What Is Wi-Fi? How It Works, What It Does, and Why It Matters

Wi-Fi is a way for nearby devices to connect to a local network over radio instead of using a cable at each device. It is based on the IEEE 802.11 family of wireless networking standards. Wi-Fi can link a phone or laptop to a router, but it does not provide internet service by itself: the router also needs an upstream connection for devices to reach the internet.

What is Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi is wireless local area networking (WLAN): devices exchange data over radio with network equipment such as a wireless access point or a Wi-Fi router. The underlying technical standards are in the IEEE 802.11 family, which specifies how wireless devices communicate at the radio physical layer and coordinate access to the shared medium. The IEEE 802.11 Working Group develops these WLAN standards.

IEEE standards and Wi-Fi Alliance certification are related but distinct. IEEE defines the technical specifications; the Wi-Fi Alliance runs certification programs intended to show that products meet agreed interoperability, security, and application-specific requirements. Certification is a useful compatibility and feature signal, not a promise of a particular speed, range, or experience in every home.

How does Wi-Fi work?

  1. A device joins the wireless network. A phone, computer, or other Wi-Fi client uses its radio to connect to a nearby access point, often built into a home router. The device and access point must support compatible Wi-Fi features and security settings.
  2. The radio link carries local traffic. The client and access point transmit and receive data in permitted radio bands. IEEE 802.11 rules govern how the signal is sent and how devices coordinate use of the shared wireless medium.
  3. The access point connects traffic to its destination. The router can pass traffic to other devices on the local network. If it is connected to an upstream internet service, it can also route traffic beyond the home or workplace network.

A wireless access point creates or extends Wi-Fi coverage; a Wi-Fi router commonly combines that wireless function with routing between the local network and an upstream connection. The exact equipment arrangement varies, but Wi-Fi is the local radio link, not the upstream service.

How is Wi-Fi different from the internet?

Wi-Fi connects devices to a local network without requiring a separate network cable for each one. The internet is a global network of networks reached through an internet service connection. A router can provide Wi-Fi even when its internet connection is down, allowing some local communication to continue; conversely, a device can reach the internet over a wired connection without using Wi-Fi.

This distinction matters when diagnosing a slow connection. A strong Wi-Fi link does not guarantee fast internet: the broadband plan or service, router, client device, and radio conditions all affect the result. Likewise, a fast internet plan cannot make an incompatible or weak wireless link perform beyond its practical limits.

What do Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E, and Wi-Fi 7 mean?

Generation labels are simpler names for successive capabilities in the 802.11 family. They help identify broad feature generations, but do not alone specify the speed a user will get.

Wi-Fi label IEEE designation What the label indicates
Wi-Fi 6 802.11ax A generation of WLAN features and capabilities.
Wi-Fi 6E 802.11ax, extended to 6 GHz Wi-Fi 6 operation using the 6 GHz band where supported and permitted.
Wi-Fi 7 802.11be The generation associated with the 802.11be standard.

The IEEE’s listing for IEEE 802.11-2024 describes 802.11be-2024 as including a mode capable of at least 30 Gbit/s maximum throughput at the MAC data service access point, as well as improved worst-case latency and jitter. That is a standards capability statement, not a household speed promise or an advertised-router measurement. A device needs compatible client and access point capabilities, and real performance depends on spectrum permissions, channel conditions, distance, obstructions, network load, and the internet service if traffic leaves the local network.

  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

The Wi-Fi Alliance’s certification label adds another kind of information. A 2024 paper from Hong Kong’s Office of the Communications Authority describes Wi-Fi CERTIFIED as an internationally recognized approval for products meeting industry-agreed interoperability, security, and application-specific protocol requirements. The paper states Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 7 was introduced on January 8, 2024. This certification does not establish how fast a particular installation will be. The paper’s spectrum and licensing details concern Hong Kong and should not be applied to other jurisdictions.

Why is Wi-Fi important?

Wi-Fi lets multiple devices use a local network without a cable run to every phone, laptop, television, or other client. At home, that makes it practical to move devices around while remaining connected. In workplaces, it supports portable computers and shared wireless access. Public access points make network connectivity available in venues where users do not have a direct wired connection.

Wi-Fi’s importance is also practical: it is the connection layer many everyday devices use to reach local resources or an internet service. But its convenience depends on suitable equipment, coverage, security configuration, and available upstream connectivity. A wireless network is not inherently available everywhere, and its quality can vary from one part of a building to another.

Why does actual Wi-Fi speed vary?

A Wi-Fi generation describes what the standard can support under appropriate conditions; it does not determine a user’s measured speed on its own. The IEEE’s historical overview records a maximum wireless data transmission rate of 2 Mbit/s for the original 1997 IEEE 802.11 standard. That is a historical figure, not a current Wi-Fi benchmark.

TP-Link AC1200 Gigabit Dual Band WiFi Router (Archer A6) | MU-MIMO Wireless Internet Router, 4 x Antennas, OneMesh and AP Mode, Long Range Coverage
  • Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
  • Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Client and access point support: both ends need compatible radios and features to use a newer generation or band.
  • Band and local spectrum rules: available frequencies and permitted power vary by country. A 6 GHz-capable device cannot use that band where it is unavailable or not supported by the network.
  • Distance and obstacles: walls, floors, and distance can weaken the radio link between a client and access point.
  • Interference and shared use: nearby networks, other radio activity, and simultaneous network traffic can affect channel conditions and available capacity.
  • Equipment and service capacity: router capability, client hardware, network load, and the upstream internet plan all constrain the result. Wi-Fi cannot create capacity that the service does not supply.

For a network decision, consider the devices that will connect, the bands and generations they support, the building layout and coverage needed, the number and type of simultaneous uses, local spectrum availability, security support, and the capacity of the upstream plan. A Wi-Fi router or wireless access point provides the local wireless network; choosing equipment should match those needs rather than relying on a generation number alone.
