Ultra HD Blu-ray is a physical-disc format for watching high-definition video and audio at home. It supports video resolutions up to 3840 × 2160 pixels, along with HDR, wider color capabilities and immersive audio. It is not another name for a 4K television or for streamed 4K video: watching a disc requires both an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc and a compatible player.
What does Ultra HD Blu-ray mean?
Ultra HD Blu-ray is the Blu-ray Disc Association’s (BDA’s) optical-disc format for Ultra High Definition video and audio. The BDA announced the Ultra HD format in 2014; its specification defines what compatible discs and players can support. The name is also commonly shortened in marketing to “4K UHD.” (BDA FAQ; BDA About Us)

“4K” refers to the format’s supported pixel dimensions: up to 3840 × 2160. That is four times the pixel count of Full HD at 1920 × 1080. “Up to” is important: the format’s maximum does not mean every film was captured, mastered or authored at native 4K. (BDA FAQ; BDA, What does Ultra HD mean?)

How does it differ from standard Blu-ray?
Ultra HD Blu-ray adds capabilities beyond the resolution associated with standard Blu-ray. The BDA describes HDR, wider color and support for progressive video at 24, 25, 50 and 60 frames per second. The format also supports larger disc capacities and immersive audio. These are format capabilities, not a guarantee that every disc uses every feature.

| Feature | Ultra HD Blu-ray | Full HD comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum stated resolution | 3840 × 2160 pixels, according to the BDA | 1920 × 1080 pixels, according to the BDA |
| HDR and color | HDR and wider-color capabilities; the BDA says the format covers over 75% of the visible color spectrum | Not stated in the cited BDA comparison |
| Progressive frame rates | 24, 25, 50 and 60 frames per second, according to the BDA | Not stated in the cited BDA comparison |
| Disc capacity | 66 GB on dual-layer discs or 100 GB on triple-layer discs, according to the BDA | Not stated in the cited BDA comparison |
| Audio | Up to 7.1 channels of uncompressed audio, plus object-based formats including Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, according to the BDA | Not stated in the cited BDA comparison |
The BDA also lists maximum video rates of 108 Mbps for 66 GB discs and 128 Mbps for 100 GB discs. These figures describe format limits, not the bitrate of every title. Its color-spectrum figure is the association’s claim about the format; it does not mean every television can display that full range. (BDA, Ultra HD Benefits)
What do you need to play an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc?
- An Ultra HD Blu-ray-compatible player. A regular Blu-ray player is not sufficient unless it specifically supports the Ultra HD Blu-ray format.
- An Ultra HD Blu-ray disc. The disc is physical media, distinct from a 4K stream.
- A display suited to the output you want. A compatible player can also play current standard Blu-ray discs, according to the BDA, but the output depends on the connected television and the player’s capabilities. (BDA, Ultra HD Benefits)
If the player is connected to an HDTV rather than a UHD television, the BDA says the player can output standard HD and describes down-conversion and HDR-to-SDR conversion to suit the connected television’s capabilities. That lets the system adapt output; it does not turn an HDTV into a 4K or HDR display. (BDA, Ultra HD Benefits)

What the format definition does—and does not—tell you
The BDA’s specifications define capabilities for discs and compatible players. They do not establish that every UHD release has a native 4K master, that every player handles output identically, or that UHD Blu-ray will look better than streaming in every viewing setup. Those outcomes depend on the title, playback equipment, display and viewing conditions; a format maximum alone cannot settle them.
