The phrase has two common meanings: loading code as a module, or reading data into an application such as a table or workspace. The exact steps depend on the software, the file type, and what you want to do with its contents.
What does importing a file mean?
Importing is not one universal operation. In programming, it usually makes code from another module available to a program. In a data application, it reads an external file and converts its contents into a structure the application can work with.

What happens when you import code?
A programming language’s runtime follows its own module-loading rules; importing code is not simply copying a file into a document. Python’s language reference explains that importing is the usual way for code in one module to access code in another: Python 3.14.8: The import system. The import system searches for a module and binds it to a name.

The Wellesley College CS111 glossary notes that a Python file’s code runs when it is imported, making its definitions available through the module: CS111 glossary. That means code at the module’s top level may have effects at import time.

JavaScript has static and dynamic imports
JavaScript static imports are evaluated when a module is loaded. Dynamic import() loads an ECMAScript module asynchronously and on demand; when loading and evaluation succeed, it resolves to a module namespace object. If loading or evaluation fails, the returned promise is rejected. MDN describes dynamic import as useful for conditional or on-demand loading, constructed module specifiers, and use from a non-module environment. Static imports, in contrast, can support static analysis and tree shaking. See MDN’s JavaScript import() reference.
What happens when you import data?
A data import reads a file and translates its contents into something the application can use, often a table. For example, JMP 19.2 documentation says JMP converts supported non-JMP files, including Excel and text files, into data tables. Its listed examples include Excel, text, CSV, JSL, DAT, TSV, and JRN; recognition can depend on the operating system and file extension. The application may need instructions about how to interpret and place the contents. Alpha Anywhere’s import guide describes choosing a file type, configuring field names, selecting a destination table, setting delimiters or record structure, and deciding how to handle duplicate records. - Choose the application’s import or open command and select a supported file.
- Confirm how the application should interpret the contents, such as field names, separators, or record layout.
- Choose where the imported content should go, if the application asks for a destination.
- Inspect the result for missing, shifted, or incorrectly parsed values.

To get steps that match your task, identify the software or programming language, the file type, and the result you want—for example, loading code for a Python program or bringing CSV records into a spreadsheet. A data-import wizard and a programming-language module import solve different problems, so one cannot substitute for the other.
