What Is Video Frame Rate? FPS Settings for Live Streaming

FPS measures how many video frames are sent each second. Choose 30 or 60 based on motion, device support, encoder capacity, upload headroom and platform guidance.

Video frame rate is the number of frames shown or sent each second, measured in frames per second (FPS). For live streaming, 30 FPS is a sensible starting point for relatively still scenes; 60 FPS can make fast movement look smoother, but only choose it if your camera, encoder, internet connection and streaming platform can all sustain it.

What is video frame rate, and what does FPS mean?

FPS means frames per second: how many individual images make up each second of video. At 30 FPS, the stream sends 30 frames each second; at 60 FPS, it sends 60. Twitch Help describes frame rate as how often animation frames are sent to Twitch.

Frame rate is different from resolution. Resolution describes the image’s pixel dimensions, such as 1920 × 1080. Raising FPS does not increase the number of pixels in each frame; it increases how frequently frames are sent. Resolution and FPS are separate settings, though both affect the amount of data your stream must carry.

Should you stream at 30 or 60 FPS?

Setting May suit Check before using it
30 FPS Talking-head streams, presentations and other relatively low-motion scenes. It can help conserve encoding and network capacity. Your platform’s bitrate guidance, stable upload capacity and camera output mode.
60 FPS Gameplay, sports and other motion-heavy content where smoother movement may matter. Camera or capture-device support, encoder load, upload headroom, platform limits and the bitrate guidance for your codec.

This is a practical rule of thumb, not a universal platform prescription. A well-supported 30 FPS stream is preferable to a 60 FPS setting that causes dropped frames, unstable delivery or encoding overload. Choose based on the motion in your content and what the entire capture-to-platform chain can sustain.

How FPS affects bitrate, upload and encoding

More frames per second mean more frames to capture and encode. The bitrate needed depends on more than FPS: resolution and codec also matter. YouTube Help’s live encoder guidance, current when accessed in 2026, lists these 1080p recommendations:

Codec 1080p at 30 FPS 1080p at 60 FPS
H.264 Minimum 5 Mbps; recommended 14 Mbps Minimum 6 Mbps; recommended 17 Mbps
AV1 or H.265 Minimum 4 Mbps; recommended 10 Mbps Minimum 4 Mbps; recommended 12 Mbps

These are YouTube’s codec-specific platform recommendations, not universal minimums or guarantees of stream quality. Use the row that matches your resolution, frame rate and ingestion codec. YouTube also lists CBR encoding and a recommended two-second keyframe interval.

  • QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
  • The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort

Your upload connection needs room above the configured stream bitrate for a stable feed. Twitch Help’s public FAQ excerpt advises roughly 30% more upload capacity than the stream bitrate, illustrating the point with a 6 Mbps stream and an 8 Mbps upload connection. Treat that as Twitch guidance from an excerpt accessed in 2026, not a guarantee that any connection will remain stable. Measure your actual upload performance and leave headroom for normal fluctuations and other network use.

Check the whole capture-to-platform chain

Camera or capture device

The device must support the resolution and FPS combination you select. A streaming guide notes that most webcams support 30 FPS and some support 60 FPS; check your exact model’s supported modes rather than assuming that it can deliver 60 FPS at every resolution. Capture cards and other sources likewise need to provide the chosen mode.

  • Rich color: 99% sRGB color coverage delivers vivid, detailed imagery with strong accuracy.
  • Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.

Encoder and computer

The encoder must process the incoming video at the chosen rate without falling behind. Higher FPS can increase encoding work. If your encoder reports overload, skipped frames or unstable output, try a lower FPS or a less demanding resolution and test again. The exact control labels depend on your encoder software.

Network and platform

Confirm the platform supports the selected frame rate and that your upload connection can reliably carry the configured bitrate. YouTube Live currently lists frame rates up to 60 FPS. Twitch’s public guidance excerpts mention 25 or 30 FPS in one context and describe Full HD as typically 1080p at 60 FPS in another; those snippets do not establish a single setting for every Twitch streamer or content type. Check Twitch’s current guidance for your intended setup.

Set and test FPS for a YouTube Live stream

  1. Choose a reliable starting quality. YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default. If you select settings manually, choose only a mode your camera or capture device supports.
  2. Match the bitrate guidance to the stream. Use YouTube’s current live encoder table for the resolution, FPS and codec you intend to send. For 1080p, the 30- and 60-FPS recommendations differ by codec, as shown above.
  3. Configure the encoder for YouTube’s stated format guidance. YouTube lists CBR encoding and recommends a two-second keyframe interval. Ensure your encoder’s output settings match the stream mode you plan to test.
  4. Check upload capacity. Run an upload speed test and make sure your connection has headroom beyond the configured stream bitrate. A speed-test result is a snapshot, so do not treat the headline number as proof that the connection will stay stable.
  5. Run a representative test before going live. Include audio and movement similar to the actual stream. YouTube Help specifically advises testing with audio and motion like those expected in the live broadcast.
  6. Monitor stream health and adjust if needed. If the stream is unstable, reduce the demand—such as lowering FPS, resolution or bitrate—then test again. Do not keep a setting merely because the camera or encoder offers it.

YouTube says manual resolution and FPS selection is available with a custom stream key; automatic detection is its default recommendation. Follow the current YouTube Studio and encoder instructions for your setup, since exact interface labels can change.

Common FPS problems and what to check

  • The selected FPS is unavailable: The camera or capture device may not support that FPS at the selected resolution. Check its supported mode list and choose a combination it can output.
  • Motion looks uneven or frames are dropped: Check whether the encoder is overloaded or the upload connection is fluctuating. Test with representative motion, confirm upload headroom, and lower FPS or resolution if needed.
  • The stream disconnects or reports poor health: Compare the configured bitrate with reliable upload capacity, then test again with less demanding settings. Network performance can vary over time; one speed test cannot guarantee a stable stream.
  • The image is clear but motion is not smoother: FPS affects motion frequency, not pixel dimensions. Confirm the source actually outputs the selected FPS; increasing resolution alone does not raise frame rate.
  • You are unsure which platform setting applies: Platform guidance can vary by resolution, codec and content. Use the current recommendations for the specific platform and verify through a test stream rather than treating one FPS figure as universal.

When StreamNeo fits—and when it does not

StreamNeo is for keeping uploaded videos live on YouTube around the clock, not for broadcasting a camera feed. If your aim is to loop prerecorded video as a continuing YouTube stream, you upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once and start the stream. StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. See StreamNeo for details.
