What Is Thin Client Computing? A Clear Definition and How It Works

Thin-client computing moves most processing and applications to a remote server or cloud service, leaving the endpoint to handle access, input, and display.

What is a thin client? It is a device or software setup that relies on remote computers or cloud services for much of its processing and application environment. The endpoint handles input, display, and network communication; a server or cloud service supplies the desktop, applications, or data. Thin clients can still do some work locally—the defining feature is that most computing happens elsewhere.

How thin-client computing works

A hardware thin client starts up and connects over a network to a centralized computing environment. When a user types or moves a mouse, the endpoint sends those actions to the remote system. That system processes them and sends back the screen updates. The endpoint is therefore the access point, while the remote environment does most of the computing.

The remote environment can deliver a complete desktop or just selected applications. A browser-based setup is another form: the user accesses web applications through a local browser, which may still perform some processing on the device. In each case, “thin” describes the endpoint’s role relative to the remote service, not an absence of local computing.

Common forms and where they are used

  • Purpose-built hardware: A compact endpoint with limited local resources and connections for displays and peripherals.
  • Software-defined endpoint: A standard PC or notebook configured to connect to remote desktops or applications.
  • Browser-based access: A browser on an ordinary device connects to web applications or services; some work remains local.
  • Shared terminal services: Users access selected applications running on a shared remote server rather than receiving a separate full desktop.
  • Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI): The operating system, applications, and data environment are hosted centrally and delivered to each user as a virtual desktop. AWS identifies VDI as a leading thin-client use case.

These setups can suit call centers, kiosks with temporary users, remote workers and contractors, or staff who need access to virtualized legacy applications. The right form depends on what the remote service provides and what users need to connect locally.

Thin client vs. a regular PC or rich client

A traditional or “rich” client keeps more computing resources and applications on the user’s device. Microsoft’s smart-client guidance describes rich interfaces, offline use, and access to local hardware and software as capabilities of that approach. A thin-client setup shifts more of the environment to a remote system.

Consideration Thin-client setup Regular PC or richer client
Where most processing happens On a remote server or cloud service On the local device, though it may also use remote services
Local resources Often less local compute and storage are needed More local compute and storage can be available
Offline work Limited when the desktop or applications depend on network access Can support offline use, depending on the software and data
Management Central delivery can simplify updates and endpoint administration More software and configuration may need to be managed on individual devices
Network dependence Relies on network access and the remote service; low latency helps performance Can continue local work without a network for some tasks

These are design tendencies, not guaranteed outcomes. A thin client can reduce the resources needed at the endpoint and keep less business data on it, but total cost and security depend on the whole system: server or cloud capacity, networking, administration, and access controls.

What to assess before choosing a thin client

  • Compute and storage: Determine whether users’ applications can run remotely and what must remain available locally.
  • Offline needs: Identify whether people need to work during network or service outages.
  • Network quality: Check reliability and latency for the actual workload. A slow or unstable connection can undermine the experience.
  • Management and data control: Consider whether centralized updates and reduced local data fit your operational and security requirements, and include the remote environment in that assessment.
  • Displays and peripherals: Confirm support for required monitors, USB devices, and other hardware.
  • Support life: Check the endpoint’s operating-system support and security-update term. A 2020 Bitkom procurement guide described roughly 5–7 years as a typical useful operating life for hardware-defined thin clients; that is dated guidance, not a guarantee for a current model.

A product-specific example and its support caveat

Amazon WorkSpaces Thin Client is a physical device designed to access AWS End User Computing virtual desktops. AWS documentation says it supports two monitors and multiple USB devices, while preventing local data storage and installation of unapproved applications. These capabilities describe that AWS-specific device, not thin clients as a category.

AWS states that support for Amazon WorkSpaces Thin Client will end on March 31, 2027. After that date, AWS says the devices can no longer be used or managed through the console. Its platform dependence and announced support end are important considerations for anyone evaluating this particular model.
