What Is Tracker Store and Why Is It Using So Much CPU?

Tracker Store maintains GNOME’s file metadata index. High CPU may be a temporary scan or a persistent indexing fault—here’s how to check and respond safely.

tracker-store is GNOME Tracker’s metadata database service. Its companion filesystem miner, tracker-miner-fs or tracker-miner-fs-3, scans files and keeps that database updated. High CPU use often means Tracker is indexing a large amount of data; if it persists without progress, a database problem or software fault is also possible.

What Tracker Store does

GNOME Tracker is the desktop’s search and metadata-indexing system. The Store component maintains a database of information about files and folders, while the filesystem miner discovers items and feeds their names, metadata, and supported content into that database. GNOME applications can use the index to find files and search their contents.

The process name depends on the installed Tracker generation. Older systems may show tracker-store and tracker-miner-fs; newer Tracker 3 systems commonly use tracker3 tools and tracker-miner-fs-3. GNOME 3.38 moved most core components to Tracker 3, though some applications continued to use Tracker 2. Check your distribution and installed version before following command-line instructions.

Why Tracker can use a lot of CPU

It is indexing or re-indexing files

After installing GNOME, adding a large directory, restoring many files, or changing Tracker versions, the miner may have a substantial backlog. It examines file names and metadata, processes supported content, and updates the index. That work can temporarily drive CPU and disk activity. GNOME’s Tracker 3.3 testing notice warns that reindexing can use very high CPU or memory.

The database may be corrupted or repeatedly failing

GNOME Tracker’s FAQ identifies a corrupted SQLite database as one possible cause of tracker-store staying busy. Repeated SQLite errors, repeated failures, or no apparent progress after an extended idle period make a persistent fault more plausible than a normal first scan. The FAQ describes the broad possibilities as indexing a huge amount of content or a problem in the code: GNOME Tracker FAQ.

The indexed locations may be too broad or constantly changing

Source-code trees, virtual-machine images, mail stores, synchronized folders, and build artifacts that change frequently can create a large or recurring workload. In a 2022 development retrospective, Carlos Garnacho reported 30–40 MB peak memory and 5 MB idle memory for tracker-miner-fs-3; those are memory observations, not a universal CPU benchmark or a guarantee for every system.

Check whether indexing is still in progress

Start with Tracker’s status commands rather than killing processes or deleting database files:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open a terminal and run tracker status.
  2. Where supported, run tracker daemon status for more detail.
  3. Look for remaining work, repeated errors, or a status that does not change over time. Command availability and output vary by Tracker version and distribution.

If the miner reports remaining work after a large file change or system upgrade, allow it to finish and check again. If errors recur or there is no progress after the machine has been idle for a while, consider narrowing the index scope before resetting it.

Reduce what Tracker indexes

Exclude locations in GNOME Settings

Open GNOME Settings → Search, then review the search locations and disable places that do not need indexed search. Reducing the scope can limit future indexing work, but it also reduces search coverage: full-text search in Documents, Music, Photos, Videos, and indexed Files locations depends on indexing.

Ignore a particular directory

For a specific directory, create a file named .trackerignore there, following the format documented in the Tracker FAQ. This is useful when you want to keep indexing ordinary locations but exclude a large or frequently changing folder.

Reset the filesystem index if it appears stuck or corrupted

A reset is a recovery step for a suspected index problem, not a routine way to lower CPU use during a normal scan. Tracker 3 manuals document tracker3 reset --filesystem for removing filesystem index data so the miner can recreate its cache. The reset affects index and configuration data, not your actual files, but it is irreversible for that index and rebuilding can again take time and use CPU and disk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm that your system uses Tracker 3 and that the reset command is available.
  2. Run tracker3 reset --filesystem in a terminal.
  3. Let the filesystem miner rebuild the index; expect another period of CPU and disk activity.

Ubuntu and Debian manuals also document tracker3 reset --file FILE and tracker3 reset --rss, but those target different index data. For older Tracker 2 installations, guidance may use tracker reset --hard. Do not mix commands across versions; consult the manual for your distribution’s installed package. The Ubuntu and Debian Tracker manuals describe reset operations as irreversible index/configuration changes, not deletion of user files.

What to do if CPU use returns

If high usage returns after a clean rebuild and you have narrowed the indexed locations, gather your distribution name, GNOME and Tracker versions, status output, and relevant error messages. Repeated failures under those conditions may indicate a software issue worth reporting to the distribution or seeking Linux desktop support for; avoid repeatedly resetting the index without addressing the underlying cause.
