PlayStation Portal Remote Play runs your game on a PS5 and streams the picture and sound to the Portal handheld. The Portal sends your button presses back over the network. The Portal is not a standalone console, and it does not connect directly to a PS4. Sony says the PS5 must be on broadband, paired with the Portal, and either powered on or in Rest Mode.
What you need
- A PlayStation Portal Remote Player.
- A PS5 connected to the internet.
- The same PlayStation account on both the Portal and the PS5.
- Remote Play switched on for that user in the PS5’s settings.
- Broadband Wi-Fi for the Portal, with a stable connection between the networks involved.
Sony recommends updating the PS5 system software before you set up. You don’t need a PlayStation Plus subscription for Remote Play. Sony’s Portal product FAQ says that using the Portal and PlayStation Remote Play “does not require a PlayStation Plus membership”. A specific game’s online multiplayer may still need one.

How to set up Remote Play
- Connect the PS5 to the internet and sign in with the account you’ll use on the Portal.
- Update the PS5 system software.
- Go to Settings > System > Remote Play and enable Remote Play for your user.
- If the console will sit in Rest Mode, go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network. Without these, the Portal can’t wake the console.
- Finish the Portal’s own setup, sign in with the same account, and start Remote Play.
You aren’t tied to your home Wi-Fi. PlayStation Support describes the Portal as a way to control a PS5 remotely “wherever you have a high-speed internet connection.” Public networks are the exception, because you can’t control their quality.
Network requirements and tips
Sony’s Portal FAQ gives two speed figures. These are Sony’s published requirements, not independent measurements.
#1 Best Overall
- Put Your PS5 in the Palm of Your Hand - PlayStation Portal Remote Player gives you access to the games on your PS5 over your home Wi-Fi*, letting you jump right into gaming without needing to play on a TV.
- Play Your Game Collection - PlayStation Portal Remote Player can play compatible games you have installed on your PS5 console, including your favorite games for PS5 and PS4.**
- Store and Protect – Sturdy outer shell, molded interior and dual zipper pulls provides protection for the PlayStation Portal remote player
- Charging Cable Pass-through – Allows a charging cable to be plugged into the PS Portal while stored inside the case
- Charge and Display – Charge the PlayStation Portal remote player and display it next to your PlayStation5 console
- 5 Mbps: the minimum for using the Portal.
- 15 Mbps: recommended for a better experience.
Sony’s setup recommendations:
- Connect the PS5 to the internet by Ethernet where possible.
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the Portal.
- If the PS5 itself is on Wi-Fi, put the Portal and PS5 on the same network.
- Disable band steering on your router if you can. Sony flags it as a possible problem when connecting the Portal.
Sony recommends a connection setup, not a specific router. Don’t buy new hardware unless your current network can’t meet these points. Raw internet speed isn’t the whole story either. A fast plan on weak or congested Wi-Fi can still stream badly, so stability matters as much as the headline Mbps.
Remote Play versus Cloud Streaming
The Portal supports two different ways to play, and they have different requirements.

The same page also gives general PS5 cloud streaming guidance: 23 Mbps recommended for 1080p, 38 Mbps for 1440p and 52 Mbps for 2160p (4K). That guidance is separate from the Portal-specific figures above.

A note on currency
These details come from Sony’s Portal FAQ, PlayStation Support’s Remote Play guidance and Sony’s Cloud Streaming page, checked in October 2026. The pages are undated. Cloud Streaming regions, game catalogs, account restrictions, speed thresholds and Portal software features can change, so check Sony’s current support pages before a purchase or setup.
