an eligible app to an SD card can free some space in a phone’s internal storage, but it may not move the app’s entire data footprint. Whether you can do it depends on the phone’s storage mode and the app’s support for external installation. A card set up as portable storage holds files, not apps; app installation requires internal (adoptable) storage on a device that supports it.
What actually moves when you move an app?
The phone shifts some app components from internal storage to the card. Some app data may remain in internal storage, so the space recovered is partial and varies by app and device. Samsung specifically notes that some movable apps still leave data in internal storage: Samsung Support UK’s SD-card guidance.

Moving an app is therefore not a guarantee that its full storage use will disappear from the phone. It also does not make every app movable: both the device and the app must permit external installation.
Portable storage versus internal (adoptable) storage
Google Android Help explains that an SD card can be set up as portable storage or internal storage. The choice determines whether the card is meant for files that can travel between devices or can also be used for apps. Formatting erases the card’s existing contents.
#1 Best Overall
- EXPAND YOUR STORAGE. Insert your card to add massive storage up to 1.5TB[1] to your Android smartphones and tablets, digital cameras, and laptops.
- SPACE FOR MORE. With expansive capacities up to 1.5TB[1], capture and store hours of Full HD video[4], movies, music, games, photos, and podcasts.
- MOVE FILES FAST. Use your card with the SANDISK QuickFlow microSD UHS-I Card USB-A Reader[6] to achieve up to 195MB/s[2] read speeds [128GB-1.5TB models] and offload your content fast.
- LOAD APPS IN A SNAP. Rated A1[3], the SANDISK Ultra microSD card is optimized for faster app launch and overall app performance.
- EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].
| Mode | Can store apps? | Transfer between devices? | Formatting and device support |
|---|---|---|---|
| Portable storage | No. It is for files such as photos and videos. | Yes, as portable media, when the other device is compatible. | Set up the card for portable use; it is not the app-installation mode. |
| Internal (adoptable) storage | Yes, if the device supports adoption and the app allows external installation. | Not like a portable card. It is configured for the adopting device. | Formatting deletes existing data. Android adoption formats and encrypts the card. |
These distinctions come from Google Android Help and the Android Open Source Project’s adoptable-storage documentation. Adoptable storage is an Android platform capability, not proof that a particular phone offers it. Samsung says its Android devices do not support Adoptable storage, even though some Galaxy models provide a way to move eligible apps to an SD card.
Why an app may not have a move option
There are two separate eligibility checks: the phone must expose a supported method, and the app developer must allow external installation. Android’s app-installation guidance says this depends on the app’s android:installLocation setting. If the developer does not permit external installation, the phone cannot make that app movable through its normal settings.

- Expand your storage in a flash: ideal for Android smartphones and tablets, Chromebooks, and Windows laptops.
- Up to 140MB/s transfer speeds to move up to 1000 photos per minute
- Load apps faster with A1-rated performance
- View, access, and back up your phone’s files in one location with the SanDisk Memory Zone app
- Relax knowing your card is backed by a 10-year limited warranty by SanDisk
- The phone does not support app movement: Some devices omit the feature or the relevant setting.
- The app is not eligible: Developers can restrict external installation; Samsung also says many apps are ineligible for its documented workflow.
- The app was preloaded: Samsung says preloaded apps cannot be moved using its documented method.
- Performance or reliability concerns apply: Samsung notes that eligibility can reflect performance considerations.
See Android Developers’ app install location guide and Samsung Support US’s Galaxy SD-card guidance. If the move control is absent, there is no move action for that app through that device’s documented interface.

How to move an eligible app on a supported Galaxy device
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then select the app.
- Tap Storage.
- If Change appears, tap it, choose SD card, then tap Move.
This is Samsung’s documented route; available screens and settings vary by Galaxy model, software version, and service provider. Samsung also cautions that some app data can remain in internal storage. The instructions do not apply to every Android phone.

What happens if you remove the card?
A portable card is designed to be moved between compatible devices for file access. Adopted storage is different: it is formatted and encrypted for the phone that adopted it, so do not treat it as a plug-and-play archive that can be freely moved to another device.
Android’s developer guidance warns that unmounting external storage immediately kills apps running from it. Avoid removing or unmounting a card that holds apps while those apps are in use; consult your phone’s instructions before changing the card’s setup. The Android platform details are in the adoptable-storage documentation and app install location guide.

Before formatting or choosing a card
- Back up files on the card first. Formatting erases its contents.
- Check the exact phone or tablet model’s documentation to confirm it has a card slot and supports the storage mode you intend to use.
- Choose portable storage if your goal is to carry files between compatible devices; do not expect it to install apps.
- Choose internal/adoptable storage for apps only if the device offers that mode and you accept that the card will be configured for that device.
Google’s setup guidance covers the portable and internal choices and warns that formatting permanently deletes data: Get started with an SD card.
