Windows Task Manager is a built-in utility for viewing running apps and processes, checking resource use, and managing certain startup apps. Open it with Ctrl+Shift+Esc. Its layout and available details vary by Windows version.
What does Windows Task Manager do?
Task Manager gives you a live view of activity on your PC. Microsoft describes it as “the Windows in-box solution for monitoring application and process performance and resource usage.” It can help you see which listed items are using resources, inspect performance data, manage running tasks, and change the startup status of apps that appear in its startup list.

Depending on the version and view, it can also show currently signed-in users and services. The exact tabs, metrics, and layout can differ across Windows releases.

An app is the program you recognize, often by its open window. A process is an executing instance of a program, with its own resources and at least one thread. Task Manager lists both visible apps and background processes, so its process list can include activity that has no obvious window. One app may also involve processes that are not apparent from the app’s interface.

What can you see in Task Manager?
- Processes: Apps and background processes, along with resource-use information.
- Performance: Graphs and data about system resources such as CPU, memory, and disk. The available metrics depend on the PC and Windows version.
- Users: Information about logged-on users.
- Details and Services: More specific process and service listings.
- Startup apps: Listed apps that can be enabled or disabled, with startup-impact information in the documented Windows 10 and Windows 11 interface.
Task Manager may open in a condensed view. Select More details to reveal the fuller interface and its tabs.
How do you open Task Manager?
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc on your keyboard.
- If Task Manager opens in a condensed view, select More details to see the expanded interface.
Can Task Manager help explain a slow PC?
It can help you investigate by showing which listed apps or processes are using CPU, memory, disk, or other resources. That information is a useful clue, not proof of the cause: a slowdown can have more than one possible explanation, and Task Manager does not guarantee a performance improvement.

You can use Task Manager to end an unresponsive task, but doing so stops the selected process. Avoid ending unfamiliar Windows processes unless you understand their role; stopping one can disrupt system or app activity.

How is Task Manager different from Windows Settings?
Both Task Manager and Windows Settings can manage the startup apps covered by Microsoft’s documentation. Task Manager presents the list in its own interface and includes startup-impact information. Its broader role is to show live processes and resource use; it is not a general PC-cleaning tool, nor is it the same as a task manager built into an individual app.
