Google paused Gemini’s ability to generate images of people in February 2024 after users reported inaccurate and offensive results, including historically wrong depictions of Nazi-era German soldiers as people of color. The move was a suspension of one feature—not a shutdown of Gemini, Imagen, or all Google image generation.

What Google actually shut down

On February 23, 2024, Google said it had paused image generation of people in the Gemini app while it worked on accuracy. The company did not announce the closure of Gemini as a whole, and it did not say that every image-generation capability across Google had been disabled.

Question What the February 2024 announcement established
Was Gemini shut down? No. The pause covered a specific Gemini app function: generating images of people.
Was all image generation disabled? No such broader shutdown was announced.
Which image model powered the feature? Google said the Gemini app feature was built on Imagen 2.
Is the feature available now? The February announcement did not establish its present-day availability or performance.

Google also stressed that Gemini can make mistakes, particularly with current events, developing news and politically sensitive subjects. That was a warning issued at the time, not evidence of how later versions perform.

Why Nazi-era images became the focus

Contemporary reports described users sharing images in which Nazi-era German soldiers were depicted as people of color, along with other historically inaccurate outputs. Those examples explain the phrase “racially diverse Nazis” used in headlines and searches such as “Why did Google pause Gemini image generation?”

Google Pixel 11 Pro XL- Unlocked Smartphone, Gemini - 512 GB - Obsidian
  • Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro XL; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
  • Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
  • Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
  • Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
  • Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]

There is an important evidence distinction: Google’s own statement acknowledged that some generated images were “inaccurate or even offensive,” but it did not authenticate or catalogue every viral image circulating online. The Nazi examples should therefore be described as reported examples, while the broader admission comes directly from Google.

Google’s explanation for the failure

Google attributed the problem to two issues in the feature’s tuning. First, it said an effort to make Gemini show a range of people failed to recognize situations in which introducing that range was plainly inappropriate—for example, when a prompt refers to a specific historical group.

  • The Actua display with 3,000-nit peak brightness shows up clear as day, even in direct sunlight[5]
  • Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]

Second, Google said the model had become more cautious than intended. It sometimes interpreted harmless prompts as sensitive and refused them altogether. This is Google’s explanation of what went wrong, not an independently verified technical root-cause analysis.

“It’s clear that this feature missed the mark. Some of the images generated are inaccurate or even offensive.”

— Prabhakar Raghavan, Google Senior Vice President, February 23, 2024

Raghavan’s post also described the two tuning problems and said the company would improve the feature significantly before restoring it.

What Google promised to do next

  1. Keep people-image generation paused: Google said it had turned the capability off while it worked on improvements.
  2. Correct the behavior: The stated goal was to handle historical and other sensitive contexts more accurately, while reducing unjustified refusals.
  3. Test extensively: Google said restoration would follow extensive testing.

These were commitments made in February 2024. The announcement alone does not show whether the promised changes were completed, how a later model performed, or whether the same feature returned under a different implementation.

Why the incident mattered beyond one bad image

Historical accuracy is not the same as demographic variety

A system designed to broaden representation can produce false history when it treats every prompt as an invitation to diversify the people shown. A historically specific request requires the model to preserve the relevant time, place and group rather than apply a generic balancing rule.

Overcorrection creates a second usability problem

Google’s account describes a trade-off: safeguards intended to avoid offensive material also caused refusals for benign prompts. A useful image tool must handle genuinely harmful requests without treating ordinary educational, artistic or historical questions as automatically disallowed.

Viral examples do not measure total impact

The available announcement and contemporaneous reporting do not provide a verified count of affected prompts, a failure rate or a measured user impact. No numerical scale should be inferred from the images that went viral.

What remains uncertain

  • Whether Gemini can currently generate images of people.
  • Which model or safety-tuning system would power a restored feature.
  • Whether later releases fixed the historical-context and over-refusal problems.
  • Whether independent evaluations have validated Google’s proposed changes.

Those questions require later product documentation or testing; they cannot be answered from Google’s February 2024 pause announcement.

The Bottom Line

Google paused only Gemini’s image generation of people after inaccurate and offensive outputs, including reported Nazi-era examples—not Gemini itself. Google blamed context-insensitive diversity tuning and excessive caution, and said it would restore the feature only after significant improvement and extensive testing. The announcement does not establish the feature’s current status.
