The SONiC Foundation’s October 13, 2025 announcement highlighted new deployments and evaluations spanning AI infrastructure, telecom and payments, alongside Nexthop AI’s move to Premier membership. These examples show growing use of SONiC, the open-source network operating system, but they do not establish an independent market-leadership ranking or guarantee that SONiC will fit every network.
What is SONiC networking?
SONiC stands for Software for Open Networking in the Cloud. It is a Linux-based network operating system that originated at Microsoft for Azure data centers and is now hosted by the Linux Foundation. The Foundation’s 2022 description said SONiC ran on more than 100 switches from multiple vendors and ASICs, and included networking functions such as BGP and RDMA. That is a dated description, not a current compatibility guarantee.

SONiC’s open-source, multi-vendor approach can give operators more choice over software, hardware and contributions than a single-vendor stack. It does not mean every SONiC build works on every switch, that migration is effortless, or that support and operational practices are interchangeable. Compatibility depends on the specific hardware platform, ASIC, software release and required features.
What did the Foundation announce in October 2025?
At OCP Global Summit, the Linux Foundation reported Nexthop AI’s advancement to Premier membership, four deployment or evaluation examples, and expanded SONiC participation at the summit. The Foundation described SONiC as a “leading” open-source network operating system. That wording represents the Foundation’s positioning: the announcement does not provide a neutral market-share measure or independent study proving global leadership.

Deployment examples named in the announcement
| Organization or operator | What the Foundation reported | How to read the evidence |
|---|---|---|
| SAKURA internet | An 800-GPU SONiC-powered cloud infrastructure; the announcement said it earned 49th place in the global TOP500 ranking. | The deployment and ranking claim are attributed to the Foundation’s October 2025 announcement. |
| Mitsui Knowledge Industry | SONiC used in AI infrastructure behind the Tokyo-1 supercomputer, with reported cost savings and lifecycle control. | The announcement does not provide a quantified saving in the information summarized here. |
| Rakuten | Multi-vendor SONiC evaluated at scale for telecom, with reported savings compared with proprietary solutions. | This is a reported evaluation and savings claim, not an independent comparison. |
| Unnamed national retail payments operator in India | Infrastructure supporting hundreds of millions of daily transactions, with a reported 40% reduction in total cost of ownership (TCO). | The operator is not identified; the transaction and TCO figures are Foundation-reported case-study claims. |
The Foundation’s user-story index also lists examples including Broadcom, Dell IT, Orange, Alibaba Cloud and a global e-commerce operator. A list of published stories indicates documented use or evaluation; it is not a census of deployments or a measure of market share.
Is SONiC used in production?
Published examples include production infrastructure as well as evaluation work. For instance, the October 2025 announcement describes SAKURA internet’s GPU cloud infrastructure and an Indian payments operator’s transaction-supporting infrastructure. Rakuten’s example is described as an evaluation at scale, so it should not be recast as a production rollout.
A separate Linux Foundation-licensed 2025 case study describes an unnamed global e-commerce company that selected community SONiC after assessing proprietary network operating systems and commercial SONiC distributions. It reports deployment across switches from six vendors and a move from 100GbE to 400GbE. The study says the company achieved 30% lower TCO, attributing the result to a combination of measures: eliminating license fees, standardizing components, using commodity optics and cables, and reducing support and refresh costs. This is one anonymized operator’s reported outcome, not a forecast for other networks.

Who is adopting SONiC for AI infrastructure?
The October 2025 announcement identifies SAKURA internet’s 800-GPU cloud infrastructure and Mitsui Knowledge Industry’s AI infrastructure behind Tokyo-1. The Foundation’s July 28, 2026 announcement adds a later ecosystem milestone: Supranett joined as a Premier member, while Exaware, TeraHop and Infrawaves joined as General members. That announcement quoted Linux Foundation general manager Arpit Joshipura saying, “As AI infrastructure becomes increasingly critical, open networking is essential to delivering the scale, performance and flexibility organizations need.” The statement expresses the Foundation’s view of open networking’s role; it is not a measured comparison of network platforms.
How large is the SONiC ecosystem?
Published ecosystem figures need to be read with their dates. They describe the community at the time of each announcement, not today’s totals.
| Announcement date | Reported figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| April 29, 2024 | 4,250 contributors across more than 520 organizations; contributor growth of 20% year over year. | Linux Foundation announcement; not a current contributor count. |
| August 25, 2025 | 36 member organizations, after seven additions. | Linux Foundation announcement; a dated total that predates later additions. |
| July 28, 2026 | Supranett joined as a Premier member; Exaware, TeraHop and Infrawaves joined as General members. | The announcement records these additions but does not give a refreshed membership total. |
Membership growth and contributor counts are signs of ecosystem activity, not direct evidence of deployment scale, product maturity in a particular environment, or global market leadership.

Which switches support SONiC?
There is no single answer that applies to every SONiC release and network design. The Foundation’s 2022 overview described support across more than 100 switches and multiple ASICs, but a deployment decision requires checking current compatibility information for the exact release, switch model, ASIC and feature set. A listed platform is not by itself proof that it supports every function, scale target or operational requirement a network needs.

The published e-commerce case study describes evaluation across spine, leaf and edge roles, SKU selection based on compatibility and performance benchmarking, lab interoperation work, and qualification before production. Those steps illustrate why hardware choice is real but bounded: openness expands the options to assess; it does not remove validation work.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can SONiC reduce data-center network costs?
It can be part of a lower-cost design, but the cited savings are operator-specific reports rather than a general guarantee. The Indian payments operator’s reported 40% TCO reduction and the e-commerce company’s reported 30% reduction come from different cases and should not be compared as if they were produced under the same methodology. The e-commerce study links its result to several changes made together, not software licensing alone.

For an actual comparison, calculate total cost across the deployment lifecycle rather than comparing license prices in isolation. Include hardware and optics, support, engineering and automation work, qualification, refresh cycles, and the operational impact of running and troubleshooting the chosen stack. The benefits depend on the organization’s existing contracts, skills, supply choices and lifecycle plan.
What should operators evaluate before choosing SONiC?
- Hardware and ASIC compatibility: Verify the exact platform, ASIC, SONiC release and features required, using current compatibility resources.
- Network role and scale: Define whether the switches will serve spine, leaf, edge, AI, telecom or other roles, then test the intended topology and scale.
- Performance and interoperability: Benchmark the selected SKUs and validate interactions with adjacent equipment and services in a lab before production.
- Support and lifecycle: Decide whether to use community SONiC or a commercial distribution, and establish ownership for support, upgrades, security and hardware refreshes.
- Operations: Check how the network will be automated, monitored and troubleshot, and whether the team has the skills and processes to run it.
- Lifecycle economics: Compare the full cost of each viable option using the same assumptions and planning horizon; do not treat an individual case-study saving as a forecast.
The evidence available through July 28, 2026 shows a growing, multi-sector SONiC ecosystem and published examples ranging from AI infrastructure to payments. It supports describing SONiC as an increasingly adopted open networking option; it does not establish a global market-leader ranking or make deployment fit universal.
