What Is VRAM and How Much Do You Need for Streaming?

OBS sets no universal VRAM minimum for streaming. Your needs depend on the game, resolution, graphics settings, scenes, and other GPU workloads.

VRAM is the graphics card’s fast memory for data the GPU needs to render images. There is no universal VRAM minimum for streaming with OBS: what you need depends mainly on whether you are gaming on the same PC, your resolution and graphics settings, and how much work your OBS scenes and other apps add.

What VRAM does

Video RAM, or VRAM, is high-speed memory on or associated with a graphics card. The GPU uses it to access graphics data; AMD describes that data as including textures, shaders, and other assets. More VRAM can accommodate more graphics data, but capacity alone does not measure a GPU’s overall performance or guarantee a smooth stream. The GPU’s processing capability matters too.

NVIDIA’s 2023 explanation of VRAM and AMD’s VRAM overview describe its role in graphics workloads.

How much VRAM do you need for streaming?

OBS does not publish a minimum VRAM capacity in its basic system requirements. Its system requirements page identifies operating-system and graphics API compatibility, and cautions that compatible hardware alone does not guarantee streaming or recording will work. So there is no evidence-based, one-size-fits-all figure to give for OBS streaming.

If you stream a camera or video

Your needs depend on the capture resolution, effects, OBS scene, and other GPU workloads. A straightforward scene can ask less of the GPU than one with many sources, filters, animated elements, or concurrent graphics applications. Evaluate the whole setup rather than buying based on VRAM capacity alone.

If you stream games from the same PC

The game often drives the GPU decision. The GPU must handle the game while OBS renders and composites its scenes. Higher resolution, demanding textures, high graphics settings, and ray tracing can increase graphics-memory use. The game’s workload varies, so a specific capacity cannot be treated as a universal streaming minimum.

AMD lists its Radeon RX 7700 XT with 12 GB of video memory for a 1440p gaming target. That is manufacturer gaming guidance, not an OBS recommendation. AMD also reported peak VRAM use of 11.7 GB in a 2023 Far Cry 6 test at native 1440p, maximum settings, and high ray tracing on an RX 6750 XT with 12 GB. That result applies to those test conditions; it is not a general requirement for games or streaming.

Why a hardware encoder does not remove the need for GPU headroom

Hardware encoders such as NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel Quick Sync Video can move video-encoding work from the CPU to a supported specialized hardware component. They do not make OBS GPU-free: OBS still uses GPU resources to render and composite scenes. Encoder availability and supported codecs vary with the hardware, software, and streaming platform.

  • Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
  • 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
  • Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads

OBS’s hardware-encoding guide describes the available encoder families and compatibility considerations. NVIDIA’s NVENC OBS guide, dated January 30, 2025, recommends H.264 NVENC for Twitch and suggests AV1 for YouTube on RTX 40-series GPUs, or HEVC otherwise. Those are NVIDIA’s recommendations from that date; check current platform support and your GPU’s capabilities before choosing a codec.

How to choose a GPU for streaming games

Compare graphics performance and memory capacity together. A card with more VRAM is not automatically the better choice if its rendering performance, encoder support, or fit for your games and budget is poor.

  • A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
  • Game and settings: Check the games you plan to play at your target resolution and detail level, especially texture and ray-tracing settings.
  • GPU performance: Make sure the GPU can render the game and leave capacity for OBS scene rendering and compositing.
  • Stream scene: Account for capture sources, filters, overlays, and other graphics-intensive elements.
  • Other applications: Include GPU use from browsers, recording tools, or other apps running while you stream.
  • Encoder and codec: Confirm your GPU supports an encoder and codec compatible with your software and platform.
  • Headroom: Avoid planning for a setup where the game consumes all available GPU resources; OBS and other active work need room too.

What to do if OBS struggles while you stream

When the GPU is overloaded, OBS can have trouble rendering or compositing scenes. OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide recommends reducing GPU workload as a practical remedy. Try changes one at a time so you can identify which workload is responsible.

  1. Lower the game’s graphics settings. Start with demanding options such as texture quality or ray tracing.
  2. Reduce the game’s frame rate. A lower frame-rate target can leave more GPU capacity available for OBS.
  3. Simplify the OBS scene. Temporarily disable nonessential sources or filters and check whether rendering improves.
  4. Close other GPU-heavy applications. Retest with fewer concurrent workloads.
  5. Review the encoder choice. Check OBS’s encoder options and confirm compatibility for your hardware and target platform; hardware encoding helps with encoding work but does not eliminate scene-rendering load.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep pre-recorded video live on YouTube around the clock rather than stream a live game from your PC, StreamNeo is a different option: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It supports the video as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded videos, not going live from a camera, and streams to YouTube only. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
