TV content recognition, usually called automatic content recognition (ACR), identifies audio or video playing on a television by matching features in the signal—or an identifier embedded in it—to known content. It can be used for purposes such as content recovery, measurement, or contextual advertising; the term alone does not tell you what a particular TV collects or does with a match.
How does TV content recognition work?
An ACR system identifies a match between the media playing and a reference or identifier. The two commonly described methods are fingerprinting and watermarking. A system may use one method or combine them.

Fingerprinting analyzes the signal that is already there
Fingerprinting extracts distinguishing characteristics from audio or video and turns them into a compact signature. The system compares that signature with a reference database to find a match. The fingerprint does not add information to the original media file, and some systems can recognize similar or altered content. EUIPO’s technical guide to fingerprinting explains these mechanisms and uses.

Watermarking adds a code to the media that can identify it when a compatible system detects the code. Unlike a fingerprint, the identifier is embedded in the content. IAB UK’s ACR glossary describes both approaches.

What can ACR be used for?
Recognition produces an identity or match associated with known content. What happens next depends on the system and its purpose. For example, ACR may support contextual advertising, content measurement, personalization, or rights-related identification; that does not mean every ACR system performs all of these tasks. IAB UK describes contextual advertising as one possible use, while EUIPO discusses identifying content, monitoring where it appears, and monetization.
Content recovery in a broadcast standard
ACR can also help a receiver recover content that was not delivered directly in the broadcast signal. The ATSC A/336 content-recovery standard describes a receiver identifying content using ATSC 3.0 audio/video watermarking or fingerprinting, then recovering it over broadband. One example in the standard is a receiver connected through HDMI that receives only uncompressed audio and video. This is a defined broadcast-system use, not a description of every TV’s ACR. See ATSC’s 3.0 standards listing, which identifies A/336:2026-04 as dated 14 April 2026.

Can a smart TV recognize what is playing over HDMI?
It can, depending on the device, software, and implementation. ACR is not limited by definition to content opened in a TV’s own apps: ATSC describes content recovery when a receiver has an HDMI input, and a 2024 independent study reported ACR activity on tested Samsung and LG TVs when used as external displays. Those findings apply to the researchers’ tested platforms and conditions, not to every make, model, software version, or region. Read the study, “Watching TV with the Second-Party: A First Look at Automatic Content Recognition Tracking in Smart TVs”, for its scope and methods.

What does ACR mean for privacy?
ACR means content recognition; the word by itself does not specify which signals are sampled, how often recognition happens, whether matching is done on the TV or elsewhere, what information is retained, who receives it, or the purpose of the feature. Those details vary by implementation. For a specific TV, consult the manufacturer’s privacy notice and settings for your model and region.

Samsung’s stated US feature and controls
Samsung says its ACR feature is optional in the United States and runs when enabled through the Viewing Information Services choice. Its support page says viewing history, a personalized service identifier, and IP address may be associated with the feature. Samsung also says it does not record or watch displayed content and that users can change ACR settings on the TV. These are Samsung’s statements about its feature, not a general description of other manufacturers’ practices. See Samsung’s ACR support page.
What an independent TV audit found
Anselmi and colleagues’ 2024 audit examined Samsung and LG smart TV platforms in the UK and US. The researchers reported that ACR operated when tested sets were used as external displays, that opting out stopped ACR-server traffic in their tests, and that behavior differed between the two countries. This is evidence about those devices, regions, and test conditions—not a guarantee that opting out has the same effect on every TV or that current versions behave identically. The study is available through the ACM publication page.
