Tong Tong is a virtual toddler created by the Beijing Institute for General Artificial Intelligence (BIGAI). Demonstrated at a Beijing AI exhibition in February 2024, it is designed to operate in a simulated environment and, according to its creators, generate new tasks for itself rather than only respond to instructions. Public evidence describes a research demonstration—not a verified human-level artificial general intelligence (AGI) system.
What Tong Tong is
Tong Tong’s name translates roughly as “Little Girl.” Visitors encountered the avatar at the Frontiers of General Artificial Intelligence Technology Exhibition in Beijing, as reported by Futurism on February 3, 2024. BIGAI presents Tong Tong as a simulated child: software with a child-like virtual body and behavior, rather than a physical robot or a consumer assistant.
The project is intended to explore how an artificial agent can perceive a setting, understand instructions, learn from interaction and act within a virtual world. The available public descriptions do not establish that Tong Tong has consciousness, emotions in the human sense or an independent existence outside its software environment.
What is supposed to make it different?
Self-directed task generation
The notable claim is that Tong Tong can create tasks for herself in a virtual environment. Conventional demonstrations usually show an AI completing goals supplied by a person. BIGAI’s description instead points toward an agent that can decide what to do next, pursue internally generated goals and adapt its behavior.

That distinction is a design objective reported by Futurism, not an independently measured performance result. No public benchmark in the available sources shows how often Tong Tong invents useful tasks, how difficult those tasks are or whether it can complete them reliably.
Who created Tong Tong?
Tong Tong was developed at BIGAI, an institute founded by computer scientist Zhu Songchun. BIGAI’s official About page describes the organization as a nonprofit research-and-development institute affiliated with Peking University, Tsinghua University and other Chinese academic institutions.
The institute says it pursues a unified theory of AI and follows a “small data, big tasks” approach influenced by cognitive science and developmental psychology. Its listed research areas include computer vision, machine learning, robotics, natural language, cognition and reasoning, multi-agent systems, simulated autonomous intelligence, computer graphics and human-computer interaction.

The software platform behind the work
BIGAI describes TongOS as a platform for perception-module scheduling, joint interpretation, task planning, multimodal human-machine interaction and adaptive communication. It also lists TongPL, although the public material supplied for this topic does not provide enough technical detail to determine which TongPL components run Tong Tong or how the system is implemented.
What does the Tong Test measure?
Tong Tong is associated with BIGAI’s proposed “Tong Test,” described as an inverse and more complex alternative to the classic Turing Test. Futurism reported nearly 150 questions covering five quantifiable dimensions, plus social and group values.
| Reported dimension | What the category represents |
|---|---|
| Vision | Visual understanding and interpretation. |
| Language | Comprehension and communication. |
| Cognition | Reasoning and understanding of situations. |
| Emotion | Recognition or handling of emotional context. |
| Learning | Ability to acquire and use new information. |
| Social and group values | Social behavior and value-oriented judgment included in the broader evaluation. |
The category list indicates a broad evaluation agenda, but the supplied public accounts do not publish the full question set, scoring rules, pass threshold or reproducible results. “Nearly 150” is the number reported for the proposed test, not a score achieved by Tong Tong.

Is Tong Tong an AGI system?
There is no independent evidence in the available sources that Tong Tong has reached human-level AGI. Neither the 2024 news report nor BIGAI’s institutional description supplies peer-reviewed results, an outside replication, a standardized capability benchmark or evidence of robust performance across open-ended real-world tasks.
The most accurate description is a research avatar linked to an AGI research program. Its intended capabilities—self-directed goals, multimodal interaction, common-sense learning and value-sensitive behavior—are relevant to AGI research, but stated goals should not be confused with validated general intelligence.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat BIGAI says the system should learn
Zhu Songchun said an AGI agent must learn and execute tasks in complex settings while being guided by values and an understanding of causality. Another statement attributed to him says that progress requires entities able to comprehend the real world and possess a broad range of skills.

A BIGAI video statement translated in the Futurism report says Tong Tong has a mind, seeks to understand human-taught common sense, distinguishes right from wrong, expresses attitudes and can shape the future. Those are project statements describing the intended character of the avatar; they are not independent findings about its abilities.
How to evaluate claims about simulated children
- Ask what is autonomous: Is the system selecting goals, or merely following a hidden script or user prompt?
- Check the environment: Results in a constrained simulation may not transfer to physical, social or unpredictable settings.
- Look for repeatable measurements: A credible claim needs published tasks, scoring methods, baselines and results that other researchers can reproduce.
- Separate behavioral language from mental claims: Saying an avatar “feels,” “wants” or “knows” may describe its programmed behavior without proving subjective experience.
- Distinguish a demonstrator from a product: Tong Tong is presented as a research project, not as a commercially available child-like assistant.
Why Tong Tong matters
The project illustrates a shift from judging AI only by its answers toward building agents that operate over time: perceiving a world, planning actions, learning from consequences and making decisions that reflect social norms. Whether Tong Tong can do those things generally and reliably remains unresolved, but those are the capabilities BIGAI is trying to study through its simulated-autonomy work and the Tong Test.
