Project Helix is Microsoft’s codename for its next-generation, first-party Xbox console. Microsoft says it is designed to play both Xbox console games and PC games. It runs on a custom AMD system-on-chip. Microsoft plans to ship alpha hardware to developers beginning in 2027. It has not announced a consumer release date, a price or full specifications.
What Microsoft has announced about Project Helix
Microsoft revealed Helix at GDC 2026 on March 11, 2026, through an Xbox Wire post and a Windows Experience Blog post. Here is what those posts establish.

A console meant to play Xbox and PC games
Jason Ronald, Xbox Vice President of Next Generation, said: “Project Helix is designed to play your Xbox console and PC games, delivering leading performance and ushering in the next generation of console gaming.” This is a stated design goal. Microsoft has not published a compatibility list. It has also not explained how PC games would run on the console.
Custom AMD silicon, DirectX and FSR
Microsoft says Helix is powered by a custom AMD SoC and co-designed for the next generation of DirectX and FSR. It also claims an “order of magnitude leap in ray tracing performance and capability.” That is a promotional claim. The announcement gives no benchmarks and no comparison method, so it can’t be read as a measured result.

Developer alpha hardware in 2027
Ronald said: “I’m excited to share we plan to ship alpha versions of the hardware to developers beginning in 2027.” This is the only timing Microsoft has given. It covers developer kits, not a retail launch, so it shouldn’t be read as a consumer release window.
Keeping older games playable
Microsoft says it is committed to keeping games from four Xbox generations playable “for years to come.” It has not said which games, by what technical method, or which titles Helix will support.

Narrowing the gap between console and PC
Microsoft says it is working to reduce barriers between console and PC games and to make the Xbox experience consistent across screens. Microsoft’s Windows post also said Xbox mode would begin rolling out on Windows 11 in April 2026, starting in select markets. Xbox mode is a Windows feature. It is separate from Helix hardware and its timing.
Microsoft’s figures about the developer ecosystem
Microsoft cited these numbers in its 2026 Xbox Wire post. They are company figures, not independent measurements.
