If an online exchange is unavailable, start with your electric utility or state energy office: these organizations may run refrigerator or freezer take-back programs with pickup, a bounty, or a bill credit. If no eligible program exists, contact your municipality or public works department about bulky-item collection and transfer-station drop-off. Retailers, appliance-removal services, and local scrap-metal recyclers are additional possibilities. Before scheduling anything, confirm that the provider accepts your exact appliance, whether pickup or drop-off is offered, any appointment or preparation rules, all fees or incentives, and how refrigerant and other hazardous components will be handled.

1. Check utility and state energy-office programs first
Utilities and energy-efficiency organizations sometimes operate refrigerator or freezer recycling programs. A program may collect the unit, pay a one-time bounty, or issue a utility-bill credit. Eligibility can depend on the appliance being plugged in at your residence, its size, age, working condition, or another local rule.
Use ENERGY STAR’s Find a Fridge or Freezer Recycling Program directory as a lead, then open the provider’s own instructions. Ask whether the program is currently accepting requests in your service territory and whether the appointment includes indoor removal or only curbside pickup.
What to have ready
- Your utility name and service address or ZIP code.
- The appliance type, brand, approximate age, dimensions, and whether it still operates.
- Access information, such as stairs, narrow doorways, or a need for indoor removal.
- Questions about the incentive: is it a one-time payment or credit, and when is it issued?
Do not assume that a utility program accepts window air conditioners or dehumidifiers simply because it accepts refrigerators. Name the exact item when you call.

2. Ask your municipality about bulky-waste collection
Your city, county, township, or regional waste authority can explain the local path when no utility program is available. The relevant office may be called solid waste, sanitation, public works, or environmental services. Ask whether it offers scheduled bulky-item pickup, a reservation-based collection, a seasonal event, or a transfer-station drop-off.

Questions for the waste department
- Does the service accept this appliance type and size?
- Must I book an appointment, and how far ahead?
- Is pickup at the curb, driveway, garage, or inside the home?
- Is there a charge, and how is it paid?
- Can I deliver the appliance to a transfer station, and what identification or proof of residency is required?
- For a refrigerator, freezer, air conditioner, or dehumidifier, must a technician recover the refrigerant before collection?
EPA’s appliance-disposal guidance notes that local requirements may make professional refrigerant recovery necessary before pickup. Follow the municipality’s written instructions rather than removing components yourself.
3. Use retailer removal when replacing the appliance
Many retailers offer old-appliance removal when they deliver a replacement, but the service is not universal and may carry a separate fee. Ask before completing the purchase so the delivery order records the removal request.
Confirm these delivery terms
- Whether removal is available for your address and the exact appliance category.
- Whether the crew removes the unit from inside the home or only from an accessible entry point.
- Whether the appliance must be disconnected, emptied, defrosted, or otherwise prepared.
- Whether the removal charge is refundable if the crew cannot safely access the unit.
- Which recycling or disposal contractor receives the appliance afterward.
EPA explains that some retailers provide pickup with delivery, while others may offer drop-off or a voucher. Treat those as retailer-specific terms, not a nationwide entitlement.

4. Find a local appliance or scrap-metal recycler
A local appliance recycler or scrap-metal recycler may provide pickup or accept a delivered unit. This can be practical for washers, dryers, ovens, dishwashers, and other non-refrigerated equipment, but acceptance differs by facility. Refrigerated units need a clear answer about refrigerant recovery.

Screen a recycler before arranging transport
- Describe the appliance precisely, including whether it contains a refrigeration system.
- Ask whether the facility accepts it intact or requires proof that refrigerant has already been recovered.
- Confirm pickup boundaries, vehicle or loading requirements, appointment windows, and fees.
- Ask what happens to refrigerant, oil, mercury-containing parts, contaminated materials, and other hazardous components.
- Request a receipt or written confirmation if you need to document responsible disposal.
ENERGY STAR and EPA both direct consumers toward local recyclers when other programs are unavailable. A recycler’s advertising alone does not establish its handling practices; ask for the process that applies to your item.
Why refrigerated appliances need special handling
Refrigerators, freezers, window air conditioners, and dehumidifiers can contain refrigerants and other materials that should not be released or sent through ordinary scrap handling. EPA says older household appliances historically used ozone-depleting refrigerants and may also contain mercury, contaminated oils, or polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).
In the recycling process described by EPA, a qualified operation recovers refrigerant and oil, removes hazardous components, and then sends the remaining shell for processing. Metals are typically separated for recycling. Glass, plastics, and polyurethane foam are typically landfilled, although the exact process depends on the facility. This is a description of common handling, not a promise about every local contractor, so ask the provider what it does.
EPA estimates that 11–13 million refrigerated household appliances reach end of life each year. ENERGY STAR notes that an average refrigerator at least 10 years old contains more than 120 pounds of recyclable steel. Those figures explain why a legitimate recovery route matters, but they do not determine whether a particular program will accept your appliance.

Prepare the appliance according to the provider’s instructions
Preparation rules belong to the organization collecting the unit. Before moving or transporting it, obtain the provider’s checklist in writing or by email. It may specify how the appliance must be disconnected, where it must be placed, and whether doors, shelves, or accessories should remain attached.
- Do not puncture, cut, or vent a refrigeration system.
- Do not hire a general hauler unless it confirms that it can meet the refrigerant and hazardous-material requirements for your appliance.
- Keep the collection appointment or drop-off receipt until you know the provider accepted the item.
- If a municipality requires prior refrigerant recovery, use a qualified professional and retain the recovery documentation requested by the municipality.
EPA’s guidance does not require a special disposal sticker. That does not override a local program’s own labeling or appointment instructions.
Do not rely on an unconfirmed curbside drop
Leaving an appliance at the curb without a confirmed collection route can result in landfilling or unsafe handling. EPA specifically cautions that curbside appliances may not enter a controlled recycling process. Schedule pickup through a municipality, utility, retailer, or recycler whose acceptance and handling you have verified.

If no service has accepted it, keep the appliance secured while you arrange a legitimate drop-off or pickup rather than assuming an informal scavenger will manage refrigerant correctly.
Match the route to the appliance type
Refrigerators and freezers
Start with the utility or state energy office, then check municipal bulky-waste rules and specialized recyclers. Ask specifically about refrigerant recovery, indoor removal, and incentive eligibility.
Window air conditioners and dehumidifiers
These also contain refrigeration components. Confirm that the program accepts them; a refrigerator-only incentive may exclude them. Ask whether the unit must arrive with refrigerant recovered.
Washers, dryers, dishwashers, and ovens
Municipal bulky-waste programs, retailer removal, and scrap-metal recyclers may be options. Acceptance, preparation, and charges remain local, so provide the model or dimensions when requested.
A five-minute verification checklist
Before you commit to any provider, record the answers to these questions:
- Is my exact appliance accepted?
- Is the service pickup, drop-off, or both?
- Do I need an appointment, proof of residency, or proof of purchase?
- What preparation is required, and who disconnects or moves the appliance?
- What fee, rebate, bounty, or bill credit applies, and is it one-time?
- For refrigerated equipment, who recovers the refrigerant and removes hazardous components?
- What happens if the appliance is inaccessible, damaged, or missing a component?
- Will I receive confirmation or a receipt?
Save the provider’s name, phone number, appointment date, and any instructions. Program participation and terms can change, so recheck details if collection is scheduled weeks later.

ENERGY STAR’s Find a Fridge or Freezer Recycling Program page helps locate refrigerator and freezer programs. EPA’s archived RAD consumer guidance at Consumers describes fallback routes such as utilities, municipal pickup, and local scrap-metal recyclers; because it is an archived snapshot, verify every local detail with the current provider.
The safest practical sequence is therefore to identify the appliance, check for a utility or state program, ask the municipality about bulky collection, and then compare retailer or recycler options using the verification checklist above.
