The Tool Desk

In Tom’s Guide’s August 21, 2026 article, the reported rewrites included awkward wording and a change from “at least 15,000 years ago” to “centuries ago.” Those examples are reasons to review humanizer output carefully—not proof that every tool always damages writing or that any single detector can establish who wrote a text.
What went wrong with the humanized writing?
Tom’s Guide reported that some outputs sounded less natural than their inputs. The problems included strange synonym choices, choppy rhythm, and a loss of the writer’s voice. A rewrite can preserve a broad idea while making the sentence harder to read or less precise.

The article named Grammarly Superhuman, Rehumanize.io, and Ace.ai in its examples. Its reviewed text does not provide a full controlled benchmark, detector setup, tool version numbers, or a complete side-by-side comparison. The results should therefore be read as reported tests of particular samples, not a ranking or a guarantee of how each product will perform on other writing.
Can an AI humanizer change facts?
Yes. One example in the Tom’s Guide article involved a sentence about dog domestication: a specific timescale, “at least 15,000 years ago,” became “centuries ago.” That is not a stylistic difference; it changes the substance of the claim.
#1 Best Overall
For any rewrite, compare names, dates, quantities, causal claims, and qualifications with the original sources. This matters especially for technical, legal, medical, financial, or safety-related writing, where a polished-sounding sentence can still be materially wrong.
Do AI humanizers actually evade detectors?
They do not guarantee it. Tom’s Guide reported that some rewrites increased the likelihood of a flag, and that Pangram marked one Ace.ai output as AI-written. That finding applies to the reported text and test conditions; it does not establish a universal result for the tool, other detectors, or other samples.
Rank #2
Detector performance varies. NIST’s June 25, 2025 overview of its 2024 GenAI pilot says results differed significantly across systems: some generators could deceive most discriminators, while some discriminators could detect nearly all generators. NIST also reported improvement across testing rounds and concluded, “There is certainly room for improvement for both generator and discriminator systems.” This broad evaluation was not a direct test of the commercial humanizers named in Tom’s Guide.
A 2025 preprint by Elyas Masrour, Bradley Emi, and Max Spero reports a qualitative audit of 19 humanizers and paraphrasing tools. The authors write, “We show that many existing AI detectors fail to detect humanized text,” and present a model intended to be robust to humanization. The authors’ affiliation with Pangram Labs is relevant context when considering those detector findings.
Rank #3
Pangram’s own August 27, 2025 benchmark lists accuracy figures of 100.0% for Grammarly outputs, 100.0% for Quillbot outputs, and 90.3% for Undetectable AI outputs. These are figures from Pangram’s vendor-published benchmark, not independent, universal success rates for detectors or humanizers. The benchmark does not make detector evasion a dependable outcome.

How to improve a draft without losing your voice
- Start with your own thinking. Record or write the points you want to make before asking a tool to help. Tom’s Guide recommends capturing your own thoughts before drafting; an ordinary voice recorder can serve this purpose, though no specific model was tested or endorsed.
- Use AI for support, not disguise. Brainstorming, outlining, or limited editing can help you develop a draft without asking a tool to disguise its origin.
- Review edits against your intent. Read the new version aloud and remove wording that sounds unlike you, disrupts the rhythm, or obscures your meaning.
- Verify claims against source material. Check each important fact against the original source rather than trusting a rewrite to preserve it.
- Follow the rules that apply to the work. If a school, publisher, employer, or other organization requires disclosure or restricts AI assistance, comply with that policy. A detector result is not a substitute for those requirements.
