Best Streaming Settings for Fortnite Chapter 2: A Practical OBS Setup

There is no universal Fortnite Chapter 2 streaming preset. Stabilize gameplay, choose an OBS output your PC and connection can sustain, and test the full scene before broadcasting.

There is no single best streaming preset for Fortnite Chapter 2. Start with stable gameplay, then choose an OBS output resolution, frame rate and bitrate your PC, upload connection and streaming platform can sustain. Test the complete setup before going live. The official guidance available covers current Fortnite and OBS use; it does not establish a verified preset for the original Chapter 2 build.

Fortnite settings: stabilize the game first

Fortnite’s graphics options affect the game your PC renders. They are separate from OBS settings, which determine the video sent to viewers. A high in-game frame rate does not mean your stream must use the same frame rate.

Use a low-load baseline if performance is unstable

Epic’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking that your PC meets the game requirements, setting Quality Presets to Low and setting 3D Resolution to 100% when addressing graphics problems. Increase quality gradually only if the game remains stable. These are troubleshooting steps, not a universal streaming profile. Compare your hardware with Epic’s current PC requirements; meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee smooth simultaneous gameplay and streaming. Close unnecessary background applications if resources are tight.

Consider Performance Mode on a struggling PC

Epic describes Performance Mode as a way to reduce memory use and ease CPU/GPU load at the cost of visual quality. It is intended to improve frame rate on supported systems. Epic also notes that high-resolution textures can be deselected in the launcher’s installation options. Its article includes historical 720p examples in which one listed laptop went from 24 to 61 FPS and another from 18 to 45 FPS when comparing low scalability with Performance Mode. Those are results from the article’s example systems, not expected results for your hardware or a guarantee for the current game.

Epic’s developer documentation says, “There are currently no publishing requirements to hit a particular frame rate, however 30-60 FPS is ideal depending on platform.” This concerns Fortnite performance and is not a required OBS broadcast frame rate.

Choose an OBS output profile your setup can sustain

In OBS, open Settings > Video. Base (Canvas) Resolution describes the workspace, usually matching your monitor or game source. Output (Scaled) Resolution is the resolution viewers receive. Common FPS Values sets the stream’s output frame rate. Pick output settings based on your encoder, system load, upload and platform requirements—not just the game’s displayed FPS.

Starting profile OBS Output (Scaled) Resolution Common FPS Value When to try it
Lower bandwidth/load 1280×720 30 Try this if higher output settings cause dropped frames or strain your PC.
More motion detail 1280×720 60 Try this when you want smoother motion and both the encoder and upload can sustain it.
Higher detail, moderate frame rate 1920×1080 30 Try this when image detail matters more than 60-fps motion and resources permit.
Higher detail and motion 1920×1080 60 Use only after testing: OBS warns that 60-fps streaming can be much more taxing than 30-fps streaming.

These are options to test, not a ranking. OBS says system demand varies with encoder choice, resolution, FPS and scene complexity. A lower resolution or frame rate may reduce load, but the right tradeoff depends on your PC, audience and connection.

Set encoder, bitrate and audio deliberately

Open Settings > Output and configure the streaming encoder and bitrate supported by your setup and service. OBS’s overview gives 6000 kbps as an example maximum for Twitch; that is not a universal recommendation, and platform limits can change. Check the current requirements for the service you use before choosing a bitrate. OBS suggests around 160 kbps for audio, with lower settings possible when upload capacity is limited.

Your bitrate must fit both the service’s current limit and your sustained upload capacity. Do not assume a particular bitrate will work simply because it appears in a preset. OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard can provide a starting point, but its recommendation is not proof of stability.

Match the stream to your upload connection

Epic’s beginner streaming guide gives these illustrative upload recommendations: 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 FPS; 4.5 Mbps for either 720p at 60 FPS or 1080p at 30 FPS; and 6 Mbps for 1080p at 60 FPS. Higher resolutions are likely to need more upload bandwidth. Treat these as general guide figures, not a substitute for your service’s current requirements or a sustained upload test.

  • Test your upload while the household is using the network normally, not only under ideal conditions.
  • Use a wired Ethernet connection if practical; Epic recommends it for a strong, consistent connection. It cannot improve a weak ISP connection or solve an overloaded encoder.
  • Leave enough headroom for network variation rather than setting the stream bitrate equal to the best result from a brief speed test.

Configure and test before you go live

  1. Check Fortnite performance: run the game with the scene and settings you intend to use. If it stutters, reduce graphics load before increasing stream quality.
  2. Open OBS Settings > Video: set Base (Canvas) Resolution for your workspace, then choose Output (Scaled) Resolution and Common FPS Value for the stream.
  3. Open OBS Settings > Output: select an encoder and bitrate compatible with your hardware, upload and platform’s current limits. Configure audio bitrate as appropriate.
  4. Set up your streaming service: connect OBS using that service’s current account and stream-key instructions. Treat the stream key as a password; do not show or share it.
  5. Run a test with your actual scene: include gameplay, overlays, alerts and audio sources you plan to use. Check the result for dropped frames, stutter, audio sync and legibility.
  6. Change one setting at a time: if the test fails, lower output resolution or FPS, reduce bitrate if the connection is unstable, or reduce game/scene load if the encoder or PC is struggling. Test again before broadcasting.

OBS recommends testing scenes and performance before a first live stream. A PC that meets Fortnite’s minimum requirements may still struggle when it must render the game and encode a stream at the same time.

Troubleshoot the symptom you see

Symptom Likely area to check What to try
Fortnite itself stutters Game or system load Use Epic’s low-settings troubleshooting baseline, close unnecessary background apps, and consider Performance Mode. Raise visual settings only while gameplay remains stable.
OBS reports dropped frames or the stream buffers Network capacity or stability Check that bitrate fits the service limit and sustained upload; try a wired connection and reduce stream demand, then test again.
OBS output is choppy while gameplay is smooth Encoding load Reduce output FPS or resolution, simplify demanding scenes, or use an encoder your hardware can handle. Test changes rather than assuming a compatible minimum spec is enough.
Stream image is soft or text is hard to read Output resolution, scaling or bitrate Check Output (Scaled) Resolution and whether bitrate is adequate within the service’s limits. Increase quality only if upload and encoding remain stable.
Audio is unclear or constrained by low upload capacity Audio configuration and total bitrate Review OBS audio bitrate; OBS suggests about 160 kbps, while lower settings may be possible when upload capacity is limited.
