It can refer to a recorded video clip sent as a message, or to a live video session started from within a chat. The phrase does not identify one universal feature or guarantee how a particular app works.
What does video instant messaging mean?
Instant messaging is communication in which a user sends a message to one or more recipients. That message can contain a recorded video clip, or a messaging service can connect the conversation to live video. The two behaviors are related, but they are not the same.

The IETF’s RFC 3994 gives “recording a video clip” as one example of composing an instant message. In contrast, Meta’s September 2016 announcement described Messenger’s “Instant Video” as real-time video shared while an open text conversation remained on screen. These examples show why it is clearer to describe what the feature does than to rely on its name.
Recorded video message vs. live video in a chat
| Feature | Recorded video message | Live video in messaging |
|---|---|---|
| Timing | The sender records a clip, then sends it. The recipient can watch after delivery. | Participants share video during an active session. |
| How video relates to the message | The clip is the message content. | The video is a live session connected to a messaging conversation. |
| When the recipient responds | The recipient can reply later. | Participants can react while the session is active. |
| What varies by service | Clip length, storage, and playback. | Audio, group participation, recording, and network requirements. |
How live video can work inside messaging
A messaging app may let people start live video from a text conversation without replacing that conversation with a separate calling interface. Meta’s 2016 Messenger announcement is one historical product example: it described real-time video visible alongside the open chat and said audio was off by default in that feature at the time. That detail applies to that product then, not to video messaging generally.

- Secure Cloud Storage: Protect your recordings with AES-128 encrypted cloud storage
- Pre-Capture Recording: Cloud subscribers benefit from pre-capture functionality, ensuring the camera starts recording right at the moment motion begins - never miss a thing
- Reliable 2.4GHz Wi-Fi Connection: Optimized for 2.4GHz networks to deliver stable, uninterrupted performance. (Not compatible with 5GHz Wi-Fi.)
- Exceptional Night Vision: Equipped with four powerful infrared LEDs and an advanced image sensor, providing sharp, detailed footage even in total darkness
Messaging-initiated live video also appears in industry specifications. The GSMA’s February 25, 2026 release notes describe support for Messaging Initiated Video Calls and RCS Video Chat as a WebRTC-based enabler. A standards capability does not mean that every phone, carrier, region, or app offers it.
What the phrase does not tell you
“Video instant messaging” alone does not establish whether a service includes audio, supports one-to-one or group sessions, records calls, encrypts content, or works across particular devices. These are implementation and service details. For example, the IETF’s RFC 7742 discusses video requirements for WebRTC applications, while Microsoft’s protocol documentation covers session negotiation involving instant messaging and audio/video. Neither establishes that all messaging services behave alike.

XMPP is one technology associated with instant messaging, presence, and voice or video calling, but it is an example—not a requirement for video instant messaging. See the XMPP technology overview.
What equipment do you need?
You need a device with a suitable camera to send video, but many phones and computers already have one built in. A separate webcam is optional for computer users whose device lacks an adequate camera; it is not part of the definition. The requirements for a particular live-video feature depend on the service and device.

How to tell which kind a service means
- If you record first and send a clip for someone to watch later, it is a recorded video message.
- If participants see one another’s video during an active session linked to the chat, it is live video in messaging.
- Check the service’s feature description for details such as audio, group support, recording, compatibility, and availability in your region.
