JEDEC originally stood for the Joint Electron Device Engineering Council. It develops open standards and publications for the microelectronics industry. The expansion uses “Electron,” not “Electronic,” despite the wording in this article’s original title.

What does JEDEC stand for?

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission spells out JEDEC as the Joint Electron Device Engineering Council. The title phrase “Joint Electronic Device Engineering Council” differs by one word; the government filing uses “Electron.”

What does JEDEC do?

JEDEC develops open standards and publications for the microelectronics industry. Its work helps define technical requirements and practices; JEDEC is the standards organization, not a manufacturer of memory products. A particular requirement belongs to the relevant standard or publication, and not every JEDEC document applies to every device.

Technology areas

JEDEC lists focus areas including main memory, flash memory, low-power memory, memory module design file registrations, electrostatic discharge (ESD), and wide-bandgap power semiconductors.

Where can you find a specific JEDEC requirement?

Use JEDEC’s standards and publications search to find relevant documents. Check that a document’s technical scope and revision apply to the component or system in question; the acronym alone does not identify which requirement governs a design.

A brief history of JEDEC

A U.S. Federal Trade Commission filing states that JEDEC was a division of the Electronic Industries Alliance until 2000, when it was separately incorporated as a nonprofit, non-stock corporation. That describes its historical transition, not its current legal structure.
