Video on demand (VOD) streaming lets you choose a video and start watching when you want, rather than wait for a provider’s scheduled time. VOD describes when content is available—not whether you pay by subscription, by title, or through advertising.
How VOD differs from live or scheduled streaming
With VOD, the viewer chooses the program and its start time. A linear channel follows a schedule; a live stream is watched as it is broadcast. Both can arrive over the internet, but internet delivery alone does not make something on demand. A service may offer scheduled channels or live broadcasts alongside its VOD library.

In U.S. regulation, 47 CFR § 76.1902 uses a narrower definition of VOD involving a separate fee, a viewer-selected start time, and programming generally uninterrupted by advertisements. That regulatory definition is not a universal description of every modern streaming service. The Federal Communications Commission’s 2014 order distinguishes scheduled linear programming from non-linear programming available when the viewer chooses.
What do SVOD, TVOD, AVOD, and PVOD mean?
These labels describe how access to on-demand video is paid for or supported. Ask whether you pay for a catalog over time, pay for an individual title or viewing period, see advertising, or encounter a combination.

The FCC describes subscription, transactional, and ad-supported models in its 2014 order. Amazon Ads also uses the labels SVOD, TVOD, AVOD, and PVOD in its video-on-demand explainer. A provider may mix these approaches: for example, a subscription catalog can sit alongside separately priced titles or an ad-supported tier.
Is VOD the same as OTT?
No. VOD is about when you can start watching: whenever you choose. OTT describes internet delivery outside a traditional managed television distribution arrangement. The terms answer different questions, so a service can be both OTT and VOD. Internet streaming can also be live or scheduled rather than on demand.

What do you need to watch VOD?
You need a supported service, an internet-connected compatible device, and access to the particular title or catalog. That device could be a phone, computer, smart TV, or streaming media player connected to a television. A separate streaming box or stick is optional; it is one way to access compatible apps on a TV, not a requirement of VOD itself. Check the service’s current device compatibility before choosing hardware.

A streaming brand may have different plans, titles, advertising, and availability in different countries, and those details can change. Check the local offer before subscribing or renting. Netflix’s plan information page, for example, asks visitors to select a country, so a single price or plan description should not be assumed to apply worldwide.

For historical context only, the FCC’s December 2024 report says Netflix launched an ad-supported VOD tier in November 2022 and that it had 40 million global subscribers as of May 2024. That is a dated figure, not a current subscriber count or a statement about plans available today.
