Choose between a hosted service and your own scheduled workflow
A hosted service can combine scheduling, browser capture, and storage or delivery. A self-managed workflow separates those jobs: a browser tool creates the image, a scheduler starts the script on the first day of the month, and your workflow saves or sends the result.

Define the capture before you schedule it
Choose what part of the page to save
- Viewport: captures the page as it appears in the browser window without scrolling.
- Full page: captures the scrollable page content in one image. This can create a very tall file.
- Element: captures a selected page element, useful for a chart, price panel, or other area that matters more than the whole page.

Fix the time and timezone
“First day” is not enough to define an unambiguous run. Choose an hour and timezone, then confirm the scheduler or service interprets both as intended. If a schedule is configured in one timezone but the site’s reporting or business day uses another, the capture can occur on a different local calendar date than expected.

Keep comparisons fair
Visual output can vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Playwright advises running in the same environment used to generate the baseline. Keep the browser environment, viewport, device scale, and capture options stable where possible; otherwise, browser or layout changes may look like website changes. See Playwright visual comparisons.
Schedule your own screenshot with Playwright
Playwright takes the screenshot; a separate scheduler runs the script on day 1. The example below uses Node.js and saves a full-page PNG with the capture date in its filename. Install Playwright and its browser first:

The script waits for network activity to settle, but some sites keep network requests open indefinitely; if that happens, use a different documented wait condition, such as waiting for a known selector or a short delay after navigation.
Connect the script to a scheduler
Configure your chosen scheduler to start the script on the first calendar day of each month at the chosen hour and timezone. Before enabling recurring runs, confirm that the scheduled environment has Node.js, the installed browser, access to the target URL, and write permissions for the destination. Decide how the scheduler will retain or upload the dated files and how failures will be surfaced.

Troubleshoot missed or unusable captures
- The job did not run on the first day: inspect the scheduler’s run history and timezone setting. Check whether day-of-month schedules use the timezone you selected and whether the platform had a scheduled-run or deployment failure.
- The page is blank or incomplete: check the target URL, network access, and page-load errors. A page may render content after the browser’s initial load event; wait for a relevant selector or a site-specific readiness condition.
- The script times out at network idle: some pages continually poll or stream requests. Replace the network-idle wait with a selector or bounded delay appropriate to the page, and avoid waiting indefinitely.
- The screenshot differs from last month: check whether the page itself changed, then compare browser version, operating system, viewport, scale, fonts, and headless settings. Changing capture conditions undermines visual comparisons.
- The file is missing or overwritten: check output permissions and use a date-based filename or a destination that preserves earlier runs. Confirm that the scheduler’s working directory is the one you expect.
- The full-page file is unwieldy: capture a specific element or the viewport instead, or choose a more useful output format and dimensions.
Cost, upkeep, and reliability considerations
A hosted service reduces the amount of scheduling and browser infrastructure you operate, but its schedule options, retention, delivery destinations, and plan limits are provider-specific and can change. Verify those details before depending on it. A self-managed workflow gives you control over the script and destination, while leaving you responsible for browser dependencies, scheduler configuration, and failure handling.

No universal timezone convention or reliability comparison is established for all schedulers and services, so use the provider’s own current documentation for operational details.
