Wi-Fi provides the wireless connection; voice and call-control services run over the IP network. In an enterprise, this can let a wireless phone place and receive calls while moving between access points, provided the WLAN and the call system support reliable voice.
How VoWLAN works
A VoWLAN call combines voice over IP (VoIP) with Wi-Fi access. The endpoint—such as a wireless IP phone—connects to a Wi-Fi access point and sends call signaling and voice media as IP packets. Those packets travel across the wireless LAN and the rest of the IP network to the relevant call-processing services and the other party.

The specific signaling protocol, voice codec, handset, access points, and call-processing platform vary by deployment. Cisco’s technical description gives SIP or SCCP for signaling and G.711 or G.729 for codecs as examples; these are examples from its documentation, not requirements for every VoWLAN system.

VoWLAN, VoIP, and Wi-Fi calling are not quite the same
| Term | What it describes |
|---|---|
| VoIP | Voice carried over an IP network, whether the endpoint reaches that network by wired Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or another access method. |
| VoWLAN | Voice carried over IP through a wireless LAN. In enterprise settings, it often means wireless IP telephony on a managed WLAN. |
| Wi-Fi calling / VoWiFi | Often a mobile phone using Wi-Fi to connect to its cellular carrier’s voice service. The term is sometimes used loosely, so it helps to specify whether you mean enterprise WLAN telephony or a carrier’s smartphone service. |
In the carrier Wi-Fi calling architecture described in an Aruba white paper, a smartphone connects over Wi-Fi and uses an IPsec path to reach a carrier gateway and core network. That is one historical architecture, not a universal description of current carrier implementations. Cisco’s consumer-facing explanation likewise describes a mobile device using a wireless network instead of cellular when the option is available.

What a VoWLAN deployment needs
A typical enterprise arrangement has a voice-capable wireless endpoint, Wi-Fi access points, an IP network, and call-processing services. A user’s phone associates with an access point, exchanges voice traffic over the network, and may roam to another access point as the user moves. The exact equipment and call path depend on the platform and service model.
- Compatible endpoint and calling platform: The handset or client must work with the call-processing system and the WLAN’s security configuration. Legacy Cisco handset documentation illustrates the category but does not establish current product availability or compatibility.
- Usable radio coverage: Calls need adequate coverage where people actually use their devices, including transitions between access-point coverage areas.
- Appropriate traffic handling: Voice packets need suitable priority across the wireless and wired parts of the path. Wireless prioritization and wired quality-of-service settings may both matter.
Why ordinary Wi-Fi coverage may not be enough
A network that works well for browsing or email is not automatically suitable for mobile voice. Voice calls are sensitive to interruptions and inconsistent packet delivery. Weak or uneven radio-frequency (RF) coverage, interference, difficult cell edges, and roaming behavior can affect a call. Traffic handling elsewhere on the network can contribute too; Cisco’s troubleshooting guide identifies quality-of-service and DSCP configuration among possible causes.

Reported VoWLAN problems include choppy or missing audio, one-way audio, clipping, echo, and interruptions during roaming. These symptoms do not point to a single guaranteed cause. Cisco’s troubleshooting guidance emphasizes RF planning and site surveys before and after deployment; the relevant checks depend on the network and the symptom.

How VoWLAN differs from a carrier’s Wi-Fi calling path
With enterprise VoWLAN, an organization typically manages the WLAN and uses its chosen IP-telephony platform. With carrier Wi-Fi calling, the phone uses Wi-Fi as its access path to a cellular provider’s service. The paths, supported devices, and handoff behavior can therefore differ. Do not assume a carrier Wi-Fi calling service behaves like an enterprise wireless phone system, or that every VoWLAN deployment uses a carrier gateway.

For carrier Wi-Fi calling in particular, the connection can involve the phone-to-access-point radio link, the local network and internet path, and the carrier’s network. Aruba’s historical white paper discusses issues such as voice prioritization, coverage gaps, clients that remain attached to a distant access point, and reauthentication delay. Those concepts can help explain potential weak points, but the paper’s device and carrier assumptions should not be treated as current universal rules.

| Comparison area | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Service model | Is the system enterprise-managed IP telephony, a carrier’s smartphone Wi-Fi calling service, or another arrangement? |
| Endpoint and platform support | Which handsets or client devices, call-processing services, WLAN features, and security settings are supported together? |
| Mobility and RF design | Does coverage support the intended use areas and movement between access points, including challenging edges and interference conditions? |
| Traffic treatment and call path | How are voice packets prioritized over Wi-Fi and wired links, and does the path include an internet or carrier segment outside the organization’s control? |
Check compatibility against current documentation for the specific endpoint, WLAN, and calling platform. Cisco’s older wireless IP phone guide is useful as an example of enterprise components, but its model-specific requirements and third-party access-point caveats are tied to that legacy handset documentation.
