In November 2016, CTO Mike Schroepfer described the Caffe2Go mobile deep-learning platform recognizing a smile and placing a “yay” filter over a selfie. That was expression detection tied to an automated effect—not evidence that Facebook’s system understood a person’s feelings or responded with human-like social judgment.
What Facebook’s AI could recognize
The clearest published example dates to 2016. Facebook said Caffe2Go could recognize facial expressions and perform related actions. A smile could activate a “yay” overlay while a person recorded a selfie.

In practical terms, the system identified a visual pattern in the camera image, classified it as an expression such as a smile, and used that classification as a trigger for an effect. The description does not establish that the software knew whether someone was genuinely happy, amused, nervous or pretending to smile.

How the smile filter worked
- Camera capture: The phone supplied a live stream of image pixels while the user recorded.
- Expression analysis: Caffe2Go’s neural-network model analyzed those pixels and detected a facial expression.
- Trigger: When the model recognized a smile, the associated action was activated.
- Rendering: Facebook applied the “yay” visual filter to the selfie video.
Facebook presented this as real-time processing on mobile hardware. Caffe2Go was described as running on both iOS and Android, with the model optimized for image and video work on phones instead of requiring every frame to be sent to a remote data center. That description applies to the platform’s mobile processing design; it does not prove that every operation in every Facebook effect was always performed locally.

What “naturally” does—and does not—mean here
The reaction could feel natural to a user because the effect appeared immediately after a visible expression. Technically, however, the published account supports a narrower claim: facial-expression recognition followed by a programmed visual response.
- Supported: detecting a smile or other facial expression and triggering a related effect.
- Not established: reliably identifying a person’s underlying emotion, intention or mental state.
- Not established: conversational understanding, empathy or human-like social judgment.
Facebook’s reported engineering result
Facebook said in 2016 that it reduced the size of the model used for image and video processing by 100 times so deep neural networks could run efficiently on iOS and Android devices. This is Facebook’s own reported engineering figure, not an independently verified benchmark.

Is the smile-triggered AI still available?
Its current availability is not confirmed by the evidence available here. Meta’s June 2026 announcement describes newer Facebook AI tools for answering questions and for creating or editing content, including camera-roll sharing suggestions, collage templates, transition effects and AI photo presets. It does not say that the specific 2016 smile-triggered “yay” filter remains in Facebook.
Meta says camera-roll sharing suggestions are opt-in and can be turned off. Those newer tools show continued investment in AI-assisted creation, but they should not be presented as the same feature as Caffe2Go’s expression-triggered filter.

How the newer tools differ
| Feature described | Period | Primary function |
|---|---|---|
| Caffe2Go smile example | 2016 | Recognize a facial expression and trigger a visual effect during capture |
| Meta Facebook AI tools | June 2026 announcement | Answer questions and assist with photo or video creation and editing |
These are different functions and dates, so the available sources do not support a performance ranking between them.

Meta has also discussed research on vocal expression in conversational AI, including laughter, yawning, cries, pauses and spontaneous speech. That work concerns audio and nonverbal vocal cues. It is separate from the Caffe2Go facial-expression feature and does not confirm anything about the old smile filter’s current status.
