What Is Xona’s Pulsar GPS Alternative? How It Differs From GPS in 2026

Xona Pulsar is a planned low Earth orbit PNT service designed to complement GPS. Here is how its orbit, claimed accuracy, signal strength, authentication, receiver compatibility and 2026 deployment status differ from GPS.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Xona’s GPS alternative is Pulsar, a planned low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite service for positioning, navigation and timing (PNT). GPS is an established medium Earth orbit (MEO) global navigation satellite system (GNSS). Pulsar is designed to add an independent signal alongside GPS and other GNSS networks, not to make existing GPS receivers or satellites obsolete.

The important differences are the satellites’ orbits, the resulting signal geometry and power, the planned use of cryptographic authentication, and Pulsar’s current availability. Xona publishes centimeter-level specifications and a constellation plan of about 300 satellites, but as of October 2026 Pulsar-0 testing and regulatory authorization do not demonstrate a completed, globally available service.

What is Xona Pulsar?

Xona describes Pulsar as its “Low Earth Orbit satellite constellation providing next-generation positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) services.” In practical terms, it is intended to provide a satellite-derived source of position, navigation and precise time that equipment can use with, or in some cases alongside, established GNSS signals.

GPS supplies the best-known GNSS service. Its satellites operate in medium Earth orbit and broadcast signals that compatible receivers use to calculate location and time. Pulsar changes the satellite layer rather than the basic purpose: it is another space-based PNT source, designed around LEO satellites and an independent signal.

Xona’s official description says Pulsar is intended to work without interfering with existing GNSS. That is a company claim about the signal design, not proof that every receiver, antenna or installation will support it automatically.

The fundamental difference: LEO versus MEO

GPS satellites in medium Earth orbit

GPS is a mature GNSS constellation built around MEO satellites. A receiver normally combines timing and ranging information from several satellites to solve for its position and clock offset. The system has an established worldwide user ecosystem, including mass-market phones, vehicles, surveying equipment and infrastructure timing installations.

Pulsar satellites in low Earth orbit

Pulsar is planned around LEO satellites, which orbit substantially closer to Earth than GPS satellites. Xona says that shorter distance gives Pulsar stronger received signals. The satellites also move across the sky more quickly from a user’s perspective, changing the geometry of the observations faster and potentially allowing a receiver to reach a useful solution more quickly after startup or interruption. Xona refers to that benefit as faster convergence.

Those are architectural advantages, not guarantees of a particular result on every device. Antenna quality, receiver firmware, obstructions, multipath, local interference and the number and geometry of visible satellites still affect the position solution.

Comparison point GPS Xona Pulsar
Orbit Medium Earth orbit (MEO) Low Earth orbit (LEO)
Role Established GNSS providing global positioning, navigation and timing Planned independent PNT service intended to complement GNSS
Service status in 2026 Operational and widely deployed Pulsar-0 validation and testing; larger constellation planned
Signal-power comparison GPS L1 C/A is the reference used in Xona’s published comparison Xona states up to -136 dBW, described by the company as 100 times GPS L1 C/A
Published positioning specification No GPS comparison figure is established in the supplied evidence Xona states 2 cm horizontal and 4 cm vertical positioning
Authentication Not comprehensively compared in the available evidence Xona says Pulsar includes cryptographic signal authentication
Receiver situation Large, mature GNSS receiver ecosystem L1/L5-capable hardware may work when firmware supports Pulsar; compatibility is model-specific

What performance does Xona claim?

Xona’s current Pulsar specifications, accessed in 2026, list three figures that attract the most attention:

Specification Xona’s stated value How to interpret it
Positioning 2 cm horizontal by 4 cm vertical A company specification, not an independently measured result for every user, receiver or environment
Timing Below 10 nanoseconds A stated timing target or capability; actual results depend on equipment, signal conditions and service configuration
Signal power Up to -136 dBW Xona describes this as 100 times the power of GPS L1 C/A; the comparison is attributed to Xona

“Centimeter-level” does not mean a phone will automatically show a two-centimeter position. High-precision results generally depend on the receiver’s measurement technology, antenna installation, correction data and operating environment. The figures above should therefore be read as published Pulsar specifications rather than universal consumer outcomes.

Is Pulsar available now?

Not as a completed global constellation. Xona says signals from Pulsar-0 are being received and tested across regions of the United States and Canada, while full constellation service is planned over the next few years.

Pulsar-0 reception reports

Furuno reported live reception of a Pulsar-0 signal in Nishinomiya, Japan in June 2026. In July 2026, the company reported reception during a GNSS spoofing test. The report demonstrates that the test equipment received Pulsar in that location and scenario; it does not establish worldwide coverage or continuous commercial service.

Planned constellation size

Xona’s current Pulsar page describes an approximately 300-satellite constellation. An Institute of Navigation study published in the 2025 ION GNSS+ proceedings used a “near 260-satellite” constellation in its study context. Those figures refer to different planning or study snapshots. The approximately 300 figure is the current company plan cited for 2026, not a count of satellites already in orbit.

Regulatory milestone

Xona’s newsroom lists August 3, 2026 FCC authorization for full deployment. FCC authorization allows a deployment; it does not mean that the planned satellites have all been launched, that coverage is global, or that a consumer service is open everywhere.

How Pulsar signals relate to existing GNSS equipment

L1 and L5 bands

Pulsar’s signal design uses L1 and L5 bands, which are familiar frequency bands in the GNSS hardware ecosystem. That creates a path for compatibility with some existing equipment, but sharing a frequency band does not make a device Pulsar-ready. The receiver must know how to search for, decode and use Pulsar’s signal format, and its firmware must expose that capability.

What compatibility testing has shown

The Institute of Navigation’s “Xona Pulsar Compatibility with GNSS” abstract describes evaluations using commercial GNSS receiver hardware. Some evaluations involved firmware modifications. The authors reported no adverse interference under the conditions they evaluated.

Furuno likewise described a commercial GNSS antenna and a commercial receiver evaluation unit with limited firmware modifications. Its release did not identify a named retail receiver model that readers can purchase and assume will work with Pulsar.

What this means for a receiver owner

Do not infer compatibility from a product being called “GPS,” “GNSS,” dual-frequency or L1/L5-capable. Those labels describe broad capabilities, not Pulsar support. A receiver vendor would need to identify Pulsar support explicitly, document the required firmware, and state whether the device can track Pulsar alone or only combine it with other GNSS sources.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to check whether equipment could support Pulsar

  1. Identify the exact receiver and firmware. Record the manufacturer’s model number, hardware revision and installed firmware. Compatibility can vary between revisions of what appears to be the same product family.
  2. Check the vendor’s current documentation. Look for an explicit Pulsar or LEO-PNT support statement, not just references to GPS, GNSS, L1 or L5.
  3. Confirm the antenna and RF front end. The antenna, cabling and receiver front end must cover the supported bands and signal characteristics. A receiver update cannot overcome incompatible RF hardware.
  4. Ask how the signal is used. Determine whether the firmware can produce a Pulsar-only solution, combine Pulsar with GPS and other GNSS, or merely record raw measurements for post-processing.
  5. Verify the service region and test conditions. Pulsar-0 demonstrations are location- and date-specific. A successful test in Japan, the United States or Canada is not evidence of availability at another site.
  6. Require an observable result. A credible integration document should explain how the receiver reports tracked Pulsar signals, solution status, authentication status and any fall-back to other GNSS sources.

Does Pulsar replace GPS?

No. Pulsar is designed as a complement to GPS and other GNSS systems. Xona’s architecture uses an independent signal so a receiver can gain another PNT source rather than rely on one constellation. In a combined design, GPS can provide established availability while Pulsar adds a different orbital geometry, a potentially stronger signal and another source of timing and ranging data.

A replacement would require Pulsar to offer equivalent coverage, receiver availability, operational continuity and service access for the particular application. The current evidence does not establish those conditions. The planned constellation is not yet the same thing as an operating global network, and no broad consumer hardware certification list is identified.

Why a second constellation matters

Using more than one independent satellite system can give a receiver more observations and more varied geometry. That may help when buildings, terrain or other obstructions block part of the sky. A separate signal can also give an operator another source to compare when one system’s data appears inconsistent.

Authentication, jamming and spoofing

Cryptographic authentication

Xona says Pulsar includes cryptographic signal authentication. Authentication is intended to help a receiver determine whether navigation data came from an authorized source rather than accepting a convincing but false signal. It addresses trust in the signal’s origin; it does not remove every cause of positioning error.

What the Furuno test demonstrated

Furuno reported receiving Pulsar during a test in which spoofing signals targeted GNSS. That is evidence of reception in a particular spoofing environment. The spoofing signals in that test were aimed at GNSS and did not specifically target Pulsar.

Consequently, the result should not be described as proof that Pulsar cannot be spoofed or jammed. A determined adversary could target different frequencies, hardware or locations. Xona’s “state of the art protection against spoofing and jamming” wording is a company claim about the design goal and protection features, not an immunity guarantee.

Operational interpretation

For critical systems, the sensible approach is layered monitoring: compare independent PNT sources, watch receiver integrity and authentication indicators, and define what the system should do when signals disagree or disappear. Pulsar may become one layer in that design, but the cited evidence does not establish a complete resilience architecture for any particular industry.

What could Pulsar be used for?

PNT services support many kinds of equipment, from navigation systems to infrastructure that needs a common time reference. Furuno says LEO PNT can serve as an alternative or complementary source when GNSS is affected by jamming, disruption or spoofing, potentially contributing to continuity for critical infrastructure.

That statement describes potential operational value rather than a list of currently available Pulsar products. Possible future integration areas include:

  • High-precision positioning: applications that can use centimeter-level specifications when the receiver, antenna, corrections and environment support them.
  • Timing-dependent infrastructure: systems that need a precise time reference and can validate it against another source.
  • Autonomous and robotic systems: platforms that benefit from additional satellite geometry and a fallback PNT path.
  • Surveying and industrial automation: professional equipment where firmware and antenna integration can be managed by the supplier.
  • Resilience engineering: installations that need to detect or tolerate a degraded GNSS signal rather than assume one constellation is always trustworthy.

None of these categories proves that a ready-to-buy Pulsar service or certified receiver is available to consumers today. Availability, pricing, service terms and partner hardware must be confirmed directly when products are announced.

What remains uncertain

Several practical questions cannot be answered from the current evidence:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Global availability: the planned constellation and Pulsar-0 tests do not establish continuous worldwide coverage.
  • Consumer hardware: no named retail receiver is verified as Pulsar-ready in the cited material.
  • Independent performance: there is no published, like-for-like independent test establishing the advertised accuracy or signal-power comparison across ordinary user environments.
  • Service model: the evidence does not establish public signup, pricing, subscription terms or a consumer access program.
  • Real-world resilience: a bounded spoofing test does not characterize performance against every jammer, spoofer, obstruction or interference source.
  • Deployment schedule: FCC authorization and a constellation plan are milestones, not launch dates for every satellite or region.

These limitations do not invalidate Pulsar’s technical concept. They define the difference between a promising LEO-PNT architecture, an evaluated test signal and a mature service that an ordinary buyer can depend on.

How to read future Pulsar announcements

When Xona or a receiver vendor publishes a new milestone, separate four questions that are often blended together:

  1. Was a signal transmitted? A satellite test can answer this for a particular date and location.
  2. Was it received and decoded? This establishes more than transmission, but still may involve specialized equipment or firmware.
  3. Was a useful position or time solution produced? The announcement should state accuracy, timing, test conditions and whether corrections were used.
  4. Is the service operational at the reader’s location? Only coverage, service status and compatible equipment documentation can answer that.

Applying those questions prevents a successful demonstration, a study assumption or a regulatory approval from being mistaken for a finished GPS replacement.

Bottom line: what is different about Pulsar?

Pulsar is Xona’s planned LEO PNT constellation. GPS uses established MEO satellites; Pulsar’s closer, faster-moving satellites are intended to provide stronger signals and faster convergence, while its independent signal and proposed cryptographic authentication target complementary resilience benefits. Xona publishes 2 cm horizontal by 4 cm vertical positioning, timing below 10 nanoseconds and signal power up to -136 dBW, but those are company specifications.

As of October 2026, Pulsar-0 reception has been reported in tests, Xona has authorization for full deployment, and an approximately 300-satellite constellation remains planned. That makes Pulsar a developing complement to GPS—not a service readers should assume is globally available or supported by every existing GNSS receiver.
