The article says Cook was intent on pursuing that category and competing with Meta, but its strongest claim about his priorities comes from an unnamed insider speaking to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman—not from Cook himself or an Apple announcement.
What is Tim Cook’s “strange obsession”?
It is a reported focus on lightweight AR glasses designed for everyday, all-day wear. Futurism described Apple as continuing work on Vision Pro while also looking toward glasses that would be lighter and less expensive. The word “obsession” is the article’s characterization of the reporting, not a publicly stated description from Cook.

The anonymous insider quoted through Gurman said, “Tim cares about nothing else,” and added, “It’s the only thing he’s really spending his time on from a product development standpoint.” Those remarks are second-hand characterizations of Cook’s priorities. They should not be treated as a direct quote from Cook or as independently confirmed Apple strategy.

Is Apple making AR glasses?
The available evidence here establishes reported interest, not an official Apple glasses product announcement. Apple’s October 2025 Vision Pro update announcement documented a model with an M5 chip and a Dual Knit Band. It did not confirm consumer AR glasses or provide a release schedule for them.

That distinction matters: Vision Pro is a headset, while the reported ambition is for a lighter glasses form factor. The official Vision Pro update does not, by itself, prove that Apple’s glasses are imminent, what they would include, or when they might ship. Their status, timing, and configuration remain unconfirmed by the cited Apple announcement.
How do Apple’s reported plans compare with Meta glasses?
“Smart glasses” covers products with different capabilities. Some have cameras, microphones, audio, and AI features but no in-lens display. Meta’s later announcements also include display-equipped glasses, so it is inaccurate to treat every Meta pair as the same kind of AR product—or to compare them as though they were all direct equivalents of Apple’s reported glasses.

| Product or report | What the cited source establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Apple glasses (reported interest, April 2025) | Futurism, citing reporting attributed to Bloomberg, described Apple’s interest in lighter, less expensive glasses alongside Vision Pro development. | An official product announcement, final features, release date, or price. |
| Apple Vision Pro update (October 2025) | Apple announced an M5 chip and Dual Knit Band for Vision Pro. | Confirmation of consumer AR glasses or their launch schedule. |
| Meta Ray-Ban Display (announced September 2025) | The Associated Press reported that Meta announced glasses with a small display and a $799 price at that time. | A current price or a basis for describing all Meta glasses as display-equipped. |
| Ray-Ban Meta Blayzer Optics (Gen 2) and Scriber Optics (Gen 2) (announced March 31, 2026) | Meta described these models as designed with prescriptions in mind. | That every Meta glasses model has a display, or that these models match Apple’s reported concept. |
| Meta Glasses with EssilorLuxottica (announced June 23, 2026) | Meta named Amazon among retailers in several countries. | A particular Amazon listing, current inventory or price, or affiliate terms. |
For the original article’s snapshot of the category, Futurism referred to Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses without an in-lens display. The AP’s later report on Meta Ray-Ban Display described a distinct display-equipped announcement. Comparing specific models and dates avoids blurring those products together.

The available announcements do not support a definitive, like-for-like comparison of all Apple and Meta glasses on display capabilities, weight, all-day comfort, price, or prescription fit. One dated price illustrates why timing matters: Futurism cited Vision Pro at $3,499 in April 2025, while AP reported Meta’s announced $799 price for Ray-Ban Display in September 2025. Neither figure should be assumed to be a current price, and the products are different form factors.

Why the distinction matters to buyers
- Check for a display: A camera-and-audio smart-glasses model is not the same thing as a pair with an in-lens display.
- Check the named model: Meta has announced different models and capabilities at different times; a category label alone does not tell you what a particular pair can do.
- Check what is confirmed: Apple’s official announcement cited here concerns Vision Pro. The glasses ambition comes from attributed reporting, not a confirmed Apple product launch.
- Check fit and prescriptions: Meta’s March 2026 announcement specifically identifies Blayzer Optics and Scriber Optics Gen 2 as designed with prescriptions in mind; that claim should not be extended to every model.
- Check dated prices and availability: The cited price figures are announcement-era references, not verified current listings.
What to take away from the headline
The headline points to reported Apple interest in everyday AR glasses and an anonymous source’s emphatic account of Cook’s focus. It does not mean Cook publicly declared an obsession, that Apple has announced glasses, or that a launch is near. Meanwhile, Meta’s expanding eyewear announcements show why comparisons need to identify a specific model, feature set, and announcement date.
